Day 1 Recap of the MJHL/SJHL Showcase in Winnipeg

 


GAME 1:

MJHL 20U Red 1, SJHL 20U Gold 4


Ryley Morgan (Weyburn) scored twice while Ryan Dugay (Melfort) scored the game winner just over half-way through the 3rd period to lead the Team SJHL Gold to a 4-1 win over Team MJHL Red in the opening game of the showcase in Winnipeg.

Steven Kesslerling (Battlefords) also scored for the SJHL squad that got 28 stops from Josh Kotai (Battlefords) in the win.

Melville Millionaires' forward Jaxon Martens also earned an Assist in the game.

Steinbach's Travis Hensrud replied with the only goal for Team MJHL Red, who got 33 saves from OCN Blizzard netminder Chase Hamm in the loss.

MJHL 20U Black 4,
SJHL 20U White 0

Tresor Wotton of the Waywayseecappo Wolverines earned a 22 save shutout while Lucas Brennan (Selkirk) netted the GWG late in the 1st to lead the MJHL Black to a 4-0 victory over Team SJHL White.

Zach Brault (Winkler), Davis Fry (Steinbach) and Briley Wood (Neepawa) also scored for the MJHL team who outshot the MJHL squad 29-22.

Dawson Smith (La Ronge) made 25 saves for SJHL in the losing cause.

SJHL U18 5,
MJHL U18 4

Humboldt's Tim Kim (2G) and Estevan's Jag Phangura (1G 1A) had two points each to lead Team SJHL 18U Blue to a 5-4 win over MJHL U18 White to wrap up Day 1 of the MJHL/SJHL Showcase.

Zac Somers (Melfort) and Melville Millionaires' forward Carter McKay also chipped in offensively for the SJHL squad, while replying from the MJHL 18U's was Elliot Perrault (WPG Freeze), Jordan Murray (Portage), Nolan Chastko (Virden) and Carter Cormier of the Selkirk Steelers.
 
Yorkton Terrier rookie forward Dylan Ruptash chipped in with an Assist for SJHL.

Cody Jaman of Kindersley got the win in goal for Team SJHL with 23 saves/27 shots, while Neepawa G of Mason Lobreau of Team MJHL turned aside 29 shots in the loss.

Stampeders' point streak snapped after road loss to Steinbach on Sunday



The Swan Valley Stampeders dropped their final game on January on Sunday night, 5-3 on the road to the Steinbach Pistons. 

Trey Sauder, Collin Jennings and Warren Marcotte scored for the Stampeders who got 33 saves from netminder Kobe Grant in the loss. 

Langley Kruggel, Hunter Degelman, Dawson Milliken, Leo Chambers and Ian Amsbaugh replied with the goals for the hometown Pistons. 

The Stampeders' will return to action on Fri. Feb 10th hosting the Waywayseecappo Wolverines.

Melville Millionaires Coaches Show - (Jan 25th edition)

The SJHL's Melville Millionaires have announced the commitment of 2005-born defenceman Zach Reeder for the 2023/24 season.
 

The Regina product, in a 33 games with the Swift Current Legionnaires (SK U18 AAA) has compiled 14 assists.

Reeder spent the 2021/22 campaign with the Tisdale Trojans.

Jan. 24th Local SJHL/MJHL Recap

The Yorkton Terriers wrapped up their season series with Nipawin, with a 5-2 loss to the Hawks on Tuesday night.

The Hawks got the opening goal with 2:06 left in the 1st period as Alex Johnson deflected home a Tre Fouquette a point past Terrier netminder Tysen Smith for his 9th of the season to make it 1-0.

Then with just 2.1 seconds left in the first frame and face-off deep in the Nipawin zone, JD Hall won the draw back and Maddux Nollski went post and in by behind Jackson Fellner with just 0.5 seconds left on the clock to pull the visitors even at 1-1 at the Cage through 1 period.

Braxton Buckberger grabbed the Hawks their one goal lead back just 2:20 into the 2nd as he re-directed home his 16th of the season to make it 2-1.

But a quick response just over 3 minutes later by the Terriers as Cade Kennedy walked off the side-wall and he sniped in his 5th of the year over the right shoulder to pull Yorkton even. 

The Hawks would respond though late stages in the late stages of the period, capitalizing on couple break-downs in defensive zone by the Terriers and Buckberger & Eric Robbie helped the home side push their lead to 4-2 after 40 minutes.

