Odgers enjoying 2nd WHL Training Camp with Broncos

Spy Hill native Dakota Odgers is attending his 2nd WHL Training Camp with the Swift Current Broncos. This year he has been joined by his Yorkton Harvest teammate Tanner Lesann who was signed by the Broncos. They got their first taste of action last night in Moose Jaw with their first pre-season game. The Moose Jaw Warriors took the game 3-1, but both Odgers and LeSann who played on the same line together each recorded an assist on the lone Bronco goal

I talked with Odgers about how his 2nd WHL Training Camp is going so far and the play of his teammate.

Millionaires forward Ian McNulty expected to join the UConn Huskies (Div 1) next season

Melville Millionaires forward Ian McNulty is expected to join the University of Connecticut Huskies Men's hockey team starting next year, the 2013/14 season .

The Airdrie, Alberta native who will turn 20 this December, broke out last season scoring 39 goals while registering 47 assists for 86 points in 58 games, after recording 7 goals and 12 assists for 19 points in 46 games in his rookie season in 2010/2011.

Melville Millionaires Preview

GOAL- Alex Wakaluk looked ready for #1 duty even as a rookie last season. The Millionaires added veteran Blake Voth, who took them to Game 7 of the Sherwood Final, but now it’s Wakaluk’s team. Who will back up Wakaluk is very much up in the air heading into camp.

DEFENSE- It’s a question mark heading into 2012-2013. Melville’s top four defensemen were all overagers last season, with Tyson Newell, Lee Christensen, Bob Pond and Brett Kipling all moving on. Landon Hall battled the injury bug all of last season, but hopes to lead a young Mils’ blue line this year. Adam DiBella and Tyler Bird are the only other returnees. John Stechyshyn is retiring from the Junior ‘A’ ranks.

FORWARD- Not a question mark. The Millionaires will score goals. Ian McNulty was second in the league with 86 points last season, and had more goals and points than any other 1992 born player. He’ll be rejoined by linemate Russell Trudeau, along with the likes of Sean Aschim, Lucas Froese, and Michael Sagen. T.J. Reeve and Allen Kilback showed well as 17-year-olds last year, and appear ready for more responsibility.

Benefit Soccer Game for Breast Cancer this Sunday in Yorkton!

The Yorkton United FC Soccer team will be hosting a breast cancer benefit soccer game this Sunday at 2PM at the Sacred Heart Soccer Fields

One of the Coaches Thor Berge talks about the game and how it came to be.

Yorkton Terriers Preview

GOAL- The off-season trade of 20-year-old Warren Shymko to Swan Valley (and now Kindersley) likely paves the way for second year netminder Kale Thomson to shoulder the load this season, with Dawson MacAuley expected to get a long look from the Medicine Hat Tigers. Thomson was 8-5-1 with a 2.69 GAA, .911% and a shutout as a rookie last season.

DEFENSE- Twins Chase & Brady Norrish, and third year defenseman Devon McMullen will headline a smaller, but incredibly mobile Terrier blue line. The lack of size and sandpaper could be made up for in a hurry with the return of Austin Bourhis. After spending his 17-year-old season in Yorkton, Bourhis played the last two seasons in Prince Albert (WHL). The Raiders released Bourhis, but the Moose Jaw Warriors are giving him a shot in camp.

FORWARD- With Riley Paterson and Ryon Sookro graduating, Zak Majkowski will be the clear-cut #1 centre, with sophomore Curtis Oliver getting more responsibility behind him. The team has no shortage of scoring wingers, including local product Jeremy Johnson, who led the team in goals (23) last season. Tyler Giebel (Saskatoon) and Tayler Thompson (Portland) are taking one more crack at the Western League as 19-year-olds, but if back, both could find themselves as top-10 scorers in the SJHL. Four-year vet Nathan Murray and fellow 20-year-old Brenden Poncelet will provide leadership and give teams problems along the boards.

Stoll's Day with Lord Stanley

It was a special day for Los Angeles Kings Forward and Stanley Cup champion Jarret Stoll as it was his turn to have his day with the Stanley Cup and what a day it was.

The day all started at the Yorkton Airport when the cup arrived via airplane from Meadow Lake where Stoll's teammate Dwight King had it yesterday. Then it was time for Stoll to hop in a limo style van and head on down the road to where it all began, the stomping grounds of Neudorf, Saskatchewan and near the hockey rink where Jarret's hockey career began. The morning celebration in Neudorf was full of cheer and excitement as Jarret brought the Stanley Cup onto the sports grounds in Neudorf which brought a huge cheer from the crowd. After that 2 hours was spent by the crowd coming to have a meet and greet with the Stanley Cup champion and also being able to get their picture taken with Stoll and the Cup. Making the trip to help Jarret celebrate the day was his Los Angeles Kings teammate and former roommate Brad Richardson (who's turn with the Cup will be August 25th in Belleville, Ontario.

But that wasn't all as the celebrations made the quick 40 minute drive back to Yorkton for a huge Stanley Cup parade that lasted over an hour and went all the way along Broadway St. to the Gallagher Center where people had another chance to get their picture taken with Stoll.

The night concluded with banquet that included cocktails, supper, speeches and a social featuring the Arkells.

Now the Stanley Cup will head over to Winkler, Manitoba tomorrow where it will be Los Angeles Kings Forward Dustin Penner before heading over to Kenora, Ontario for Mike Richards' turn on Saturday.

Just was a perfect day to celebrate the Stanley Cup accomplishment from one of our area's local hockey heroes, Jarret Stoll.

The Yorkton Yankees fended off a 14-0 Game 3 loss to the Willowbrook Royals, by taking the series clinching Game 4 on the road 7-4 to capture the SESBL League Final Series 3 games to 1. The Yankees end reign that the Yorkton Jr. Cardinals had of 3 straight league titles. The league title win by the Yankees is the first one in team history. The Yankees took the first 2 games of the league final 8-0, and 5-4 respectively before the Royals came back and hammered the Yanks in Game 3.

Miller Express even series in marathon Game 2!

The Moose Jaw Miller Express scored 6 runs in the Top of 15th inning due in part to a clutch bases clearing double by Miller Express first baseman Austin Russell and that was enough as they defeated the Melville Millionaires 10-4 at Pirie Field to even their best of 5 East Semi-Final series at 1 game apiece.
Mils closer Dustin Emmons was tagged with the loss. He came in relief going 4 2/3 innings, allowing 4 hits, 5 runs he walked 3 and struck out 6. Ryan Talley started on the mound for the Moneymen going 5 innings surrendering 4 runs on 6 hits walked 1 and struck out 3.
Offensively, the Mils were led by Third baseman Garrett Kilgore who at the time tied the game at 4, with a grand-slam homerun over the right-field fence, his first of the playoffs and 7th RBI. First baseman Sheldon O'Dell also had two hits for the home team.
Now the series shifts over to Ross Wells Park in Moose Jaw for Games 3 & 4 which will Thursday and Friday night from the friendly city and if necessary Saturday night for Game 5 back at Pirie Field.
