If Mils Head Coach & GM Jamie Fiesel wanted to start off 2014/15 SJHL season the right way, he got his wish on Thursday night as Melville (1-0-0-0) defeated the Estevan Bruins (0-1-0-0) 3-1 on SJHL opening night at the Horizon Credit Union Center.
Fiesel said on the post game show "They key for us is that we only let in one goal, , our penalty kill was good and to be honest were are a different team than other years we lean on you and try to wear you down then try to find ways to score"
The first period was a back and forth opening frame with both teams having some glorious chances especially on the teams respective powerplays, but both goalies in Sean Keuhn & Brett Lewchuk stood tall in between the pipes making it a scoreless hockey game after 1 period of play.
In the 2nd period, the Mils would come out a firing and would get rewarded for their efforts as just 2:09 into the middle frame, Kirk Bear's lazer wrist shot from the point would find its way into the back of the net to give the Mils a 1-0 lead. But just 1:35 later, in similar fashion, Bruins captain Nolan Nicholas would let go a point shot of his own that would beat the Mils netminder Keuhn for his 1st of the season to knot it back up at 1 apiece. The Mils would get into a little bit of penalty trouble as Mils Captain Allen Kilback would get kicked out for checking from behind, then dman Cole Berreth would follow to the box to set up a lengthy 5 on 3 PP for Estevan but they weren't able to convert because of 2 outstanding defensive plays by defenseman Ben Mack. On that ensuing PK, the Mils would get the eventual game winner as Landon Farrell would finish off a nice passing play with Reed Murray to give the hometown Mils a 2-1 lead. Then late in the 3rd, Brennen Miller would deflect home his 1st SJHL goal to give the Mils a little insurance.
The third period would solve nothing and the Mils would cruise to a a 3-1 opening night victory.
19 year old Flower Mound, Texas native Sean Keuhn (pictured above) had 31 saves to get his 1st SJHL victory while Brett Lewchuk had 22 saves in a losing cause.
These teams will go right back at it on Friday night this time in Estevan.
