Wolverines; Terriers victorious as they both head into X-Mas Break
The Wayway Wolverines wanted to go into their Christmas break with a bang and they certainly did that as they hammered the OCN Blizzard on Friday night 7-1 to get win number 11 on the season.
The first period was a period dominated by the Blizzard early on, as they had all kinds of chances to open the scoring, but every chance they'd get they were denied by goaltender Mitch Wiebe. The Wolverines would open the scoring at the 16:02 mark of the opening frame as Brock Paddock would squeak one through to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead after 20 mintues.
In the 2nd, it would be all Wolverines as they muster 4 goals in the middle frame. The goal party would start at 4:23 mark, as George Spilchal would bang home his 13th goal of the season to make it a 2-0 Wayway lead. Rylee Zimmer would add their third Wolverine goal shorthanded for his 5th to make it 3-0. Neil Woolfrey and Spilchal again, would add singles in the late stages of the 2nd period to give the Wolverines a 5-0 lead after 2 periods.
It would be more of the same in the 3rd, as Wayway would add a couple more as Rhett Lough (1st as a Wolverine) and Zimmer would add the Wolverine markers. But the shutout bid for Mitch Wiebe would end with just 5:12 remaining as Brendan Barron would rip home a powerplay goal for the Blizzard to break the goose egg, but Wayway held on for the 7-1 victory.
Mitch Wiebe (pictured above) was the busier of the goaltenders as he turned aside 40 shots for the win while Brodie Claeys made 19 saves in the loss.
The Wolverines are now on their Christmas break, there next action will be on Jan. 3rd when they visit the Winnipeg.
---------------------------------------------------
The Yorkton Terriers went into their Christmas break on a winning note as Jordan Ross got the game winner late for the Terriers as they slipped by Notre Dame 5-4.
Cortlan Procter, Brandon Sookro, Kailum Gervais & Corwin Stevely added singles for the Terriers who got a split goalie performance in between the pipes as Matt Kustra stopped 18 of 20 shots while Dawson MacAuley made 11 saves on 13 shots.
Terriers next action will be in the 5th installment of the Highway 10 battle on New Years Day as they visit the Melville Millionaires. GX94 will broadcast the game, with Yorkton Dodge Junior Hockey, pregame show 2:20, pxp at 2:30PM.

Kustra stops 33 but Terriers fall on road in Melfort
The Yorkton Terriers dropped their final road game of 2014 as they fell 4-2 to the league's best team the Melfort Mustangs at Northern Lights Palace in Melfort on Wednesday night.
It wasn't the most ideal start for the Terriers as just 42 seconds into the opening period, the teddy bear toss would be scored as Mustangs captain David Heath would hammer one by Matt Kustra (pictured above) for his 3rd goal of the season make it an early 1-0 game. Then just 6:24 later, the Mustangs would add to their lead as the league's leading scorer would add his 21st goal of the season to give Melfort Mustangs a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.
That lead would stay intact until the late stages of the 2nd period when Kailum Gervais would deflect home his 4th of the year on the powerplay to pull the Terriers within 1, at 2-1 after 2 periods.
The Terriers would come out strong in the 3rd and they would generate a lot of chances to try and get that equalizer which would finally come just over the mid way point of the period when Brandon Sookro would take a nice feed in front from Adam Santoro and direct home his team leading 14th goal of the season to tie things up at 2-2. The Terriers would continue with the pressure that they had all period, but Mustangs' goalie Zack Degraves played his best down the stretch and the Terriers couldn't break through. Then with just 4:40 left Cole Hrysky would take a nice feed across and hammer home his 12th of the season, which was the eventually game winner, while Mayan would add the final dagger an empty netter with just over a minute remaing.
Zack DeGraves turned aside 28 shots for his 7th win of the season while Matt Kustra put together another solid start making 33 saves in the loss.
The Terriers will look to go into the break on a high with a win on Friday night when they host the Notre Dame Hounds.
----------------------------------
In the MJHL,
The Swan Valley Stampeders made a statement in their final home game of the 2014 calendar year as BJ Avery had the natural hat trick to lead the Stamps over Selkirk 4-0.
Gavin Froese had the lone other SV goal while Graham Hunt made 25 saves for the shutout.
The Stamps will play their final game before Xmas on Saturday visiting Neepawa.

