Ochapowace's Bear signs 1 year extension with the Carolina Hurricanes



The Carolina Hurricanes have announced that they've re-signed defenceman Ethan Bear to a 1 year contract extension.


The 25 year old product of the Ochapowace First Nation just completed his 3rd NHL season, and 1st with the Hurricanes compiling 5 goals and 9 assists for 14 points in 58 games.


Carolina acquired Bear from the Edmonton Oilers last offseason.

Swan Valley Stampeders complete 3-team trade with Blackfalds (AJHL) & Winnipeg Blues (MJHL)

 The Swan Valley Stampeders have made their first offseason trade as Head Coach and General Manager Barry Wolff looks to retool his team ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Swan Valley has teamed up with the Blackfalds Bulldogs and the Winnipeg Blues in a three team transaction.

The Swan Valley Stampeders traded 2002-born goaltender Brock Moroz to Blackfalds for a Player Development Fee.

Blackfalds then traded Moroz, and a PDF, to the Winnipeg Blues for Tyler Teasdale.

Moroz was acquired by the Stampeders Dec. 10, 2021 to be a back up to Kobe Grant while Dylan Black was injured and didn’t see any action in the short time he was with the Stampeders.

SaskEast Hockey League to tentatively grow by 4 for 2022/23 season




The SaskEast Senior Hockey League will have 4 teams tentatively joining the league for the 2022/23 season.
Expansion applications from Cote Selects and Wapella Blackhawks were accepted (with conditions) as well as intentions from good-standing members Langenburg and Hudson Bay to ice teams this upcoming season.

These teams will join the Rocanville Tigers, Theodore Buffalos, Canora Cobras, Whitewood Orioles and Ituna Avalanche who iced teams in the league's inaugural season this past year.

Swan Valley Stampeders' hire Mason as new Assistant Coach

 




The Swan Valley Stampeders of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League are excited announce the addition of Dakota Mason as the team's new Assistant Coach. 

The 30 year old Mason most recently spent this past season as Associate Coach & Head Scout with the Princeton Posse of the KIJHL. 

Mason's playing career included one year in the NAHL and two years with the AJHL's Brooks Bandits including helping them capture a RBC Cup in 2013.

Melville to host SaskMan Junior Showcase this September!

The Horizon Credit Union Center in Melville will host the SaskMan Junior Showcase coming up this September.


The showcase will be held on Sept. 8th, and Sept 10th & 11th featuring the Junior A preseason games with the Millionaires, Yorkton Terriers, Dauphin Kings, Notre Dame Hounds and Swan Valley Stampeders taking part.

Sept 8th- Swan Valley Stampeders vs. Melville Millionaires  (7:00PM SK time)

Sept 10th - Yorkton Terriers vs. Notre Dame Hounds  (2:00PM)

Local products help Team Saskatchewan capture third straight Football Canada Cup

Team Saskatchewan completed the three-peat at the 2022 Football Canada Cup in Kelowna, BC. 


The Saskatchewan squad which included local products Aidan Leslie (Yorkton), Hayden Russell (Yorkton) and Joey Palagian (Canora) beat Alberta on Sunday, 13-1 in the Gold Medal Game. 


Saskatchewan beat Nova Scotia 40-0 in their opener, and 23-11 over Ontario in the Semi-Finals to advance to the Championship Final.

Millionaires acquire Moosomin product Skulmoski from Grande Prairie Storm (AJHL)



The SJHL's Melville Millionaires' completed a deal with the AJHL's Grande Prairie Storm on Wednesday. 


The Moneymen picked up 2002-born defenceman Kayden Skulmoski from the Storm in exchange for future considerations. 



The Moosomin product had 2 goals, 12 assists for 14 points in 60 games with the Storm this past season.

SJHL/MJHL Showcase will return in 2023

  The Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) and Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) are pleased to announce the joint MJHL-SJHL Showcase presented by Alt Hotel Winnipeg will return for the 2022-23 season.

The showcase event will be held in Manitoba for the first time, taking place on January 31-Feb 1, 2023 at the impressive Seven Oaks Sportsplex in Winnipeg, MB.

The joint Showcase will feature 3 select teams from each league made up with the top 60 players in the MJHL and in the SJHL. The 3 teams representing each league will consist of players aged 16 to 20 who will be selected by the coaches from their respective leagues. One team will be comprised of players who are 18 and under and two teams will be made up of players who are 20 and under – Each team will play 2 games during the high-performance event.

“The MJHL is pleased to continue our strong partnership with the SJHL and we are extremely excited to host this amazing event in Manitoba, especially after not being able to hold the event last season,” explained MJHL Commissioner, Kevin Saurette. “This event gives athletes from each league an incredible opportunity to showcase their skills and abilities in a high-performance environment in front of scouts from all higher levels of hockey.”

Annually, the Showcase is heavily attended by NHL, NCAA, Major Junior and University Programs from across North America and this event will be another important step for MJHL & SJHL athletes in attracting the attention of the many scouts / coaches that will be in attendance.

“We look forward to building off the success of the previous three years of the joint Showcase held in Saskatchewan and are ecstatic to be able to provide this wonderful opportunity for our elite athletes once again,” shared SJHL Commissioner, Kyle McIntyre.

Yorkton United captures 3 Sask. Soccer Provincial Championships in Saskatoon



It was a very successful weekend for Yorkton United FC at the 2022 SaskTel Outdoor Youth 11-Aside Provincial Championships in Saskatoon.

Yorkton captured the 15U Boys championship with a 1-0 win over Lakewood Revolution, the 19U Gold Medal game with a 4-0 victory over Melfort International, and finally Yorkton beat the PA Celtics 2-1 in the final of the 19U division. 

Yorkton's Angela Fetsch was also named the U19 Girls Most Valuable Player.

2022/23 SJHL Schedule has been released!





The 2022/23 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League Schedule has been released, with regular season opening up on Fri. Sept 16th.

The Yorkton Terriers will open up that night visiting the Estevan Bruins, while the Melville Millionaires' kick off their season with their home opener that night hosting the Weyburn Red Wings.

The first Highway 10 battle between the two teams goes on Fri. Oct 7th in Melville.

2021/22 MJHL season was a profitable one for the Swan Valley Stampeders

 





The Manitoba Junior Hockey League's Swan Valley Stampeders' held their annual general meeting last night (Wed), and it was announced the team earned a profit from the 2021/22 season.

"We had a profit of just over $31,000 from the past season, we were able to stick closely to our budget & hit all of our fundraising plus we had a pretty healthy crop which us bring in a bit more revenue than we expected," President and Governor Cramer Coulthart said. 

Also from the meeting, the Stampeders' saw two board members resignin Kim Kosokowsky and Brian Gilroy, while adding a new member, alumni Evan Morden.

Coulthart noted that the hockey operations staff returning include Head Coach/GM Barry Wolff, Athletic Therapist Kate Wiens, Head Scout Mitchell Kirkup while new full-time Assistant Coach will be announced shortly.

Local product Campbell named Asst. Coach with the AHL's Coachella Valley Firebirds



 Local product Jessica Campbell continues her rise in the professional coaching ranks becoming the first female Assistant Coach in the American Hockey League.

The product of Rocanville was officially named today (Tues) as a new Assistant Coach with the AHL's Coachella Valley Firebirds, the affiliate of the Seattle Kraken and will join Head Coach Dan Byslma behind the bench.

Campbell most recently served as an assistant coach for Germany at the 2022 IIHF Men’s World Championship, and will coach at the development camp of the NHL's New York Rangers next week.

The Firebirds will play in their inaugural season during the 2022/23 campaign.
