Gervais nets OT winner as Terriers snag Game 1 of Canalta Cup Final

The Yorkton Terriers were behind for just about half of the hockey game but came from behind to defeat the Melville Millionaires 2-1 in overtime to take a 1-0 series lead in the Best of 7 Canalta Cup Final.

The first period would be a little tense for both sides as both teams tried to get out some early jitters and get into the hockey game. But it was the Yorkton Terriers taking the control for most of the opening period, outshooting the Mils 10-7 in a scoreless opening frame.

The Melville Millionaires were kinda turned the tide in their direction as they had some great chances early on, and then they would be rewarded for their efforts just under half way through the middle frame, Brady Constant would jump on a loose puck and put it past Kale Thomson for his 4th of the playoffs to make it a 1-0 Mils lead after 40 minutes.

In the 3rd it would be all Yorkton Terriers, as they were all over the Mils having chance after chance, but Mils' netminder Isaiah Plett was outstanding keeping his team in front including a couple of highlight reel saves. But the Terriers would be able to solve the Mils netminder with just 40 seconds left as Brett Boehm would jump on a juicy rebound and put it home for his 9th of the playoffs to even things up at 1-1 headed to OT.

In the opening shift of the OT, the Mils would have a great chance to end it, but Lane Harbor was robbed by the right hand pad of Kale Thomson. Then at the 2:39 mark of the extra period, the Terriers would end it as Kailum Gervais would finish off a nice passing play and slip it home for his 4th of the playoffs and 2nd OT winner of the post season to give the Terriers a 2-1 Game 1 win.

Kale Thomson stopped 24 shots for his 9th win of the playoffs, while Isaiah Plett stopped 44 shots in a losing cause.

The two teams will go right back at it on Saturday night for Game 2 as the Melville Millionaires host the Yorkton Terriers at the HCUC. Pregame 7:15, PXP at 7:30 on GX94.

Analysis:

Its one of the most anticipated match-ups in Junior hockey history and for the first time, the two Highway 10 rivals the Melville Millionaires and Yorkton Terriers will battle it out for the Canalta Cup Championship.

Both teams have advanced to this championship final in dominant fashion during the playoffs , the Yorkton Terriers defeated the Notre Dame Hounds and Humboldt Broncos in 5 games in their Quarter & Semi-Finals respectively. Meanwhile the Melville Millionaires swept their opening round Quarter-Final series vs. the Kindersley before defeated the Battlefords North Stars 4 games to 1 in the semi-final round.

The Terriers up front have been led by the efforts of 19 year old Brett Boehm who after a quiet first round series, came on  in the 2nd round scoring 7 goals and 10 points in their seni-final win over Humboldt. Also upfront, Tyler Giebel and Kailum Gervais have been chipping in on a regular basis in the post season while Dylan Johnson and  Jordan Ross have scored some big goals in these playoffs. One status up in the air, is that of 20 year old Tayler Thompson who missed the final 2 games of the Semi-Final series'. For the Moneymen, Lane Harbor has been a pleasant surprise for the Mils' and has proved he is a playoff player leading the Mils in goals in the playoffs with 5, while centerman Allan Kilback and Kelvin Walz have been their consistent selves. Like the Terriers, the Mils have a 20 year vet forwards whose status is still up in the air, as captain Colin Mospanchuk who was knocked out of Game 4 of their Semi-Final series after taking a big hit from Stars' F Cam Blair, didn't play in the teams clinching Game 5 victory.

On the backend, the Terriers are led by reigning SJHL Defenceman of the Year Chase Norrish who after a very successful regular season, has maybe even topped that play with now leading the playoffs in scoring with 7 goals and 14 points that includes a couple of OT winners in their 2nd round win over Humboldt. Chase's Twin brother Brady and Captain Devon McMullen are no slouches either and have the ability to control the series' from the backend Tanner Lischynsky, Dylan Baer and Dallas Rossiter complete a very deep backend. For the Mils', the play of Adam Koopman who has been getting better and better as the playoffs go on, especially in Game 5, where he might've played his best game as a Millionaires. The Mils will also need to get offence from the backend to be successful from the likes Adam Dibella, Alec Brandrup, Simon Genereau, Cole Berreth and Matt Carr.

