Local product Campbell retires from Canadian Womens National team

(Hockey Canada Press Release)

Jessica Campbell has announced her retirement from international competition with Canada’s National Women’s Team.
“I want to thank Jessica for her dedication to our national women’s team program,” said Melody Davidson, general manager, national women’s team programs. “Her energy and passion for the game were undeniable and we wish her success in her new career in the industry inspiring the next generation.”
Campbell, 25, made her debut with Canada’s National Women’s Program in 2008 and won a gold medal with Canada’s National Women’s Team at the 2014 4 Nations Cup in Kamloops, B.C.
As captain, she scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team its first-ever gold medal at the 2010 IIHF World Women’s U18 Championship, where she was named Most Valuable Player by the IIHF Directorate. She also earned a silver medal at U18 women’s worlds in 2009, and finished her U18 career tied with Marie-Philip Poulin for the all-time program scoring lead with 33 points (14 goals, 19 assists).
The Rocanvillle, Sask., native was a two-time silver medallist at the 4 Nations Cup (2015, 2016) and twice won gold with Canada’s National Women’s Development Team at the Nations Cup (2011, 2013).
“My entire journey to Team Canada, has been a dream come true. I remember looking up to my hero Cassie Campbell at the age of five, dreaming of becoming the next ‘Campbell‘ to wear the Maple Leaf, and deciding to set my mind to it. Through all the hard work, endless sacrifice, sweat and tears, I’ve come to realize that no matter what path we take in hockey or life, what we set out to do, or how many medals we win, it’s important to leave those you meet, better than you found them,” said Campbell.
“I will always remain grateful for the friendships, leadership and coaching, that made my dream a reality, pushed me to be the best that I could be and made me a better person on and off the ice. I want to thank my teammates, the pioneers, the fans of this game, and all the inspiring individuals with Hockey Canada for making my experience with Canada’s National Women’s Team an incredible journey. What this game has given me will always be a part of who I am, and what I pass on to the next generation of aspiring hockey players. I look forward to my next chapter of growing the game.”
Campbell has accepted the position of lead power-skating instructor and assistant coach of the Midget Female Prep team at the Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy in Kelowna, B.C.

I caught up with Campbell to reflecting on her playing career

SVRSS Tigers earn Provincial Golf Title

(Submitted)

For the first time ever, the Tigers have claimed the MHSAA provincial golf title and will have a banner to hang in the SVRSS gymnasium.

The Tigers Girls foursome travelled to the Gilbert Plains Country Club on Friday, September 22, 2017 after earning the zone crown the previous week. They would face representatives of eight other qualifying urban and rural Manitoba high schools.

Coach Marni Zamzow shared “The two-time defending champions from Vincent Massey (Brandon) returned 2 of their 3 low scorers from the last two year’s championship teams, and the SVRSS team were aware Vincent Massey would be the team to beat”.

The round began under cool and rainy conditions but the 2016 provincial bronze medalists from SVRSS showed their experience handling the challenging conditions better than most on the front nine.

Team golf at MHSAA zones and provincials takes the top three scores from the four team members to calculate the “team score”. The Tigers depth is very evident as their third and fourth individual scores were identical. The SVRSS individual scores were Coral Zamzow 97, Erica Forsyth 100, while Shaelynn Lukey & Emily Simpson both carded a 114 on the challenging Gilbert Plains track.

The final podium results were:
1st – SVRSS Tigers 311
2nd – Garden City (Wpg) 338
3rd – Vincent Massey (Bdn) 340

Coach Ken Khadekin shared “Lukey and Zamzow will be graduating in the spring, so Forsyth and Simpson are expected to be actively recruiting potential teammates to our spring practices so SVRSS can defend the title next fall”.

Friday/Saturday Local SJHL & MJHL Recap

FRIDAY

The Melville Millionaires recorded their first win of the 2017/18 season on Friday night after a 3-2 win over the Weyburn Red Wings.

