The Yorkton Terriers increased their winning streak to 4 games in a big way on Friday night as they hammered the Humboldt Broncos 7-0.

The first 10 minutes of the game was very back and forth with the Broncos having some very good chances but Kale Thomson stood tall until the Terriers got 2 late goals in the 1st period off the sticks of Daylan Gatzke and Tayler Thompson to give the Terriers a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Captain Mospanchuk nets shootout winner as Mils slip by Bruins

The 1st Place Melville Millionaires pulled another rabbit out of their hat on Tuesday night as they come back from 4-2 down in the latter stages of the 3rd period, to beat the hometown Estevan Bruins 5-4 in the shootout.

The Mils would open the scoring on the power play just 9:54 into the 1st period when Simon Genereux would send a nice pass back door and Eric Meyer would make no mistake for his 6th goal of the season to give the Mils an early 1-0 lead. But just shortly after the Bruins would even it up at 1-1 as Nick Egan's long shot from the point would some how hit the back of the net behind goaltender Isaiah Plett for his 4th of the season to make it even at 1-1 after 1 period of play.

The game would stay tied until the 9:41 mark of the 2nd period as he would take a nice breakaway feed shorthanded from Sam Williams and go forehand, backhand past Matt Gibney for his 9th of the season to give the Mils a 2-1 lead. But the Bruins would come right back just 59 seconds later on the powerplay as David Robertson's one timer would beat Plett for his 5th to even the game back up at 2-2. Then just 6:08 later, the Bruins would get their first lead of the night as Keagan Allison would finish off a mad scramble in front for his 9th of the year to give the Bruins a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes of play.

The Bruins would take a two goal lead just before the halfway mark the 3rd period, as former Millionaire Michael Sagen would go top shelf on Plett for his 14th to make it 4-2 Bruins. The Mils though would start their comeback with 5:27 left in the 3rd as Kelvin Walz would take a nice feed from below the goal line from Colin Mospanchuk and make no mistake for his 19th goal of the season to cut the lead to 4-3. Then with 2:45 remaining, Kilback would get slashed down and the Bruins' would go to the box, and just 40 seconds into that powerplay, Alec Brandrup hard one timer would beat Matt Gibney for his 6th to tie it up at 4-4.

Overtime would solve nothing, but the Bruins did have a powerplay which they couldn't convert on.
Then in the shootout, the first 9 shooter between two teams would all miss until the Colin Mospanchuk ( pictured above )  would end it as he would go five hole on Gibney to give the Mils a 5-4 shootout victory and their 3rd straight win.

The Mils powerplay was very good once again converting on 2 of their 3 chances on the night, while the number 1 ranked Bruins powerplay was 1/7.

Isaiah Plett stopped 44 of 48 shots for the win while Matt Gibney turned aside 40 shots in a losing cause.

The Mils now sit 4 points clear of the Yorkton Terriers for top spot in the Viterra Division and the SJHL and their next action will be on Friday night when they take on the Notre Dame Hounds at 7:30 in a neutral site game in Fort Qu'Appelle before returning home on Saturday night to host the Humboldt Broncos.

The Broncos would take control and take alead in the shot column as well due to an abundance of penalties takingby Yorkton but the Terriers penalty kill did a very good job and also Kale Thomson was very sharp in the final 2 Periods.

Terriers give up 5 in the 3rd as they fall at home to La Ronge

The Yorkton Terriers let one slip away on Tuesday night as they lost their 2nd straight 6-4 to the La Ronge Ice Wolves at the FAA.

It was the start the Terriers were looking for as they would storm out of the gate just 55 seconds in when they Kailum Gervais would get his 8th of the season to give the Terriers a quick 1-0 lead. The Terriers would get a couple more of the sticks of Brett Boehm (20th) and Tyler Giebel (8th) to give the Terriers a 3 goal 3-0 lead. The Ice Wolves would add one in the latter stages of the third when Tyson Valette would add a marker to make it a 3-1 Terrier lead after 20 minutes of play.

Both teams would exchange chances in the middle frame, but both teams couldn't muster up a goal as the 2nd period would go scoreless so the Terriers continued to cling to a 2 goal lead after 40 minutes.

