Kraft named new President of the Melville Millionaires (SJHL)

For the first time since 2011, the SJHL's Melville Millionaires have a new President.

Long-time board member Dwayne Kraft was appointed as the team's new President at the club's annual general meeting held this past Thursday at the Horizon Credit Union Center.

Kraft had recently served as the 2nd Vice-President of the Mils this past season.

"I've been on the board for years, and now its just another way for me to contribute to the club, and I just want to make sure to keep the direction right for our fundraising & promotional parts of our hockey club", Kraft said in a phone interview on Monday.

Kraft takes over for Dawn Melnychuk who had held the position for the last 6 years.

The Mils also announced a new Marketing person for the upcoming season as Kraft said that Assistant Coach Mark Chase will take on those duties.

"We are pretty excited to have Mark doing the job, he's an outgoing guy and we think he'll do great work for the hockey club", Kraft said.

Kraft also mentioned that the Mils did make a small profit from the 2016/17 season of just over 23-hundred dollars.

Wayway Wolverines (MJHL) hire Caplan as their new Head Coach/GM

(Wolverines Press Release)

The Waywayseecappo Wolverines are excited to announce the hiring of MJHL alumni, Arnie Caplan as their new General Manager/Head coach.

Arnie, who is originally from Manitoba, had a 10-year career playing goal in the MJHL, WHL, and at the university level with the Acadia University Varsity Axemen, where he obtained his masters degree in Sociology.  After graduation, Arnie played in the U.S. Southern Hockey League for the Daytona Beach Breakers and Lakeland Prowlers.

Arnie has coached at various levels including his most recent 2-year stint with Portage College in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference, where he led the Voyageurs to a 21-point improvement in his first season.

Arnie has developed a strong network of contacts through his experience of recruiting players to the northern Alberta college and managed all aspects of the Voyageurs’ operations.  Prior to his move to Alberta, Arnie spent 2 seasons in Winnipeg, coaching at the AAA midget level and the 2012/2013 season as General Manager/Head Coach of the Lundar Falcons of the Keystone Junior Hockey League.

Arnie has great knowledge of the game and tremendous enthusiasm and passion.  We believe that Arnie’s work ethic, attention to detail and administrative organization capability will be exactly what the Wolverines require as we re-brand and reorganize team structure for future success!

Arnie’s first tasks will be contacting our players and preparing for the MJHL Bantam Draft and scheduling meetings that will be held in conjunction with the MJHL Annual General Meeting.  After that, we anticipate working on securing support staff and preparing an organizational process and structure for the upcoming season.

Arnie will be moving to the area immediately, with his family re-locating upon completion of the school year.

Notre Dame Hounds' Dawe named 2016/17 CJHL Rookie of the Year

The Canadian Junior Hockey League announced Wednesday that Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League forward Adam Dawe of the Notre Dame Hounds has been named its Top Rookie Award recipient for the 2016-17 season.
Dawe, a 17-year-old native of Gander, Nfld., garnered the accolades for the honour, which goes annually to its top first-year Jr. ‘A’ player within the 132-team CJHL, through voting compiled by each of its 10-member Jr. ‘A’ leagues across the country.
Despite still being a midget-aged player, the Notre Dame standout was earlier named SJHL Rookie of the Year, in a campaign where the league boasted a very strong class of first-year players.
Dawe led the SJHL rookie point race wire-to-wire as the Hounds’ forward registered a league-best 64 points among first-year skaters as he scored 19 times and doled out 45 assists.
His offensive numbers also helped him finish tied for ninth overall in SJHL scoring.
Earlier this season, Dawe was also named to the Team West roster and participated in the CJHL Prospects Game held this past January in Cornwall, Ont.
He is expected to attend the University of Maine on scholarship in the fall of 2018 and play for the Black Bears.
The CJHL would also like to recognize the four other finalists for its Top Rookie Award.
BCHL: Cam Donaldson – Powell River Kings
CCHL: Merrick Rippon – Ottawa Jr. A Senators

Toronto Maple Leafs Banner tour coming to Kelvington in October to honour Wendel Clark

(Media Release)

As part of the Toronto Maple Leafs Centennial Season celebrations, during the 2016-17 NHL season, the team created new banners to hang in Air Canada Centre to pay tribute to the players that have had their numbers retired. Beginning in the summer of 2016, and continuing into the first half of the 2017-18 season, the 18 original Air Canada Centre banners will be delivered to the towns that these players called home. On October 21, the banner of Wendel Clark will be delivered to Kelvington, Saskatchewan, with the official arrival taking place at the Kelvington Elevator on Railway Ave.

