Local teams taking part in SHSAA Provincial Volleyball Championships this weekend!

Some Saskatchewan High School Provincial Volleyball Championships will be held today (Fri) and tomorrow (Sun) across the province, with some local teams taking part.

In 5A Boys championship in Prince Albert, Yorkton Regional will play their first game at 1PM vs. Saskatoon Holy Cross.

1A Girls championship in Fox Valley/Maple Creek.

North Valley - 1st game at 1PM vs. Luseland


2A Girls Championship in Medstead/Spiritwood


Rocanville - 1st game at 12 Noon vs. Langham


Raymore- 1st game at 1PM vs. Kerrobert


Ituna- First game at 2PM vs. Rocanville


Kelvington- 1st game at 12 Noon vs. Wilkie



3A Girls Championship in Carrot River

Wynyard- 1st game at 12 Noon vs. Macklin

Yorkton Rawtec Maulers make Coaching Change

After just 2 wins in their first 24 games, the Yorkton Rawtec Maulers (SMAAAHL) have made some changes to their coaching staff.

The board of directors of hockey club have announced they've relieved Head Coach/GM Kevin Rawlick and Associate Coach Jason Gordon of their duties.

Assistant Coach Dalane Lamb will take as Interim Head Coach.

"As a board, we just felt like we are needed to go in a different direction, and part of that direction involved some coaching changes and staff changes, and we would like to thank Kevin & Jason for everything they've done for the organization", Mauler President Greg Donnelly said in a phone interview this morning (Fri)

Rawlick was in his 2nd full season as Head Coach/GM after he took over on an interim basis during the 2016/17 season.

Donnelly also adds that the board of directors & others will come together to move forward in search of their new Head Coach, General Manager and Director of Player Personnel, but there is no timetable right now to fill those positions on a full time basis.

The club currently sits with a 2-18-0-4 record through 24 games in their Saskatchewan Midget AAA hockey league season and their next game will be on Saturday night when they host the Saskatoon Contacts at the Farrell Agencies Arena.

Stamps; Mils both win on Wednesday night

MJHL 

The Swan Valley Stampeders won their 2nd straight overall and 4th straight against Neepawa defeating the Neepawa Natives 9-3 on Wednesday night.

In the 1st, Josh Maucieri would get the Stamps on the board as he would beat goaltender Kolby Thornton over the right shoulder with a nice wrist shot for his 8th goal of the season to give his team a 1-0 lead just 4:47 into the game. Swan would add to their lead just under 7 minutes later as Brian Harris would sneak a nice pass from down-low to Alex Uryga in front who would slip it through the five-hole of Thornton for his 2nd marker in as many nights to give them a 2 goal lead. But just 1:11 later, Neepawa would answer back as Michael Boutoussov would catch the Stamps flat-footed in their own zone and sneak in his 3rd to make it one goal game at 2-1 after 20 minutes.

Neepawa would pull even at 2-2 just 92 seconds into the middle frame as Corbin Mariash would would grab a loose puck and beat Michael Davis for his 2nd of the year. But the Stampeders would quickly respond with a couple beauty goals from Brad Goethals, his 8th and 9th of the seasons to regain the Stamps' two goal lead at 4-2. Tanner McKechnie would add a second PP goal in the late stages of the period banging home a rebound to make it 5-2 Swan Valley after 2 periods.

The Stamps would make it 6-2 just 1:13 into the 3rd as Jaden Townsend would capitalize on a shorthanded chance for his 4th on the campaign. Just 37 seconds later though, Jesse Gibbons would make it a 3 goal game once again with another PP goal to make it 6-3. The Stamps would add 3 more goals late for some insurance off the sticks of Carter Cockburn, Josh Maucieri and Matt Osadick to help them to the 6 goal win.

Michael Davis made 27 saves in the Swan net to earn his 10th victory of the season while Neepawa net minder Kolby Thornton turned aside 39 shots in the loss.

The Stamps' next games will be this weekend on Saturday and Sunday both in Steinbach against the defending champion Pistons.

The Melville Millionaires pulled into a 3rd place tie in the Viterra division with Weyburn after a 3-1 victory over the Red Wings on Wednesday on home ice.

Cory Schillo led the way for the Mils with 1G 1A including the GWG while John Elliot and Luke Nkwama had the others.

Berk Berkeliev (pictured above) made 27 saves on 28 shots to earn the win in goal.