Muirhead wins first ever Canadian Open Women's Title
(Photo: Anil Mungal)
After an opening end blank, Eve Muirhead made an outstanding come around with her last in the opening end forcing Rachel Homan into a soft weight hit for her one, but she wrecked on the front allowing Muirhead to steal 2 in the 2nd end and take a 2-0 lead early on.
In the 3rd, it looked like a whole lot of trouble for the Homan rink but Eve Muirhead trying to get around the abundance of rocks in front wrecked, that allowed Homan to play a raise of her own onto Muirheads in the 4 foot and it was successful to cut the lead in half to 2-1.
Just before the 4th end break, Muirhead would add to her lead as she would make her easy hit for one to take a 3-1 lead. Homan would once again be able to cut into the Scottish teams lead in 5th as facing a couple her draw would grab a piece of the button to make it a 3-2 Muirhead advantage.
Muirhead would be forced to take a single point in the 6th end after her blank attempt was unsuccessful and she would regain her 2 point lead at 4-2. In an end controlled by the Muirhead rink, Homan was forced into a hit for her single point and she made no mistake, to cut to within one at 4-3 without hammer heading into the 8th end.
In the 8th end, it would be an open draw for the Scotland native Muirhead, and like she was all week right on mark to push her to the 5-3 victory.

Laycock falls short in 1st Grand Slam of Curling Final; Gushue wins 2nd Slam of Season
(Photo: Anil Mungal).
Local product Steve Laycock and his Saskatoon rink of Kirk Muyres, Colton Flasch and Dallan Muyres came up a little bit in their bid to capture their 1st Grand Slam title as New Foundland's Brad Gushue (pictured) scored 2 in the final end to beat Laycock 6-5 in the Canadian Open Final yesterday from the Gallagher Center in Yorkton.
The teams would exchange deuces in the opening 2 ends as hometown product Steve Laycock would make a nice soft weight double to score his deuce to take an early 2-0 lead after end number 1, while the 2006 Olympic champion Brad Gushue would come back with a deuce of his own in the 2nd, with a open hit to make the score 2-all after a couple ends.
Laycock would need full 8-foot with his last in the 3rd end, and he would make no mistake to regain his lead this time at 3-2. In the 4th, there was plenty of granite in front of the house and Laycock with his last made a nice come around to bite top 4, and all Gushue could do with his final stone was make a soft hit through a tight port to cut the steal of Laycock to only 1, to give the Saskatchewan rink a 4-2 advantage heading into the 4th end break.
After Laycock came up a little bit short with his corner freeze attempt, Gushue, the 2014 Masters grand slam champion, made his draw to four foot for 2, to once again even things up at 4-4.
After a Laycock blank in the 6th, Brad Gushue made a nice come around with his last to force Laycock to a single point and a 5-4 after 7.
In the 8th, in an end that started off not that ideal for Gushue, was bailed out a nice raise with his 1st to lie one. Laycock would counter with his final stone, with a nice freeze. But Gushue who only could see a couple inches of the button with his last would make the clutch draw and score 2 to come back and defeat Laycock 6-5.

