The Yorkton Cardinals took first blood in the first Highway 10 battle of the 2014 WMBL season as they held on to beat the Melville Millionaires 6-5 at Pirie Field last night.
Cameron Duncan led the way for the Cards with a 3 for 5 night at the plate, all singles and also chipped with a RBI. Former Regina Red Sox Austin Drummonds and 2nd baseman Nick Gotta also had a couple hits for the Cards.
The Mils top 4 hitters in their batting order in Garrett Dodd, Tyler Enns, Nick Walker, and Logan Terwilliger each had 2 hits for Melville in a losing cause.
Jeff Pool would get the start for the Cards and go 4 innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits, walked 4 and struck out 2 but got the no decision. Big Righty Elliot King would get the win in relief for Yorkton. Blake Evetts started on the hill for the Mils and would be tagged with the loss allowing 4 runs on 7 hits over 4 innings walking 2 and striking out 5.
The Cardinals will return to action this afternoon when they travel to battle the Saskatoon Yellow Jackets at 2:05, the Mils are also on the road as they travel for a night game in Moose Jaw against the Miller Express.

YORKTON TERRIERS ARE 2014 RBC CUP NATIONAL JUNIOR A CHAMPIONS
In a first period early on that you expected a few nerves and excitement as both teams were looking to try and capture their first national title in team history , and you did get just that as early on the teams were not as crisp and just weren't as sharp as they were early on in the tournament. But as you got about 5 minutes into the game, you saw that the teams got back to the right groove. The Canadians would be the team that would draw first blood as Anthony McVeigh like he did in the round robin match-up would get the opening goal snapping home his 4th of the tournament to give them an early 1-0 lead. But the Terriers would come back and get the equalizer at the 15:07 mark of the opening frame as the red hot Daylan Gatzke would deflect home a Chase Norrish point shot for his 3rd of the tournament to tie this championship game at 1-1 after 20 minutes of play.
It wouldn't take the Carleton Place Canadians long to regain that 1 goal lead early in the 3rd when Stephen Baylis would finish off a 2 on 1 sneaking one through Kale Thomson for his 2nd of the RBC Cup to regain the CP Canadians 2-1 lead. Before the 2nd period buzzer could go, the Terriers would go down 3-1 as Andy Sturtz on a nice individual effort back handed it through the Thomson. The Carleton Place would go into the 2nd intermission with a 3-1 lead.
In the 3rd the Terriers would come out with desperation and the results wouldn't come out until 17:12 into the 3rd when Tanner Lischynsky would bang home his 3rd of the tournament to cut it to a 3-2 Caandians lead. Then just 8 seconds later, Dylan Johnson would bang it five-hole to tie things up at 3-3 headed to OT.
In the extra period, the Terriers would control much of the overtime, and get a powerplay where they would not be able to convert. But just 4:01 into the extra frame, for the 2nd time in this tournament Derek Falloon would be the hero as he would bang home the winner to give the Terriers 4-3 win and crown them National Champions for the very first time.
Kale Thomson stopped 32 shots for the win while Guillaume Therrien turned aside 42 Terrier shots in a losing cause.

Terriers reach 2nd ever National Final with Semi-Final win over Vernon
The Yorkton Terriers for the 2nd time in 8 years will play for a national title as they advanced to tomorrow's (Sun) RBC title game with a 6-3 win over the host Vernon Vipers on Sautrday afternoon.
This semi-final matchup would start off with very good pace, with both teams having some good opportunities and early powerplays to try and get that elusive first goal. That team to get that first goal would be the Terriers as on their 2nd powerplay, Tanner Lischynsky would take a nice feed in front and go top shelf on Austin Smith for his 2nd of tournament to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead. The Terriers wouldn't take long to take a 2 goal lead as just 46 seconds later Daylan Gatzke would snap home his 1st of the RBC Cup to give the Terrier a 2 goal advantage. But before the opening frame would end, the Vipers would add a powerplay goal of their own as Brett Mulcahy would deflect home a point shot from Jared Wilson past Kale Thomson for his 3rd to cut the Terriers lead to just 2-1 Terriers after 20 minutes of play.
The Vipers wouldn't take long in the 2nd period to get the equalizer as Michael McNicholas would sneak backdoor and take a nice cross ice feed from Dexter Dancs to jam home his 2nd goal of the tourney to pull it to a 2-2 tie. The Terriers though wouldn't back down and they would come right back and regain their 2 goal lead with a couple markers off the sticks of Dylan Johnson and Chase Norrish to make it a 4-2 Yorkton lead. But just like the 1st, the Vipers would cut their deficit to just one before the 2nd period buzzer would go as Dexter Dancs would jam home his 2nd of the the tourney to make it a 4-3 Terrier lead through 2 periods.
In the 3rd in desperation playing for their season would come out firing on Kale Thomson but in the end they would come up a little bit short in their efforts. The Terriers would add two more into the empty net by Tayler Thompson and Daylan Gatzke to give the Terriers a 6-3 Semi-Final win.
Kale Thomson made 34 saves for his 3rd straight win while Austin Smith made 4 saves on 8 shots before he was yanked and relieved by Danny Todosychuk who made all 22 saves in his performance.
The Terriers will now meet the Carleton Place Canadians In tomorrow's Title game after the East reps beat the Dauphin Kings 5-3 in the other semi final. Pregame at 515, pxp at 5:30 SK time with Yorkton Dodge Junior Playoff Hockey on GX94.

