Stamps explode for 10 as they hammer the Kings on Wednesday night

The Swan Valley Stampeders earned their 15th victory of the season on Wednesday night hammering the Dauphin Kings 10-2.

The Stamps for the 2nd straight night would get off to a quick start as Keaton Jameson would convert on the power play, goal number 14 on the season just 1:16 into the 1st to make it 1-0. They would make it 2-0 just 25 seconds later as Jaden Townsend would get a slick pass in front from Josh Tripp (pictured above) and pot home his 8th of the year to give the home side an early advantage. Connor Navrot would make it 3-0, 8:22 into the opening frame as Connor Navrot would net his 3rd goal in as many nights and 6th of the campaign to make it 3-0. Then before the first period buzzer could go off, Roblin's Jaden Townsend would make it a 4 goal lead with his 2nd of the period on a beauty feed from Shane Roulette. Shots 10-4 Swan Valley after 1 period.

Swan would add 3 more quick goals to start the middle frame off the sticks of Shane Roulette, Josh Tripp and Matt Osadick to give them a 7-0 lead early in the 2nd. The Kings would get on the board almost half way through as Landon Lushanko's long point shot would go over the left shoulder of Brett Evans for his 1st goal in the MJHL to make it 7-1. But the Stamps would regain their 7 goal lead, as Tripp add his 2nd of the period and 9th of the year making it 8-1 after 40 minutes.

Then 8:05 into the 3rd period Swan Valley would make it 9-1 as Derek Frater would pick up a loose puck and slip home his 1st goal as a Stampeder. The two teams would exchange goals late in third period from Lushanko (DAU) and Trevar Mann (SV) to finish off the scoring.

Grandview's Brett Evans earned his 12th win of the season making 27 saves in the win while Justin Anderson turned aside 22 shots in the loss.

The Stamps and Kings are now both officially on their Christmas break and they both will return back to face-off with the Selkirk Steelers. Swan will host them on January 3rd while the Kings will host them the very next night on Jan 4th in Dauphin.

Elsewhere in the MJHL,

Joey Moffatt had 2 goals to lead Portage to a 6-2 win over the Wayway Wolverines.

The line of Navrot, Mann & Jameson explode for 11 points in big win over Dauphin on Tuesday night

The Swan Valley Stampeders snapped a 4 game losing streak in a big way last night (Tues) hammering the Dauphin Kings 6-2 at Credit Union Place.

The Stamps would get off to a quick start as just 25 seconds in, Trevar Mann would be left alone in front and jam home his 9th of the season to make it 1-0 Swan. They would add to their lead just 2:16 later on the power play, as from below the line, Connor Navrot would bank one in off a Kings defenceman in front for his 4th to make it an early 2-0 lead. The Kings would be able to cut their deficit in half as Thomas Hansell received a nice pass from Mason Fischer and bury his 9th of the year to make it 2-1. But with 5:33 to go in the 1st period, the Stampeders would regain their 2 goal lead as Daylin Smallchild would walk in from the right point and let out a hard slap-shot that would beat Justin Anderson over the right pad for his 2nd to give his team a 3-1 advantage after 1 period. Shots 13-12 Dauphin after 20 minutes.

The visitors would add to their lead 4:47 into the middle frame as Connor Navrot (pictured above) would rip home his 2nd of the night past Anderson to make it a 4-1 Stamps lead. Riley Shamray would bring the Kings to once again within 2 with his 7th making it 4-2. Swan Valley would add 2 more late goals, 1:51 apart late in the 2nd off the sticks of Trevar Mann and Shane Roulette to give the road team a 6-2 lead after 40 minutes and that's where it would end off after a scoreless 3rd period.

Ethan Peterson earned his 2nd win of the season making 33 saves in the Stamps' net while Justin Anderson turned aside 43 shots in the losing cause.

Terriers' extend point streak to 3 games after SO loss in Wilcox

The Yorkton Terriers now have points in 3 straight games after a 4-3 shootout loss on the road to Notre Dame Hounds on Friday night.