The Red Wings would strike first just 11:23 into the 1st as Derick Smith would jam home his 2nd of the season to make it a 1-0 lead. The Mils would answer back with a powerplay goal of their own as lose puck and finish his 1st of the season to tie it up at 1-1. But just 2:02 later on another man-advantage as Mike Eskra would go end to end and snipe it over the left shoulder of Colby Entz for his 1st to give the visitors a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes. Shots 9-6 Weyburn.

After a scoreless 2nd period, 20 year old Trevor Paradise tied it at 2-2 on a nice deflection on a Ryan Warner point-shot just 5:02 into the 3rd period to force overtime.

In overtime, Cory Schillo (pictured above) made a nifty move around a Red Wings defender and back-hand it past goaltender Carter Phair to give the Moneymen the two points.

Colby Entz made 22 saves for his 1st win of the season while Phair made 28 stops in the losing cause.

The Mils' next action will be at the SJHL Showcase in Saskatoon. They take on Battlefords on Sunday and the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Monday afternoon.

Terriers drop a 6-1 decision on road to the Notre Dame Hounds

For the first time in the 2017/18 SJHL regular season, the Yorkton Terriers have lost in regulation.

The Terriers fell on Thursday night, 6-1 to the Notre Dame Hounds at the Duncan McNeil Arena in Wilcox.

The Terriers got an early PP opportunity just 4 seconds into the game but they weren't able to convert and just seconds after it expired the Hounds capitalized as Chaz Smedsrud jammed it past Logan Bateman for his 2nd of the season to make it 1-0. The Hounds would then get two late goals just 1:36 apart off the sticks of Chance Longjohn and Curtis Wiebe to give the home-side a 3 goal lead at 3-0 after 20 mins with shots 17-3 ND.

The Hounds would add another in the 2nd period just 3:36 into it, as Colby Brandt made a nice move around a couple Terrier defenders and put home his 2nd of the year to give Notre Dame a 4-0 lead after 40 minutes. Shots were 31-7 ND after 2 periods.

Power play goals would be the theme for the Hounds in the 3rd as they would add couple more markers from Marshall Wiltom and Connor Mylymok to push their lead to 6-0. Yorkton would add one late as Shane Sherban would break the shutout of Jack Ryan with his 2nd with just 3:50 remaining to make it a 6-1 Hounds final.

Jack Ryan made 13 saves on 14 shots in the Hounds net for his 1st SJHL win while Logan Bateman had his record drop to 1-1-1 on the season making 41 saves in the loss.

The two teams will meet on Friday night for the back end of the home and home series. Game time is at 7:30 from the Farrell Agencies Arena.

2017 SJHL Showcase set to begin on Sunday

(SJHL Press Release)

One of the mandates of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League is to promote its players for opportunities to continue playing the game while gaining an education after their junior career has been completed and the first major event to do just that takes place this weekend when the annual Showcase is set to begin on Sunday in Saskatoon.

The Showcase gathers all 12 teams into one location where each club will play a pair of contests with points gained from those matches counting in the overall standings. The philosophy behind this format is simple: it allows scouts from various levels – CIS, NCAA, WHL and NHL – to view the players at one time and in one place and also provides for easier accessibility to these players so that more information can be garnered.

There are a couple of notable changes this year with the event being held at the Hamm Latrace Arena (1347 Fletcher Road – beside Gordie Howe Park) in Saskatoon as opposed to the Legends Arena in Warman and the other is that there will be no Young Guns contests preceding the event.

Another change is the partnership with the Knights of Columbus that has been struck up for the event. The K of C will be charging $10 admission per day for adults with proceeds being split between that group and the SJHL.

The Showcase is held early in the season to give scouts an opportunity to see what kind of talent is out there and it also falls into a favourable rotation for that group who attend similar events in other leagues prior to and immediately after the SJHL Showcase.