Nipawin scored the only goal in the 3rd late as FX Bedard jammed in a rebound in front to put the game out of reach.

Jackson Fellner helped the Hawks get their 6th straight win making 26 saves on 28 shots while Terrier G Tysen Smith made 45 saves in the losing cause.

The Terriers return to action on Friday night hosting the Battlefords North Stars.

The Swan Valley Stampeders used a 5 goal 2nd period then hung on late to beat the OCN Blizzard 7-4 on the road.

Alex Walicki continued in his hot pace with 1G 2A to lead the way for the Stamps, who got singles from Steven Arp, Trey Sauder, Josh Danis, Myles Mason, Jakob Jones and Justin Keck. 

Riley Zimmerman, Alex Bernauer, Darik Feasey and Ashton Paul replied for the Blizzard.

Kobe Grant turned aside 34 of 38 shots to earn the win for the Stamps' while Chase Hamm made 23 saves in the loss.

The Stampeders' who moved into a tie atop of the MJHL's West division with the win will return to action on the road this Saturday visiting the Winnipeg Blues.

Elsewhere,

Tresor Wotton made 25 saves for the shutout to lead the Waywayseecappo Wolverines to a 3-0 win over the Winnipeg Freeze on home ice.

Carson Baptiste, Leyton Smith, and Kurt Rookes chipped in offensively for the Freeze.

The Wolverines' return to action on Thursday night hosting the Niverville Nighthawks starting at 7:30PM.

Local products help Team Ede capture CURLSASK Junior Men's Championships in Swift Current

The CURLSASK Junior Provincial Championships took place this past weekend in Swift Current with Balgonie's Elizabeth Kessel and the Martensville's rink of Logan Ede leading their teams to the women’s and men’s titles. 

On the men’s side, Ede, a Kipling product, held on for a 10-5 win over Josh Bryden from Regina

The Ede rink had some other local ties in Whitewood product Austin Krupski at lead, and Yorkton's Gerry Adam serving as Coach.

Kessel and her rink defeated Cara Kesslering 6-3 in the semi-final on Sunday before beating Madison Kleiter of Saskatoon 11-7 in the championship game.

The two rinks will now represent Team Saskatchewan at the New Holland Canadian Junior Curling Championship that will take place in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, from March 25 to April 2.

Jan. 20th Local MJHL/SJHL Recap


The Swan Valley Stampeders stretched their win streak to 3 straight after a 4-1 win on Friday night over the Portage Terriers, who had their win streak snapped at 7.

The visiting Terriers struck first in the opening period just 7:22 in as Austin Peters buried home his 12th of the season through the five-hole of Stamps' G Kobe Grant to make it 1-0.

But the Stampeders responded and tied it up at 1-1 as Jakob Jones forced a turnover deep and sent it in front to Josh Danis who sniped his 2nd of the year with 7:15 left in opening period to go to the first intermission knotted up.

Swan Valley netted the only goal of the 2nd with just 15 seconds left in the middle frame on the PP as Collin Jennings' long point shot was tipped in nicely by 19 year old F Alex Walicki for his 5th of the season making 2-1 Stampeders through 40 minutes.

In the third just 4:36 in, Walicki added his 2nd of the night while shorthanded as he chipped away a puck at the blue-line and then went in alone on a breakaway and made no mistake making it 3-1 before Jakob Jones iced it with his 20th of the season into the empty net with just over 2 minutes to go in regulation.

Kobe Grant (pictured above) was very solid in the Stamps' net making 37 saves on 38 shots, while Terriers' netminder Jayden Catellier stopped 23 shots in the loss.

The Stampeders' return to action on Saturday hosting the Selkirk Steelers, while the Terriers make the trek up north to OCN to battle the Blizzard.

The Melville Millionaires dropped their 4th straight, falling 4-1 to the Weyburn Red wings at Crescent Point Place.

Ty Mason led the way for the Red Wings with 1G 2A each while Ryley Morgan, Jackson Hassman and Jacob Kalin.

Jaxon Martens goal in his 3rd straight game was the only offence from the Mils, who got 33 saves from Clement Labillois in the loss.

Dazza Mitchell turned aside 23 shots to earn the victory.

The two teams will meet each again on Saturday in Melville.