Falloon plays hero as Terriers clinch Semi-Final berth with win over the Kings
The Yorkton Terriers faced elimination twice in the RBC Cup and both times the Terriers prevailed, which included a big 2-1 OT win over the Dauphin Kings to clinch a berth into Saturday's semi-finals
It would be a little bit of slower start to the 1st period for both sides until we got about half way through the first frame as Terriers' forward Matt Cox would have a couple opportunities but couldn't beat Kings' netminder Michael Stilliadis who was very solid in that 1st period. The Terriers would also get penalized a couple times in the 1st period but the penalty kill that has been getting better as the tournament was very solid in a scoreless opening frame where Dauphin led in the shot column at 11-9.
A Kings powerplay would carry over into the start of the 2nd period and just 46 seconds in, Dauphin would capitalize as Brent Wold would deflect home his 3rd of the RBC Cup to give the Kings a 1-0 lead. The Terriers would get a total of 3 powerplays as the middle frame continued and would have some glorious opportunities as Chase Norrish was creeping in back door and was robbed in front and then Tyson Enzie was fed right in the slot area for the one-timer and his shot went off the post and out to keep it at a 1-0 advantage for the Kings after 2 periods of play.
In the 3rd period, the Terriers would really come on looking for that equalizer and for the opening 5 minutes but he couldn't get it. Then Dillion McCombie went in alone with Kale Thomson just after a flurry of Terrier chances but Thomson made a unbelievable save. Then at the 8:10 mark of the 3rd, Tyler Giebel would send a no look back hand through some traffic that Stilliadis didn't see as it would go five-hole on the Kings' netminder for his 1st of the tournament to tie it up a 1-1. The teams would once again exchange chances in the late stages of the 3rd period, but both teams would come up empty in the process sending the game into sudden death OT.
In the extra period, Turner Ottenbreit would send a puck deep where Brett Boehm would take over behind the net and dish it out in front where Derek Falloon (pictured above) would jam it throught the Kings netminder for his 1st goal of the RBC Cup to give the Terriers a 2-1 OT victory.
Kale Thomson put together his 2nd very good start in a row as he stopped 35 shots for his 2nd straight W while Michael Stilliadis turned aside 31 Terrier shots in a losing cause.
The Yorkton Terriers will take on the Vernon Vipers on Saturday afternoon in the first Semi-Final, 2:45/3:00 SK time on GX94 while Dauphin Kings will battle the Carleton Place Canadians at 7:00 SK time in the late Semi-Final.

Terriers stay alive at RBC with win over Carleton Place
The Yorkton Terriers will live to see another day at the 2014 RBC Cup in Vernon, BC as they got their first victory of the championship with a 3-1 win over the Carleton Place Canadians.
The Terriers started off with a very solid start to the opening frame, as they would have some glorious chances with a couple coming off the stick of Brady Norrish but the Terriers weren't able to break through and get any past Canadians netminder Guillaume Therien who stopped all 16 shots he faced in the opening period. Carleton Place were able to get the early advantage though as with a man short the Canadians would go in shorthanded and Stephen Baylis would slide it across to Anthony McVeigh who went top shelf on Kale Thomson for his 1st of the RBC Cup to give the East Reps a 1-0 lead through 20 minutes of play.
In the 2nd period, the Terriers would continue with their solid play and they would rewarded for their efforts as Brett Boehm would get a nice backhand feed from Riley Hunt to put home his 2nd of the RBC Cup to even it up at 1-1. Yorkton would get their first lead of the night at the 13:50 mark of the middle frame as Tayler Thompson would find a loose puck and flip it over top of Therien for his 2nd goal of the tournament to give the Terriers a 2-1 lead after 2 periods.
It would be hold on mode for the Terriers in period 3 as they played their best period of defensive hockey in the tournament and then they would get that insurance marker as Chase Norrish would rifle home a one-timer bar down for his 1st goal of the RBC Cup, to push the Terriers to a 3-1 victory over the Carleton Place Canadians to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Kale Thomson (pictured above) rebounded and put together a very good start for the Terriers make 25 saves on 26 shots for his 1st win of the tourney while Guillaume Therrien was solid in a losing cause stopping 34 Terrier shots.
The Terriers will be in must win territory once again as they wrap up their round robin tomorrow afternoon (Thurs) against the 3-0 Dauphin Kings, 2:45/3:00 SK time on GX94 with Yorkton Dodge Junior Hockey on GX94. The Canadians finish round robin with a 2-2 record and will now wait to see their seeding for this weekend's playoffs.