Armed with the information gleaned from this event, the scouts will return to Regina in mid-January when the inaugural SJHL/MJHL showcase will be staged. Evaluations will be more complete with this additional showcase of talent and it is hoped that more players get opportunities to continue to pursue their dream of playing the game while also getting an education.

Following is a complete list of games to be played at the SJHL Showcase. Fans and scouts alike can expect thrilling and competitive games throughout.

Terriers get a point but fall in overtime in their Home Opener to the Red Wings.

The Yorkton Terriers earned 3 out of a possible 4 points on SJHL Opening Weekend after a 3-2 overtime loss on Sunday night to the Weyburn Red Wings

The Red Wings would strike first on the power play as Erik Olson's long point shot would be deflected in nicely by newcomer Derick Smith for his 1st SJHL goal that got past Logan Bateman to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead. The Terriers would answer back 9 minutes later as the loose puck would be jammed home by veteran Quin Hobbs to tie it up at 1-1 after 20 minutes. Shots 15-9 Red Wings.

The visitors would regain that one goal lead just 3:39 into the 2nd as Cole Woodliffe would bang home his 1st of the season to make it 2-1. But once again the Terriers would respond as 20 year old Kaleb Bell would finish off a nice passing play from William Brochu for his 1st with 5:02 left in the middle frame as the two teams were deadlocked at 2 after 2 periods. Shots were 29-14 Weyburn.

After a scoreless 3rd period, it would be Matthew Jones netting the overtime winner as his snapshot beat Bateman for his 1st SJHL goal to give the Red Wings the extra point.

Arik Weersink made 25 saves on 27 shots for his 1st win the SJHL, while Logan Bateman put together his 2nd straight solid start making 40 saves in the losing cause.

The Terriers next game will be on Thursday night when they visit the Notre Dame Hounds. GX94 will broadcast the game with Yorkton Dodge Junior Hockey, pregame 7:50 pxp at 8PM from the Duncan McNeil Arena.

Other SJHL Result had the Humboldt Broncos come back to beat the Notre Dame Hounds 4-3 in the SO.

The contract holds an average annual value of just over $4.16 million.

Last Chance Disc Golf Event Set for Melville

If you are a disc golfer still wanting to qualify for the Farrell Agencies Champions’ Challenge, then you will want to mark Sunday, Oct.1 on your calendar

. That is the day the ‘Last Chance Qualifying Tournament will be held at the Melville Disc Golf course.

“The Champions Challenge is for the best-of-the-best,” explained Parkland Association of Disc Golf (PADG) Tournament Chair Trevor Lyons. “You have to be a PADG member and finish in the top two of one of our tournament series events. “So far we have had a deadly dozen qualify, but we wanted to give our members one last chance to get into the event for the one-of-a-kind champion’s jacket.”

The Last Chance Tournament will qualify from one-to-four for the big event to be held Oct. 15, at the Asessippi Beach & Campground north of Russell, MB. Entry fee for the tournament will be $10, with those qualifying for the Champions’ Challenge receiving $20 as a prize. Players will play two rounds of 18

. The tournament in Melville will have an additional purpose, to raise awareness of the course and sport in Melville. “It’s a great course, but underutilized.

We hope hosting the Last Chance event at the course we’ll get a few local people out perhaps participate, but at least take in the event and learn a bit more about disc golf,” said Calvin Daniels PADG President.

Melville disc golfer Josh Gregory, already qualified for the Champions’ Challenge, said he hopes the event becomes a first step into growing the sport in his city. “If we can get a bit more interest with this tournament, it will hopefully grow,” he said. “I would love to hold some how-to-play clinics with local groups and schools in the spring, and I know the PADG would be more than happy to help in anyway it can.”

From there it is hoped a regular ‘disc golf night’ might follow at the Melville course in 2018, and Gregory said he and the PADG are hoping to host a regular tournament in spring as well. Anyone wanting to enter the Last Chance Tournament, (entry can be made the day of event), or learn more about the Melville course or disc golf in general can email padg.yorkton@gmail.com -