Millionaires comeback falls short in home loss to Nipawin on Wednesday Night



Nathan Fox and Jaxon Martens scored third period goals for Melville but it wasn't quite enough as the Millionaires dropped their 3rd straight falling 3-2 to the visiting Nipawin Hawks. 

Maguire Ratzlaff, Reid McKay and Joel Mabin made it 3-0 heading into the 3rd for the Hawks, who've now won 4 straight games. 

Damon Cunningham made 36 saves for the Hawks in goal, while Mils G Clement Labillois turned aside 38 shots in the loss. 

The Millionaires return to action on Friday and Saturday for a home and home series with the Red Wings, starting tomorrow (Fri) in Weyburn.

Yorkton Terriers drop neutral site game in Wadena on Tueaday to Nipawin




The Yorkton Terriers dropped their 7th straight game on Tuesday night after falling 3-2 to the Nipawin Hawks in a neutral site game in Wadena. 

Cade Kennedy opened the scoring for the Terriers in the first before the Hawks rattled off 3 straight goals including two from Braxton Buckberger and a single from Carson Dobson to grab a two goal lead. 

Pavel McKenzie netted his 8th of the season in the third period but that's as close as the Terriers would get. 

The Terriers' return to action on Saturday night hosting the Melfort Mustangs, while the Hawks go right back at it tonight (Wed) visiting the Melville Millionaires at the HCUC starting at 7:00PM.

Local players selected for 2023 SJ/MJ Showcase in Winnipeg

 The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League announced their rosters for the SJHL-MJHL Showcase being held in Winnipeg on January 31st and February 1st.

A total of six teams will take part, with two U20 teams and one U18 team per league.

The Yorkton Terriers had two players selected for the Showcase in Canora product Clay Sleeva and rookie forward Dylan Ruptash.

Ruptash, from Edmonton, leads the team in points with 26 and all SJHL rookies in goals with 16, while Sleeva has 19 points in 35 games.

The Melville Millionaires also had two players selected in newly acquired forward Jaxon Martens and local product Carter McKay.

Martens joins the team as the leader in points with 29, all with the Flin Flon Bombers, while McKay has 20 points in 34 games.

Former Millionaire Zach Cain was also selected, while Terriers head coach and GM Mat Hehr will be an assistant coach for the U18 team.

Meanwhile, from the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, the Swan Valley Stampeders had five players selected, and the Waywayseecappo Wolverines also had five players selected.

Representing the Stamps is goaltender Kobe Grant, defencemen Warren Marcotte and Adam Rajsigl, and forwards Justin Keck and Steven Arp.

Wayway will see goaltender Tressor Wotton, defenceman Lucas Eagle and forwards Carson Baptiste, Andrew Boucher and Boone Mathison will also participate.

Stamps head coach Barry Wolff will head one of Manitoba’s U20 teams, while Wolverines’ bench boss Taylor Harnett was named an assistant coach for Manitoba’s U18 team.

Friday Night Local MJHL/SJHL Recap

The Swan Valley Stampeders snapped their 6 game losing streak in convincing fashion with a 7-2 win over the Selkirk Steelers on Friday night.

The Steelers struck first just 8:51 in as Tyson Smith's wrap-around sneaked by Loic Mainguy-Crepault for his 9th of the season to make it 1-0.

But the Stampeders responded though just 43 seconds later on the PP as Adam Rajsigl's point shot was deflected nicely by Swan River's Trey Sauder, for his 13th of the season making it 1-1.

Swan Valley grabbed their first lead late in the period on a beautiful finish from Justin Keck, for his team leading 17th making it 2-1 for the visitors after 1 period.

In the 2nd, the Stampeders added to their lead with a couple more PP goals just under a minute to make it 4-1 just 4:11 into the period. 

Swan Valley added a couple more in the 2nd off the sticks of Warren Marcotte (PP) and Jakob Jones to make it a 5 goal game.

But newcomer Rhett Marchant sniped his 1st as a Steeler with 3:49 left in the middle frame to make it 6-2 SV after 40 minutes.

Landon Gulutzan added his 2nd of the season for the Stampeders, which was the only marker of the third.

Loic Mainguy-Crepault made 23 saves to earn 7th win of the season while Josh Kirton made 27 stops in the loss. 

The Stampeders' wrap up their road-trip on Saturday in Niverville.