In once again, what might be the most intriguing matchups of a series is in between the pipes where Isaiah Plett has been outstanding in these playoffs with a  7-1 record and a GAA of under 2, with the only thing stopping him was an illness that prevented him from starting the Game 5 clinching victory but that's when his backup Richard Palmer stepped up in his 1st Junior A playoff start record a shutout. Then on the other side the Terriers boast the SJHL's Goalie of the Year in Kale Thomson who at times in the playoffs hasn't been his usual self giving up 5 and 6 goals respectively in the Semis, but has showed for most of the postseason that he  is the SJHL's most elite puckstopper.

So for one club they are looking to repeat as SJHL Champs, and earn a trip back to the Western Canada Cup, while the other is trying to capture that first league title in team history. It should be a dandy of a matchup  and just great overall series' for both teams.

**Winner of this series will be advance as the SJHL rep to the 2014 Crescent Point Energy Western Canada Cup starting April 26th in Dauphin, Manitoba.

Mils; Terriers Highway 10 Super Series Has Become a Reality

The Melville Millionaires punched their ticket into the SJHL's Canalta Cup Final as they shutout the Battlefords North Stars 2-0 Game 5 victory to win the Best of 7 SJHL Semi-Final series.

In the 1st period, the Mils had a lot of chances in that opening period having a number of quality odd man chances but just couldn't convert meanwhile the Stars best quality chance came when Tanner Quinn got a shot on Richard Palmer (who made his 1st SJHL Playoff Start) but Palmer made a solid save. Both teams were not able to break through in a scoreless opening period.

The 2nd period would produce the games opening goal as the Mils on the 4th powerplay of the night, Cole Berreth would take a nice feed cross crease and put it into had the open cage for his 1st goal of the playoffs to make it a 1-0 Mils lead.

In the 3rd period both teams would have their fair share of chances, the Mils a couple breakaways to make it a 2-0 lead, while North Stars had their chances to try and even it up but both teams couldn't make it happen early on. That was until the final minute when Reed Murray would ice it into the empty net for his 4th of the playoffs to make it a 2-0 Game 5 Clinching win.

Richard Palmer, making his 1st SJHL Playoff start would stop 31 saves for the shutout while Michael Gudmanson stopped 24 shots in a losing cause, and his final Junior hockey game.

The Yorkton Terriers put the 2nd piece together to make the Highway 10 Super Series become a reality as Chase Norrish got his 2nd OT winner in as many games as the Terriers doubled up the Humboldt Broncos 2-1 to win their Best of 7 Semi-Finals in 5 games.

Brett Boehm got the lone other goal for the Terriers while Greg Moro chipped in with the Broncos lone goal.

Kale Thomson with another solid effort in goal stopping 29 shots for the win.


So the Melville Millionaires and Yorkton Terriers in the Highway 10 Super Series, tentative start on Friday night.

Yorkton UCT Terriers begin Western Canadian Bantam Championships today in Kelowna

 

 

After capturing the Saskatchewan Bantam AA Hockey league championships with a 2 game to None series vicotry over the Northeast Wolfpack, the Yorkton UCT Terriers have now advanced to the 2014 Western Canadian Bantam AAA Hockey Championships that begins today (Thurs) in Kelowna BC.

There are 5 teams taking part, the Terriers, the host Kelowna Rockets, BC reps the North Shore Winter Club, the Alberta Champion Lloydminster Heat and the Winnipeg Monarchs from Manitoba.

THE 2014 TELUS CUP WESTERN REGIONALS AAA MIDGET CHAMPIONSHIP WILL BEGIN TONIGHT (Thurs) AT THE ART HAUSER CENTER IN PRINCE ALBERT.

ONE OF THE TEAMS INVOLVED IS THE SASK MIDGET AAA HOCKEY LEAGUE CHAMPION NOTRE DAME ARGOS, WHICH FEATURES ARGOS GOALTENDER AND YORKTON PRODUCT MATT KUSTRA AND LANGENBURG PRODUCT EVAN WERLE.