The Mils will look for back to back victories on Friday night when they visit the Estevan Bruins for another Viterra division showdown. GX94 will broadcast the game with Yorkton Dodge Junior Hockey, "Sask Milk"  pregame show starts at 7:20 pp begins at 7:30 from Affinity Place.

Antoniadis' 2 goals leads Terriers to road win in Wilcox on Tuesday

The Yorkton Terriers snapped their 2 game losing streak on Tuesday night as they defeated the Notre Dame Hounds 4-3 in the shootout in Wilcox.

The Terriers would strike first on the road just 1:45 into the 1st as Dino Antoniadis (pictured above) took a nice chip pass from Cole Keenleyside and worked his way into the Hounds' zone and snap home his 2nd of the year over the right pad of Andrew Henderson to give the Terriers an early 1-0 lead. The score would stay like that until Nolan Renwick would find a soft spot in the slot and beat Ben Laidlaw five-hole for his 7th of the year to tie it up at 1-1 after 20 minutes.

The two teams would once again exchange goals in the 2nd period. First off just 3:54 into the middle frame, Charles Martin's long point shot would beat screened Laidlaw for his 6th of the season to give the home-side their first lead at 2-1. But the Terriers would be able to respond as Branden Klatt's long slap shot would re-direct off a Hound in front for his 12th to make it 2-2 after 2 periods.

In the 3rd, just 35 seconds in it wold be Jaret Penner pouncing on a loose puck to give his team the lead once again at 3-2. But once again the Terriers would find a way to even it up as with just 34 seconds left, Dino Antoniadis would re-direct home a long point shot to make it 3-3 and force a overtime period.

In the overtime, both teams would have some glorious chance. First off, Casey McDonald who was brought up from the Moose Jaw Generals (SMAAAHL) was awarded a penalty shot but was denied by the blocker of Henderson. Then later on, Marshall Wilton found Nolan Renwick back door wide open but he was turned aside by an unreal stop by Ben Laidlaw.

In the shootout Aiden Bulych and Casey McDonald would score only the goals and Laidlaw stopped both Hounds' shooters to help his team earn the extra point.

Ben Laidlaw made 30 saves on 34 shots to earn his 7th win of the season while Hounds goalie Andrew Henderson made 27 saves in the loss.

The Terriers' next game will be a neutral site game on Saturday night in Canora against the Estevan Bruins at 7:30 while the Hounds go right back at it on Wednesday when they visit the Bruins.

Melville Prairie Fire will be dropped from SFMAAAHL as league moves to 7 teams for 2019/20 season

The Saskatchewan Hockey Association has undertaken an initiative over the past 3 years to grow female hockey in the province and with that comes the announcement of their new "Female Development Model", which was finalized this past weekend

One big change sees the Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League moving from 8 to 7 teams ahead of the start of the 2019/20 hockey season, which means the Melville Prairie Fire AAA program will be moved from Midget AAA to down to a 11-team, Midget AA league. 

The Prairie Fire in Melville have been part of the SFMAAAHL since the league's inaugural year in 2006.

The team will finish out their 2018/19 season and then returning eligible players for next year will have the choice of where they will play for the 2019/20 season. 

The Prairie Fire currently sit in a tie for 4th place in the standings with a 4-4 record with their next game being on Tuesday Nov. 20th when they visit the Notre Dame Hounds.

Wolverines acquire F Krauter from Weyburn

The Waywayseecappo Wolverines are thrilled to announce the acquisition of 18-year-old Forward Bryce Krauter from the Weyburn Redwings.

Krauter, a 6-foot, 175-pound forward from Winnipeg spent last season in the MMHL with the Interlake Lightning where he scored 7 goals and 40 assists in 41 regular season games.

He also was an assistant captain on the Lightning, before making the jump to Junior ‘A’ in September.

“Bryce is a very skilled young forward, he’s familiar with our league and has great playmaking abilities,” Wolverines Head Coach and General Manager, Taylor Harnett explained. “

He’s a player that we targeted and are very fortunate to have acquired him.” “I spoke to him on the phone and he’s excited that he is now a Wolverine.”

Krauter will join the Wolverines in the midst of a seven-day break between games and will see his first action as a Wolverine on Sunday when Waywayseecappo hosts Portage.

The deal with Weyburn completes the Future Considerations agreement from a trade late last week that sent Drew Anderson to Weyburn.