The Melville Millionaires had their 2 game win streak snapped after a 4-0 road loss to the Nipawin Hawks.

Terriers come up short on road in Estevan on Wednesday

The Yorkton Terriers dropped their 5th straight on Wednesday night, losing 5-3 to the Estevan Bruins at Affinity Place.

The Bruins got the opening goal just 42 seconds in as Caleb Allen's clearing attempt was cut off by Dan O'Neill who slid it over to Keagon Little, and he tapped in his 1st of the season to make it 1-0.

They added to their lead at 5:24 into the 1st period as Ilya Chmelevski took a nice back-door feed from Little and hammered home his 3rd to make it a two goal game.

But the Terriers cut their deficit back in half as Aidan Knutson sent a puck on net and somehow sneaked through Bruin G Jackson Miller for his 3rd of the campaign to make it 2-1 Terrier deficit through 1 period.

In the 2nd the two teams exchanged goals just 31 seconds apart in the opening minute as first just 11 seconds in, Gabriel Filion added his 2nd of the night making it 3-1 before rookie Dylan Ruptash responded with his team-leading 16th making it a one goal yet again.

The Bruins responded though on the 2nd of the night from Filion making it 4-2 after 40 minutes.

The two teams exchanged goals in the 3rd as Sal Collara made it 5-2, while with just over 3 minutes to go it was Pavel McKenzie cutting their disadvantage to just 2 goals for the Terriers but that's as close as they would get.

Jackson Miller earned his 3rd win of the season between the pipes making 28 saves on 31 shots, while Caleb Allen also made 28 stops for the Terriers in the loss. 

The Terriers' return to action on Saturday night hosting the Weyburn Red Wings, while the Bruins host the Notre Dame Hounds on Friday.

The Swan Valley Stampeders found some offence on Wednesday night, but fell one goals short losing 4-3 to the visiting Dauphin Kings.

Jakob Jones, Justin Keck and Trey Sauder all scored for the Stamps while Nolan Wickham, Jayden Harris, Matthew Gough and Mason Smith replied for the Kings.

Kings G Marko Belak made 42 saves on 45 shots to earn the win while Stamps' backstopper Kobe Grant stopped 34 shots in the loss.

The Stamps' look to snap their slide on Friday night on the road in Selkirk against the Steelers. GX94 will broadcast the game, with the pregame starting at 7:20 and the play by play kicking off at 7:30.

Millionaires' Suppin; Labillois earn SJHL Weekly Award Honors

It was a big weekend for the Melville Millionaires as they swept their Highway 10 rivals, the Yorkton Terriers thanks to a pair of 5-2 wins. 20-year-old Issac Suppin played a big part in the Mills getting 4 big points in the standings as he found the back of the net 3 times and added 3 helpers this weekend. It all started Friday night where he scored a pair. He then followed it up with a 4 point night Saturday with a goal and 3 assists. Since joining the Millionaires, Suppin has been a point per game player and has 5 goals and 9 assists in 14 games played.

Directwest Rookie of the Week:
Clement Labillois, Melville Millionaires (pictured above left)

Another goalie who had a superb weekend was Clement Labillois of the Melville Millionaires. The 19-year-old rookie started both games for the Mills this past weekend and was consistent, allowing just 2 goals against in both starts and made 55 saves combined in the pair of games. Labillois now sports a 5-6-0-2 record on the season with a 3.09 GAA and a .911 SV%.

Melville Millionaires active ahead of 2023 CJHL Trade Deadline Day

 




The Melville Millionaires have announced they've traded 20 year old captain and forward Zach Cain (pictured above right) to the Flin Flon Bombers in exchange for 20 year old F Jaxon Martens (pictured above left).

Conditional draft picks and future considerations are also associated with the deal.

Cain played in 69 career games in a Millionaires uniform, compiling 63 points. Currently this season the Pilot Butte product has 14 goals, 20 assists for 34 points in 32 games.

Martens, a Warman SK product is in 2nd season in the SJHL, and currently this season in 33 games has 11G 18A for 29 points.

During the 2021/22 season last year, Martens had 19 goals, 27 assists for 46 points.

Millionaires' deal F Wills to Sherwood Park Crusaders (AJHL); add G Rau from Princeton (KIJHL)

                                               

 

The Melville Millionaires have also announced they trade 19 year old forward Noah Wills to the AJHL's Sherwood Park Crusaders for a player development fee and future considerations.

