"It would mean everything to win it all at home": Melville Cobras get set to host SHSAA 4A Boys Volleyball Championships this weekend

For the first time in 26 years, Melville will play host to a Provincial High School Boys Volleyball Championship.

The Melville Comprehensive School will be the host site to the SHSAA 4A Boys Championships this weekend with the St. Henry's Senior School in Melville serving as the secondary facility.

Melville Cobras Head Coach Nolan Matthews says this is a pretty big event hosted in the community.

"It's a big honor, this doesn't come around very often like every 15-20 years so definitely are honored to host this event this year,", Matthews said in an interview with GX94.

The Cobras are one of 10 teams taking part in the championships.

Melville is in a pool with Saskatoon Christian, Wadena, Lumsden and Melfort while Pool B consists of Osler, Humboldt, Fort Qu'Appelle, La Loche and Moose Jaw Vanier.

Matthews adds the field of 10 teams is a pretty good one.

"This year is going to be a really competitive provincials, some years before the tournament you kind of know who the favorite is and who is going to win the Gold Medal, but this year not as much. I think a lot of the teams will be evenly matched, so we just gotta go out there and play well."

The Cobras have had some success at previous provincial championships recently winning 4 Bronze medals (2004, 2008, 2014 and 2017) but haven't won a Gold medal since 1990.

Grade 12 left-side hitter Talon Frick who will be playing in his final matches as a Cobra this weekend says to win at home would be pretty special.

"It would be mean everything, just having the crowd and everybody here just be able to see it would be amazing."