Langan gets shootout winner as Stamps shade past Wolverines
The Swan Valley Stampeders got their 14th victory of the season on Wednesday night when they slipped by the Wayway Wolverines 5-4 in the shootout.
The Stamps would get off to a pretty quick start as just 5:11 into the 1st period, Nick Kobelka seeing eye wrister would make it to the back of the net for his 12th goal of the season to give Swan an early 1-0 lead. But before the period could wrap up George Spilchal would walk off the half wall and go top shelf over Lasse Petersen on the power play to tie things up at 1-1 with Stamps leading in the shot department after 1, 20-7.
In the 2nd, the tides would turn and it would be all Wolverines as they would out shoot the Stamps overall in the middle frame 20-9. Offensively in the 2nd, Cody Ellingson would regain the home teams 1 goal lead with his 3rd of the year to make it 2-1 Swan Valley. But once again the Wolverines would get the equalizer as Morgan Greve with a nice wrister would also top shelf for his 1st MJHL goal, and 1st goal as a Wolverines to make it a 2-2 game. Wayway would get their first lead of the night with just 33 seconds remaining when Robert Briem's one timer would slip through Petersen for his team leading 14th goal of the season to give the Wolverines their first lead at 3-2 after 40 minutes.
The Stamps this time would be the club that would be able to get the equalizer on a puck that was misplaced by goalie Mitch Wiebe, reigning MJHL Player of the Week Carter Johnson would capitalize on it to make it 3-3. The two teams would then late, exchange powerplay goal of the sticks of Dylan Gedjos (Wayway) & Braydon MacDonald (Swan) to tie things up at 4-4 headed to overtime which would solve nothing.

In the 2nd, the Stamps would continue on their offensive outburst just 2:45 into the middle frame as Johnson would deflect home his 2nd of the night and 10th of the season to give the Stamps a 4-0 lead. But just a short time later, Neepawa would get on the board as Brayden Atkinson would bang home his 7th of the year on the powerplay to make it a 4-1 game. Jordan Valentino would regain the Stamps 4 goal at 5-1 , with a power play goal of his own his 5th of this MJHL season. The Natives would be able to get a couple more before the 2nd period buzzer would sound off the sticks of Kyle McDonald and Steven Mather to make it a 5-3 SV lead through 2 periods of play.

Terriers drop a 3-1 road decision in Nipawin
After getting back in the win column last Saturday night with a shutout win over the Melville Millionaires, the Yorkton Terriers weren't able to build off that win as they fell 3-1 tonight on the road against the Nipawin Hawks.
It wasn't a good start for the Terriers as the Hawks were able to capitalize on a little bus legs from the Terriers and get some early opportunities but like all game long Dawson MacAuley made some key saves for his club. Then just over 8 minutes into the 1st period the Hawks would get on the board as Chase Thudium would sneak one through for his 13th goal of the season to give the home team a 1-0 lead after 20 Minutes.
In the 2nd, Nipawin would add to their lead early on at the 3:54 mark, Brandsn Arnold would get the eventual game winner as beat Dawson MacAuley with his 7th to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead. But just a short time later, the Terriers were able to get on the board on the power play as Carson Cayer bounced on a rebound and banged him his 2nd to cut the deficit in half for the Terriers at 2-1 through 2 periods.
The hometown Hawks in the 3rd would ice it on a powerplay of their own as Carter Coben would take a nice feed back door and slip home his 13th of the year to make it a 3-1 Hawks final.
Joe O'Brien was solid enough for the Hawks stopping 24 shots for the win, while for the Terriers' Dawson MacAuley kept his team in the game and made 35 saves in the losing cause.
The Terriers will go right back at it on Saturday night when they welcome the Battlefords North Stars at the FAA at 7:30

Mils get a point but lose 2-1 in OT to Kindersley
To keep it The Melville Millionaires put together another solid effort on the ice, but managed to get only a point as they lost 2-1 to the Kindersley Klippers.
After a very good start to the game last night in the Battlefords, it wasn't quite the same tonight here in Kindersley as just 48 seconds into the opening frame Darcy Deroose's shot slipped through goaltender Troy Trombley for his 10th of the season (1st as a Klipper) to provide the only offence of the 1st to give the Klippers a 1-0 lead.
The Mils started off period number 2 with a couple PP chances but as what has become a common theme for the Money man as the PP continued to struggle and weren't able to capitalize. But as the period went on the Mils continued to have their fair share of better chances and they would finally break through as Dalton Menke finished off his 4th of the season to even things up at 1-1 after 40 minutes.