Terriers' comeback falls short as they drop decision to Vernon
After getting down 5-0 early on the Yorkton Terriers scored 4 unanswered goals but that's as close as they would get as they dropped to 0-2 at the 2014 RBC Cup in Vernon, BC with a 6-4 loss to the hometown Vipers.
It was a very quick, physical start to the opening frame for both sides as both teams had great opportunities especially for Brett Boehm who had a tremendous in front where he walked into the slot area but put the shot just over top of the cage. The Vipers would be able to break through as Colton Sparrow would start the rush from back in his own zone and he had Kale Thomson going one way and he would put it the other way just over top his right hand pad for his 2nd goal of the tournament to give the hometown Vipers a 1-0 lead through 20 minutes with shots even at 13-13.
It would be a 2nd period to forget for the Yorkton Terriers as they would give up 4 goals in the 1st 3:48 of the middle frame as Brett Mulcahy, Colton Sparrow, Michael McNicholas and Liam Coughlin would get the markers for the Vipers to give them a commanding 5-0 lead. The Terriers would get one before the 2nd period buzzer would go as Brett Boehm would sneak one through Austin Smith for his 1st of the tournament to make it a 5-1 Vipers lead through 2 periods of play. Shots clock at a Terrier advantage at 28-27.
The Terriers in desperation mode to start the 3rd period would begin their long road back as Dylan Johnson would bang home his 1st goal of the tournament to make it a 5-2 Vernon lead. Then just under 5 minutes later the Terriers would cut the deficit to just 2 as Tanner Lischynsky would put it five-hole on Austin Smith for his 1st to make it 5-3. Things would get even more interesting with just 9:28 mark of the 3rd as Tyson Enzie would snap one top shelf for his 1st of the RBC Cup to cut the Terriers to within one at 5-4. But that's as close as they would get as Colton Sparrow would ice it into the empty net in the final minute to complete the hat trick to make it a 6-4 Vipers win over the Terriers.
Austin Smith faced a lot of rubber, in the game stopping 40 of 44 shots for his 1st win of the tournament while Kale Thomson stopped 13 of 18 shots for the Terriers before he was relieved by Riley Medves who stopped all 15 shots he faced.
The Terriers will have Tuesday off, and their next game will be on Wednesday when they battle the Carleton Place Canadians, 2:45/3:00 SK time on GX94 while the 1-1 Vernon Vipers will take on the 2-0 Dauphin Kings on Tuesday night . The other game on Tuesday in the afternoon has the Carleton Place Canadians taking on the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots.

Terriers fall in RBC Cup opener 5-1 to Toronto
The Yorkton Terriers started their fifth appearance at the Royal Bank Cup on the wrong foot as they fell in disappointing fashion to the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots by a score of 5-1.
Despite the outcome, It was a pleasant start the Terriers wanted to begin their RBC Cup as they opened the scoring just 1:18 into the 1st, when Tayler Thompson would jump onto a loose puck and poke it into the empty net for his 1st of the tournament to give the Terrier an early 1-0 lead. But just 22 seconds later the Patriots would get the equalizer as Michael Prapavessis would go top shelf on Kale Thomson for his 1st of the RBC Cup to tie it up at 1-1. Then just 4 minutes later, Toronto would get their first lead of the afternoon as Rory Bell would poke home a nice feed from Nick Ursitti to give the Patriots a 2-1 lead through 20 minutes of play, with the Terriers leading the shot advantage at 5-4.
After a slower start to the middle frame for both side, the Patriots would make it a 3-1 advantage with a powerplay goal as Andreas Tsogkas would put it five-hole on the Terriers netminder for his 1st of the tournament. The Patriots would add another one before the 2nd period would end and it would be Ryall Ledyard deflecting home a Prapavessis point shot to the back of the net to give the Central reps a 4-1 advantage over the Yorkton Terriers through 2 periods with a 19-13 Patriots advantage in the shot column.
In a hockey game where the Terriers couldn't get much going, they showed spurts where they tried to provide that much needed offence but in the end they couldn't beat the Patriots netminder. Toronto would add one more in the 3rd period for good measure as Kevin Shier would notch home his 1st of the tournament on the powerplay to give the Central reps a 5-1 victory over the Yorkton Terriers.
Evan Buitenhuis stopped 22 shots in goal for the win while Kale Thomson made 27 saves in a losing cause.
The Terriers will go right back at it on tomorrow night (Mon) and try to improve to 1-1 on the championship when they take on the host Vernon Vipers who are also 0-1, 7:45/8:00pm SK time on GX94 with Yorkton Dodge Junior Hockey while the Patriots will have Monday off before battling the Carleton Place Canadians on Tuesday afternoon.
