Red River Cup U18 Girls Football Championship debuts this week in Winnipeg

It will be another step forward for Women's football on the Prairies this week as the first ever Red River Cup U18 Girls High Performance Football tournament will take place from July 13th-17th in Winnipeg, MB.

The 6 a-side championship will feature two teams from Saskatchewan (Sask. Green & Sask. White) and two from Manitoba (MB Gold & MB Black) taking part.

Team Sask General Jason Schenn says it was something that came together within the last year.

"Us and my counterparts from Manitoba, we discussed how we were gonna help move the female game forward and we felt that with the growth of teams in Saskatchewan , we could move forward with something inter-provincially."

The teams from Saskatchewan consist of girls from the Melville Vipers, Moosomin Generals, Regina Victorias' and Yorkton Lady Gridders as well a few girls that play for the Regina Riot and Saskatoon Valkries of the WWCFL.

Schenn says to put it all together, it took a lot people getting involved.

"Like football, this is a total team effort from my counterparts in Manitoba putting all the work in to  host to the coaches from the our Sask club teams to the girls coming together, we are all in it for the right reasons to see the growth of female football across the country."

Rosebud Junior Royals crowned Bantam “A” Boys Softball Champions

For the 6th time in seven years, the Rosebud Junior Royals (formerly the Wadena Wildcats) have captured the Provincial boys softball

title. The tournament, held in Wadena, featured Saskatchewan’s three “A” teams, from Wadena and area, Saskatoon and Shellbrook. The Junior Royals won both round robin games on Saturday by scores of 8-0 and 10-5, giving them a bye to the Final. In the final, the boys faced the Saskatoon Selects. On the offensive side, Luke Scutchings was 2-for-3 with a double and triple. On defence, two outstanding plays by right fielder Karter Hamel and a outfield assist at home by centrefielder Griffen Helberg, stymied any chance of Saskatoon getting on the scoreboard. Koby Faubert would throw a complete game, 3-hit shutout as the Royals would take the Final 4-0.

Next up for Juniors is the Rosebud Royal tourney on July 14, then the Leslie Beach men’s tourney followed by the Canadian Championships in Saskatoon from July 30-August 4.

The Royals open up play against Newfoundland on July 31 at 9:00 AM. Many of the players then head to Swift Current in August 8 to represent Saskatchewan in the Western Canada Summer Games.