The Terriers would strike first just 9:11 into the opening frame as Brendan Mark would make his way into the attacking zone and then find Slater Strong on a nice back-door feed and the Calgary product would tap home his 5th of the year to make it 1-0. They would add to their lead just 3:22 later, as Ben Solomon's long point shot would take a big bounce off the end boards and would come out to 18 year old Chantz Petruic and he would put home his 10th goal of the season that would make it 2-0 for the road team. But the Hounds would answer back, 1:18 after as former Yorkton Terrier and Moose Jaw product Kaleb Bell received a nice feed in front from Curtis Wiebe and slip in his 3rd through the five-hole of Joe Marcouiler to make it a 2-1 Terriers after 20 minutes. Shots 16-11 Notre Dame through 1 period.

The Hounds would even it up just 2:51 into the middle frame as Riley Perka would beat the Terrier goalie over the left pad for his 4th and that made 2-2. They would then grab their first lead of the night later on in the 2nd, as Zack Kosteniuk would go top shelf for his 10th of the season to make it 3-2 after 2 periods.

The visitors would get equalizer just over halfway through the third as Chantz Petruic would do a good job to keep it deep in the Hounds zone and then would finish off the play going bar down on Ryan for his 2nd of the night and 11th of the year to make it 3-3 to force extra time.

Overtime would solve nothing and in the shootout after the first two rounds produced no goals, Marshall Wilton would get the Hounds on the board and then Jake Ryan denied Brendan Mark to give the home team the extra point.

Jake Ryan made 24 saves in the Hounds goal to get his 11th victory of the season while Joe Marcouiler made 42 saves in the loss.

The two teams will go right back at it on Saturday as they wrap up their pre-Christmas schedule at the  Farrell Agencies Arena at 7:30.

Cameco's Hockey Day in Saskatchewan 2018 is coming to Balcarres

Cameco Hockey Day in Saskatchewan, and all the games and events that go along with it, are coming to the Town of Balcarres.

It will be held on the weekend of January 19th to the 21st.

The occasion gets started on the 19th with a banquet featuring 5-time Stanley Cup Champion, and Hockey Hall of Famer, Grant Fuhr. Tickets for the banquet cost $80 dollars.

On the 20th, there will be an SJHL matchup between the Melville Millionaires and the defending league-champion Battlefords North Stars; the Sask. Female Midget AAA League will be represented with a contest between the Melville Prairie Fire and Swift Current Wildcats; the Sask. Midget AAA Hockey League’s Yorkton Rawtec Maulers and Regina Pat Canadians will square off in the third game scheduled for that day.

Games on the 21st feature All-Stars from the Qu’Appelle Valley Hockey League going up against the Midget AAA Bethune Bulldogs that will compete for the 2018 Allan Cup.

The Saskatoon Westleys and Fort Knox of the Prairie Junior Hockey League will play each other on the 21st as well.

Tickets can be bought at several locations in Balcarres — the Town Office, Broncs Kitchen in the rink, Chatterson Lumber, Pattison Ag and R.W. & Sons Builders.

A weekend pass is $125 dollars, hockey passes are $40, tickets for any hockey game $15 dollars and banquet passes are $80 dollars.

A first time for everything
Cameco’s Director of Communications Jonathan Huntington says this is the very first time the event has been in Balcarres.

“It has not come to Balcarres before, it rarely comes to this region of Saskatchewan, it comes to this region once every eight years, so this is a rarity to come out to this Balcarres area,” Huntington admitted. “We never been here before so we’re thrilled to come and see this town embrace it.”

Huntington explains how the home-town of the Broncs got to host the event.

“Balcarres applied for the opportunity to have Cameco Hockey Day in Saskatchewan. We had a few communities apply, but Balcarres came forward with the best bid package, the best opportunity to raise money and impact the community, so we were thrilled to choose them.”

Supporting the local rink
Host Committee Chair Craig Geisler says this announcement means a lot to the community.

“For our little town to have a provincial event like this in our community, everyone’s excited” Geisler said. “It’s one of the things you can take pride in that you can show off your community to the rest of Saskatchewan and show that it’s a hockey hotbed.”

Balcarres mayor Kent Esplin says they’re hoping to raise 80 thousand dollars to pay off recent, much needed, renovations.

