Terriers drop season opener 6-4 in Weyburn

The Yorkton Terriers comeback fell a little bit short for them in their season opener on Friday losing 6-4 to the Weyburn Red Wings.

The Red Wings would get the first good opportunity of the game as Brandon Volpe would be hauled down and was awarded a penalty shot but he was denied by the glove of Terrier netminder Cam Pateman. But the Wings would get on the board a short time later as Jacob Jeske get one through the five hole of Pateman to give the home team a 1-0 lead. Just 55 seconds later, the Terriers would even things up at 1-1 with a nice goal by 2nd year player Brandon Sookro. The Red Wings wouldn't be done there though as Jacob Fricks would add a powerplay goal late to give the Wings a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes.

The Wings would add to their lead to just over 2 minutes into the 2nd as Connor Burk would snap home his 1st of the season to give Weyburn their first two goal lead at 3-1. Carson Rose would add one later in the 2nd to give the Red Wings a 4-1 lead after 2 periods.

The Terriers would come out with some fight in the 3rd as they would two quick goals by Jordan Evans and the 1st SJHL goal from Addison Bazian to cut the deficit to just one at 4-3. Donovan Lumb would pull the Wings ahead by a couple once again just over 2 mins later to make it 5-3. But Sookro would add his 2nd of the night on the PP to give the Terriers more life and just a 5-4 deficit. But just 16 seconds later, Elvis Jansons would put the final nail in the coffin as he would beat Pateman to give the Wings a 6-4 victory.

Jack Burgart stopped 25 Terrier shots to get the win while Cam Pateman made 31 of 37 stops In a losing cause.

The two teams will go right back at it on Saturday from the FAA at 7:30.
