Mils sweep weekend series over Weyburn with 5-3 win on Sunday night

The Melville Millionaires won their 2nd straight game and swept a weekend home and home series with the Weyburn Red Wings with a 5-3 victory on Sunday night at the HCUC.

The Mils would open the scoring in the 1st period as Reed Murray would get a powerplay goal his 10th of the season to give the Mils a early 1-0 lead. It would stay like that until the 15:55 mark of the 1st period as Tyler Borstmayer who was in alone in front of Isaiah Plett would put it top shelf on the Mils net minder to even it up at 1-1. But just 1:17 later the Mils would regain their 1 goal lead as Connor Tudor would go top shelf on Jack Burgart for his 2nd goal of the season to give the Mils a 2-1 lead. But it would be the Red Wings getting the last laugh of the 1st period as it would be Shain Scheschuk intercepting an errant Mils pass to get a short handed marker to even it up at 2-2 after 1 period.

In the 2nd period it would be a back and forth period, but as the period went on it would be the Mils having most of the control as they had great opportunities but couldn't beat the Red Wings goaltender and the 2nd period would go scoreless and it would sit at 2-2 after 40 minutes of play.

In the 3rd period, it would be the Mils getting the early powerplay and they would convert as Kelvin Walz (pictured above)  would get his 14th of the season to give the home team once again a 3-2 lead. Just 3:34 later the Mils would get their first 2 goal lead as Tyson Predinchuk would bang it home for his team leading 18th goal of the season to make it 4-2. But the Red Wings would make it interesting with 11:18 remaining as Jacob Jeske would beat Isaiah Plett to cut the Mils lead to 4-3. But Kelvin Walz would get the insurance marker his 2nd of the night and 15th of the season to give the Mils a 5-3 victory.

Isaiah Plett stopped 26 of 29 shots for the win while Jack Burgart stopped 33 shots in a losing cause.

The Mils 2nd ranked powerplay was 3-6 on the evening. Their next action will be on Wednesday night when they visit the Humboldt Broncos. Pregame show 7:20, pxp at 7:30 on GX94 from the Elgar Peterson Arena in Humboldt.