The Swift Current product in 91 career games in a Millionaire uniform had 90 points.

This season with the Moneymen he had 10 goals, 29 assists for 39 points.

The Millionaires also added 2004-born G Ethan Rau from the Princeton Posse of the KIJHL.

Rau, hails from Calgary, AB had a 11-2-3 record with a 2.45 GAA and 0.923 SV% this year with the Posse.

He spent last season with Calgary Flames U18 AAA of the AEHL, finishing with a 13-4-3 record.


Baptiste nets GWG to lead Wolverines to weekend sweep of Swan Valley



Carson Baptiste scored the game winner just 6 seconds into the 3rd period to lead the Waywayseecappo Wolverines to a 2-1 win over the Swan Valley Stampeders, to complete the weekend sweep of their division rivals. 

Lucas Eagle (Waywayseeecappo) and Adam Rajsigl (Swan Valley) exchanged goals for both sides in the 1st period. 

Wolverine goaltender Tresor Wotton (pictured above)  made 30 saves on 31 shots to pull his team into sole possession of top spot in the West division, one point up on OCN and now three points up on the Stampeders who got 27 stops from Kobe Grant in the loss. 

The Stamps' return to action on Wednesday night entertaining the Dauphin Kings from the Centennial Arena, while Waywayseecappo returns to the ice on Friday night visiting the Winnipeg Blues.

Millionaires win 2nd straight to take both in Highway 10 home & home

The Melville Millionaires have started 2023 with back to back victories over the Highway 10 rivals.

Issac Suppin (3A) and Nathan Fox (1G 2A) each had 3 points each to help the Moneymen to a 5-2 win over the Yorkton Terriers to sweep the weekend series. 

Louis-Frederic Theberge, Aiden Robson and Zach Bansley (1st SJHL goal) also scored for the Mils who got 32 stops from Clement Labillois in the win.

Dylan Ruptash and Pavel McKenzie replied for the Terriers, while Tyson Smith made 33 saves in the loss.

The Millionaires' return to action on Friday night visiting the Nipawin Hawks while the Terriers will be on the road on Wednesday night visiting the Estevan Bruins. GX94 will broadcast the game with the pregame show starting at 6:50 and play by play kicking off at 7:00PM from Affinity Place.

Caden Drury (1st SJHL goal) and Tucker Buhay also scored from the Mils, while Dylan Ruptash and Brett Butz replied for the Terriers.

Clement Labillois made 23 saves on 25 shots to earn the win, while Caleb Allen allowed 5 goals on 14 shots.

Backups Luke Brunen (5 saves on 5 shots in MLV goal) and Tyson Smith (11 saves on 11 shots in YKT net) also made appearances in the net.

The two teams will meet once again on Saturday night in Melville starting at 7PM on "Teddy Bear Toss" Night at the HCUC.

Guerin Apperley scored the only goal and the game winner in the 1st period.

Local Junior teams make a couple deals ahead of Tuesday's CJHL Deadline


The SJHL's Melville Millionaires added a forward with Western Hockey League experience.

Melville acquired 2005-born Zach Bansley from the Melfort Mustangs in exchange for a second round draft pick in the 2023 SJHL draft.

Bansley, a Tisdale SK product was most recently with the WHL's Lethbridge Hurricanes where he posted one assist in 18 games.

Meanwhile, the Mils also moved 2002-born defenceman Kayden Skulmoski in a separate deal to the Niverville Nighthawks of the MJHL for future considerations.

The 20 year old Moosomin product had 10 points in 31 games since being acquired from the Grand Prairie Storm at the beginning of the season.

The Waywayseecappo Wolverines acquired Birtle product and 2005-born forward Aidan Sotas on Friday from the Portage Terriers in exchange for future considerations. 

Sotas had 1 assist in 20 games this season with the WHL's Portland Winterhawks.

Yorkton's Korczak records 1st NHL point in Vegas' win on Monday

It was a big night for the Vegas Golden Knights getting a victory over the defending champs but it was also a big night for Yorkton product Kaedan Korczak.

The 21 year old in his 2nd career National Hockey League game, recorded his 1st ever NHL point when he assisted on one of Nicolas Roy's two 2nd period goals in a 3-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche.

Korczak has spent much of the 2022/23 season with AHL's Henderson Silver Knights' recording 8 points in 30 games.
