Cards' Duncan leads way in Opening Day win over the Mils

The Yorkton Cardinals took first blood in the first Highway 10 battle of the 2014 WMBL season as they held on to beat the Melville Millionaires 6-5 at Pirie Field last night.

Cameron Duncan led the way for the Cards with a 3 for 5 night at the plate, all singles and also chipped with a RBI. Former Regina Red Sox Austin Drummonds and 2nd baseman Nick Gotta also had a couple hits for the Cards.

The Mils top 4 hitters in their batting order in Garrett Dodd, Tyler Enns, Nick Walker, and Logan Terwilliger each had 2 hits for Melville in a losing cause.

Jeff Pool would get the start for the Cards and go 4 innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits, walked 4 and struck out 2 but got the no decision. Big Righty Elliot King would get the win in relief for Yorkton. Blake Evetts started on the hill for the Mils and would be tagged with the loss allowing 4 runs on 7 hits over 4 innings walking 2 and striking out 5.

The Cardinals will return to action this afternoon when they travel to battle the Saskatoon Yellow Jackets at 2:05, the Mils are also on the road as they travel for a night game in Moose Jaw against the Miller Express.
