The Melville Millionaires got off to an early 1-0 lead but thats the only lead of the night they would get as they dropped Game 1 on home ice, 4-2 to the visiting Nipawin Hawks.
The Mils would be the team that would get on the board first as Mark Zvonkovic would lead a 2 on 1 and elect to shoot and he would be Joe O'Brien short side to give the Mils an early 1-0 lead. But just 1:18 later, Kris Spriggs would go top shelf glove side over Trevor Martin for his 1st of the post season to tie things up at 1-1. Then late in the opening frame, Spriggs would add his 2nd of the period right off the face off and slip it some how through the Mils goaltender to make it a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes.
In the 2nd it would be all Hawks as they would out shoot the Mils 9-2 in the middle frame but both teams wouldn't be able to hit the back of the net, to keep it a 2-1 after 2 periods.
It wouldn't take the visitors long to add to their lead as Carter Coben would score a similar one to the Hawks' first goal going top shelf for his 1st, to make it a 3-1 lead. The Mils would make it interesting with just 3:23 to go as Mitch Lipon would sneak one home to get the Mils to within 1 at 3-2. But it would be Evan Migneault icing it into the empty net in the final minute to give the Hawks a 4-2 opening game victory over the Mils.
Joe O'Brien wasn't too busy on the night but did stop 16 shots for the win, while Trevor Martin made 28 saves in the loss.