In the third the Ice Wolves would come out with a bang as they would notch 3 goals in just 2 minutes and 21 seconds as Daulton Siwak, Sebastian Beauregard and Jared Iron would get the goals to give La a Ronge their first lead at 4-3 early in the 3rd. Just 5:17 later, the Wolves would make it a 2 goal lead as former Millionaire Rhett Kehoe would give LR a 5-3 lead. Stamps get dumped 6-1 in Dauphin on Monday night

After a very solid effort on Friday night when the Swan Valley Stampeders got back on the win track, the Stamps had a disappointing effort on Monday night as they lost 6-1 to the Dauphin Kings.

It wasn't the start that the Stamps wanted in the 1st period as at one point in the 1st frame they were outshot 10-4 as Graham Hunt played very solid between the pipes for the Stamps but the Kings would get one past him as Cameron Whyte's nice backhander would go top shelf to give Dauphin a 1-0 lead after 1 period of play.

In the 2nd period, it got a little better for the Stamps as they were actually able to get some scoring chances which including a Max Flanagan breakaway but he couldn't convert. Dauphin would make them pay as  Jared Morris and Dillion McCombie would chip in with King's goal in the period to give the Kings' a 2 goal lead after 40 minutes.

The 3rd period would start with maybe a little controversy as Flanagan would get another opportunity when he had a wide open net and from my vantage point and from other sources around arena they said it went in, but the refs didn't think so and then the Kings' Braydon Cuthbert would come back the way and score to make it a 4-1 lead, which could've easily been 3-2. The King's would add two more as Tanner Lomsnes and McCombie his 2nd of the night, would give them a 6-1 lead and that's where it would end for a Dauphin victory.

Michael Stilliadis stopped 22 shots for his 13th win of the season, while Graham Hunt stopped 33 in a losing cause.

The Stamps next action will be Friday when they host the Winnipeg Blues at 7:30 from the Centennial Arena.

**Our next Yorkton Dodge Junior Hockey broadcast will be Sunday when the Stamps visit the Wayway Wolverines, pregame 7:20, play by play 7:30 on GX94.

Terriers Coaches Show/Post Game from Kindersley- Jan 13th Edition

Sunday 12 January 2014

Terriers get a point but fall in Shootout in Kindersley

The Yorkton Terriers managed to get a point but that's all they would get on Sunday afternoon as they lost 4-3 in the Shootout to the Kindersley Klippers.

The Terriers would start off the game like they did one night ago by opening the scoring as Tyson Enzie would take a nice feed from Tayler Thompson in front for his 9th of the season to make it a 1-0 Terriers lead after 20 minutes.

In the 2nd, the Terriers would add to their lead when Brett Boehm's shot would beat Tyrell King for his 19th to make it a 2-0 Terriers lead. Just 2 minutes later, Newcomer Riley Hunt would cause a turnover at center ice and go in and go top shelf on King for his 1st SJHL goal to give the Terriers a 3-0 lead after way thru the 2nd. But that's when the Klipps PP would take over as they would be able to covert on 2 of their powerplay attempts in the 2nd half of period 2 as Jared Pilet and Connor  Garden were able to get it past Riley Medves to cut the Terrier lead to 3-2 after 2.

It would stay like that until just under 4 minutes to go in the 3rd when Branden Lauder would get a nice bounce off the end boards to tie it up at 3-3. The Terriers would then have a glorious opportunity to win the game as they would have a 5 on 3 powerplay for almost a minute and a half but couldn't convert so it would head into overtime which solved nothing.

In the Shootout the first 5 shooters altogether from both sides would miss until Graham Lanigan snuck one thru Medves for The Shootout winner and a 4-3 Klippers win.

Tyrell King stopped 32 for the win Riley Medves making his 2nd straight start stopped 35 shots in a losing cause.

With the point the Terriers are now 4 points behind the Mils for top spot in the Viterra Division with a game in hand.

The Terriers next action will once again be on the road on Friday in Flin Flon before visiting the Nipawin Hawks on Saturday night.

**Our next Yorkton Dodge Junior Hockey broadcast will be tomorrow night (Mon) when Swan Valley visits Dauphin, pregame 7:20, play by play at 7:30 on GX94.

Flanagan with a couple to lead Swan Valley Past OCN 5-2

The Swan Valley Stampeders got back on the win track with a 5-2 win over the OCN Blizzard.

The Stamps would open the scoring just 4:31 into the 1st period as he would get his league leading 30th goal of the season to give the Stamps an early 1-0 lead. But just 3:14 later, the Blizzard would get the equalizer as Grant Valiquette would get his 15th goal of the season to tie it up at 1-1. It would stay like that until 16:06 mark of the 1st period when Flanagan would get his 2nd of the night and 31st of the season to regain the Stamps one goal lead at 2-1. Before the 1st period buzzer would go off Jagger Thomas would notch his 3rd of the year to give Swan a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes.