“One of our goals throughout our Centennial Season, in addition to celebrating the rich history of the Toronto Maple Leafs, was to share the excitement of this special season with fans far and wide and thank them for their support,” said Brendan Shanahan, President and Alternate Governor of the Toronto Maple Leafs. “This banner tour was, and continues to be an important part of Maple Leafs history, permanently putting the original ACC banners on display in the towns of our greatest players.”

“In 1993, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Leafs Alumni began the tradition of honouring former Leafs greats by raising their names and numbers to the rafters of Maple Leaf Gardens, until the team moved to Air Canada Centre, where the tradition continued,” said Peter Ing, President of the Leafs Alumni. “For years, hockey fans in Toronto have been able to enjoy these ceremonies and see the banners when they visit Air Canada Centre. It’s special to know that now, fans in the communities that produced those players will be able to see their banners as well.”

Chairwoman of the upcoming event, Lorelle Holowaty said, “We are excited for this opportunity to honor and celebrate the contributions, awareness and success that Wendel Clark has brought to the community of Kelvington. The event will celebrate the formal retirement of Wendel’s number 17. Our Wendel Clark Day Committee will be hosting a series of events for all ages, that will be both fun and respectful of the historical significance of this event.”

Wendel Clark joined the Maple Leafs in 1985, and set a Leafs rookie record for goal scoring that stood for 31 seasons. After three tours in Toronto, Clark had become the club’s all-time playoff goal scoring leader. Former Maple Leafs President Ken Dryden said "Game in, game out, year in, year out, he was just a kid cruising the ice looking to cause trouble - a wicked wrist shot for a goal, a crushing body check, a fight - opponents' bodies littered on the ice, fans
out of their seats, the place in an uproar, and Wendel, no expression on his face, looking around wondering what the commotion was about.” This past season, Clark was named to The One Hundred presented by Canadian Tire, a list of the 100 Greatest Maple Leafs of the team’s first 100 years, learned that he will be receiving a statue on Legends Row this fall.
Itinerary for the day will include:

• Official Banner Raising Ceremony at 2:30 p.m. @ Kelvington Elevator on Railway Ave (free for all ages)

• Autograph, Meet & Greet at 3 p.m. @ Kelvington Recreational Arena (free for all ages)

• Supper, Program, Live Auction & Dance starting at 5 p.m. @ Kelvington Recreational Centre (19+)

All proceeds will benefit the Kelvington Recreational Arena.

The one day ticket launch date will be held on Friday. Tickets can be picked up at the Kelvington Recreational Arena from 6PM - 8PM or online that day at www.brandingbarn.ca

Wayway's Durdle commits to Northland College

(From @TheLilDurdy)

Wayway Wolverines’ alumni Cody Durdle will suit up next season for Northland College.
Durdle, who played two seasons with the Wolves, was a solid defenceman, who recorded 45 points (13-32) in 84 games. He also played briefly for Portage and Virden.
“Heading into this off-season we had to address the losses incurred to graduation on our blue-line and we kept coming back to Cody,” said Northland Head Coach Seamus Gregory. “He’s big, strong, can jump in the rush and shut down when called upon.
“In our facility we feel he will be a presence and another piece we need to continue to move forward. He is a very dedicated player and fantastic person, his family too was unbelievable to work with from the start of the process. We are excited about this commitment, he will be a very solid member of our college community”.
Northland College is an NCAA Division III institution located in Ashland, Wisconsin.  The LumberJacks and LumberJills sponsor 15 varsity sports and compete in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference and the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association.