“If you were to look back in the day when it was first built, and what we have now, it’s second-to-none,” Esplin boasted. “The lobby area’s great, you can view on the inside you don’t have to go on the outside into the cold, we have a local restaurant in the rink now which we hadn’t had before.”

He added the improved rink has also helped out in increasing participation in hockey in the town.

With the new bells and whistles comes the cost, as the fundraising goal for this event is $80-thousand dollars to help pay off the recent renovations.

After a scoreless 2nd period, the Red Wings would continue to push for that equalizer and it would finally come with just over a minute to go in regulation. Mike Eskra would send a low-point shot and big Tyran Brown would pick up the rebound and jam in his 10th goal of the season to tie it up at 1-1 and send it to the overtime period.

In overtime, the Red Wings would control much of the play but it would be the Mils getting the winner in the final seconds. Terriers win 2nd straight in thrilling fashion on Tuesday night

The Yorkton Terriers won their 2nd straight game on Tuesday night as they beat the visiting Melfort Mustangs 4-3 at the Farrell Agencies Arena.

After a back and forth 1st period, the Mustangs would strike in the final minute as AP forward & Yorkton Rawtec Mauler forward Beau Stevenson would jump on a loose rebound and flip it over top of goaltender Ben Laidlaw for his 1st goal to make it a 1-0 Melfort after 1 period. Shots were 15-8 Mustangs.

Just over the half way point of the 2nd period, the Terriers would draw even as Cole Keenleyside would take a nice pass across from Dino Antonidas and hammer home his 7th of the season to make it 1-1. Then just 3:45 later, the home team would grab their first lead of the night as Austin Wieler's side angle shot would find its way through a screen Hunter Arps for the rookie defenceman's 2nd of the campaign to make it 2-1. But the Mustangs would knot it up with a late power play goal as Andrew Thompson would get his 8th of the year to even it up at 2-2 after 40 minutes.

The Terriers would regain their lead just 4:24 into the 3rd period as Quin Hobbs (pictured above) would head in alone and go back-hand shelf over Arps for his 3rd of the season to make it 3-2. It would stay like that til the final minute as with just 48 seconds left and an empty-net, Colin Schmidt would bang home his 11th of the year to tie the game back up this time at 3-3. The game looked like it would be headed for the overtime period, but Chantz Petruic had other ideas as would force a turnover at his own blueline and head on a breakaway with 19.1 seconds and make no mistake to give the Terriers the 2 points in thrilling fashion.

Ben Laidlaw was once again solid in the Terriers' crease making 36 saves for his 2nd straight win. Mustangs' goaltender Hunter Arps turned aside 23 shots in the losing cause.

Stamps; Terriers fall short in Sunday Night Recap

The Steinbach Pistons used a 3 goal opening period to pace them to a 6-1 win over the hometown Swan Valley Stampeders on Sunday night.

The Pistons would strike first just 2:32 into the 1st period as newcomer Mark Wilson's long point shot would beat a screened Brett Evans for his 3rd of the season to make it 1-0. Austin Heidemann would make it 2-0 Pistons just over 6 minutes later as he would finish off a nice feed from Tyson McConnell for his 13th of the year. The visitors would add 2 more late goals off the sticks of Braden Purtill and MJHL leading scorer Bradley Schoonbaert to make it 4-0 Steinbach after 1 period. Shots 13-8 Pistons.

Steinbach would add to their lead almost half-way through the 2nd as Daniel McKitrick would lead a 2 on 1 rush, and slide it across to Brendan Martin who made no mistake for his 5th of the season making 5-0. Then just a short time later, it would be Tanner Mole, shorthanded with a slap-shot beating Ethan Peterson over the right pad to make it a 6 goal lead. But on that same penalty, the Stamps would get on the board as Quinton Sudom's nice low shot would get re-directed by Stamps forward Jaden Townsend for his 7th, making it a 6-1 lead but thats as close as Swan would get.

Reigning MJHL Rookie of the Month Matthew Thiessen stopped 24 shots to earn his 13th win of the season while Brett Evans got the start for Swan and allowed 4 goals on 13 shots. Ethan Peterson in his Stamps' debut relieved Evans and played the last 2 periods making 21 saves on 23 shots.