The teams would go back and forth in the 2nd period, and both would have some glorious opportunities but none could convert and it would remain 3-1 after 2 periods.

In the 3rd, the Stamps would increase their lead to 4-1 at the 11:13 mark when Bo Sigurdson would get his 6th goal of the season. The Blizzard would make it interesting as they would cut the lead to 2, as Chris Kravchuk long shot from the point would hit the back of the net behind Graham Hunt to make it 4-2 Swan. But that's as close as they would get as BJ Avery would get one more for good measure, his 1st of the season to give the Stamps a 5-2 victory.

Graham Hunt stopped 27 of 29 shots for the win in goal while Alex Henry made 42 saves in a losing cause.

The Stamps now move 4 points clear of the Blizzard for 3rd in the Sherwood. Their next game will be on Monday when they visit Dauphin 7:20/7:30 on GX94 from Dauphin's Credit Union Place.

Clark's Heroics lead Mils into 1st in Viterra with win over Humboldt

The Melville Millionaires moved into sole possession of 1st place in the Viterra division with a 2-1 win over the Humboldt Broncos.

The Broncos controlled the 1st period especially the first 10 minutes as they were out shooting the Mils 9-0 but Isaiah Plett kept them in the game with some big saves. The Mils then would get a powerplay and they would convert on it as Landon Farrell would pounce on a rebound for his 11th goal of the season to give the Mils a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

The 2nd period was a little more even, and a little more back and forth, but the middle frame would end with no scoring and still a 1-0 Mils lead after 2 periods.

In the 3rd period, the Broncos would get an early powerplay and would convert as Jarrett Fontaine would get his 9th to even the game up at 1-1. The score would stay like that until 1:33 left in regulation when Ashton Clark (pictured above)  would get pulled down and would be rewarded a penalty shot and he would make no mistake for his 3rd of the season to give the Mils a 2-1 win.

Isaiah Plett stopped 30 of 31 shots for his 19th win while Rylan Pashovitz stopped 20 in a losing cause.

The Mils next action in the first half of a weekend home and home on Friday when they visit Nipawin. They'll host Nipawin on Saturday.

Terriers Coaches Show- Jan 5th Edition

This Week's installment we talked to Terriers' Head Coach Trent Cassan about this past weekend's home and home sweep over the Melfort Mustangs; this Fridays trade deadline and also about this weekend's road trip through the Battlefords and Kindersley.

Terriers; Mils both crack the CJHL's Weekly Top 20 Rankings

CALGARY, Alberta – As the new year begins, the BCHL sees the Victoria Grizzlies slip past the Powell River Kings atop the Island Division, while the Penticton Vees ran into a tough Merritt Centennials team in the first game of a home and home this past weekend. The defending RBC Cup champion Brooks Bandits had a miraculous comeback victory over the Spruce Grove Saints and vaulted back into the Top 20 Rankings, while the Fort McMurray Oil Barons are starting 2014 off just as they started the season in September – by winning.
In the SJHL, the Yorkton Terriers are asserting themselves while being pushed hard by the Melville Millionaires, the Kindersley Klippers and the Humboldt Broncos. A similar situation is occurring in the MJHL, where the Selkirk Steelers are on an impressive 10-game winning streak and have pushed past the Steinbach Pistons and Portage Terriers.
The Soo Thunderbirds of the NOJHL, and the Fort Frances Lakers of the SIJHL still remain the class of their respective leagues entering 2014.
The Kingston Voyageurs of the OJHL are rolling and slipped past the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots, while the Whitby Fury enters the rankings as an Honourable Mention. In the CCHL, a small slip by the Carleton Place Canadians has cost them one spot in the Top 20. The Smiths Falls Bears are consolidating their grip on second place overall in the CCHL.
Les Pantheres de Saint Jerome hold onto a three-point lead ahead of the Granby Inouk for top spot in the LHJAAAQ. The Weeks Crushers are in complete command of top spot in the Eastlink Division and the overall lead in the MHL.
The CJHL would like to wish everyone a very happy, healthy and prosperous 2014. Game on!

Former Millionaire McNulty has joined the U of R Cougars

Its a move to a little bit closer to home and little bit closer to where he played his Junior hockey, but Ian McNulty is back in Canada playing hockey. The reigning SJHL Player of the Year Ian McNulty has joined the CIS' University of Regina Cougars for the 2nd half of the season and beyond.

In 15 games for the Southern Professional Hockey League's Columbus Cottonmouths, the Airdire Alberta native had 3 goals and 3 assists and 6 points.

McNulty spent his whole SJHL career with the Melville Millionaires, compiling 73 goals, 101 assists for 174 points in 153 career games, which ranks him number 2 all-time in scoring in Millionaires history.

He will join former Millionaires Jordan Reeve, Tyler Murray and Christian Magnus. Also on the Cougars are former Terriers' John Neibrandt and Austin Bourhis along with Canora's Skyler Hladun.

I chatted with him last week about joining the Cougars. You can hear from him below.

Mils sweep weekend series over Weyburn with 5-3 win on Sunday night

The Melville Millionaires won their 2nd straight game and swept a weekend home and home series with the Weyburn Red Wings with a 5-3 victory on Sunday night at the HCUC.

The Mils would open the scoring in the 1st period as Reed Murray would get a powerplay goal his 10th of the season to give the Mils a early 1-0 lead. It would stay like that until the 15:55 mark of the 1st period as Tyler Borstmayer who was in alone in front of Isaiah Plett would put it top shelf on the Mils net minder to even it up at 1-1. But just 1:17 later the Mils would regain their 1 goal lead as Connor Tudor would go top shelf on Jack Burgart for his 2nd goal of the season to give the Mils a 2-1 lead. But it would be the Red Wings getting the last laugh of the 1st period as it would be Shain Scheschuk intercepting an errant Mils pass to get a short handed marker to even it up at 2-2 after 1 period.

In the 2nd period it would be a back and forth period, but as the period went on it would be the Mils having most of the control as they had great opportunities but couldn't beat the Red Wings goaltender and the 2nd period would go scoreless and it would sit at 2-2 after 40 minutes of play.

In the 3rd period, it would be the Mils getting the early powerplay and they would convert as Kelvin Walz (pictured above)  would get his 14th of the season to give the home team once again a 3-2 lead. Just 3:34 later the Mils would get their first 2 goal lead as Tyson Predinchuk would bang it home for his team leading 18th goal of the season to make it 4-2. But the Red Wings would make it interesting with 11:18 remaining as Jacob Jeske would beat Isaiah Plett to cut the Mils lead to 4-3. But Kelvin Walz would get the insurance marker his 2nd of the night and 15th of the season to give the Mils a 5-3 victory.

Isaiah Plett stopped 26 of 29 shots for the win while Jack Burgart stopped 33 shots in a losing cause.

The Mils 2nd ranked powerplay was 3-6 on the evening. Their next action will be on Wednesday night when they visit the Humboldt Broncos. Pregame show 7:20, pxp at 7:30 on GX94 from the Elgar Peterson Arena in Humboldt.

Terriers win 2nd straight 5-2 over Melfort

The Yorkton Terriers won their 2nd straight game and moved 3 points clear of the Melville Millionaires for top spot in the Viterra division standings as they dumped the Melfort Mustangs 5-2 on Friday night at the FAA.

The Terriers didn't waste any time opening the scoring as just 56 seconds into the game Tayler Thompson would finish off a nice feed in front from Brett Boehm for his 11th of the season to give the Terriers a early 1-0 lead. But just 37 seconds later it would be the Mustangs getting the quick equalizer as Cole Hrysky would slip one past Kale Thomson to tie it up at 1. It would stay like that until the 12:15 mark of the 1st when Adam Santoro would notch his 2nd SJHL goal to give Yorkton a 2-1 lead after 1 period.

In the 2nd, it would be all Terriers has they would come with pressure after pressure and they would be greatly rewarded for the efforts as they would get 3 goals in the middle frame of the sticks of Dylan Johnson (6th), Brett Boehm (16th), and Matthew Cox would get his 1st SJHL goal which would chase Austin Rediron out of the Mustangs goal, in relief for Jack Romaniuk.

In the 3rd, it would be the Mustangs controlling much of the play and they would get the lone goal of the period in the latter stages of the period to give the Terriers a 5-2 victory on home ice.

Kale Thomson stopped 32 of 34 shots for his 19th win of the season, while Austin Rediron would get the loss as he let all 5 goals in on 19 shots before being relieved by Jack Romaniuk who stopped all 13 shots he faced.

The two team will go right back at it on Saturday in the rematch 7:30 faceoff from the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort.
