Wayway completes sweep to win 1st playoff series ever, with a 5-3 Game 2 win in Dauphin.
The Wayway Wolverines made history on Saturday night as they won their first playoff series in franchise history as they swept the Dauphin Kings in 2 straight in their MJHL Survivor Series, with a 5-3 victory in Dauphin
The Wolverines after a couple slow shifts to start the game they really picked up and took the early control of the game and they would be credited for their effort as Johl Swedlo would send an innocent shot from the side boards that made its way through Troy Martyniuk for his 1st of the playoffs to make it a 1-0 lead. Then it would be the Kings that would take control and it would lead to their equalizing goal as Rylan Freed would sneak through the Wolverine D and his initial shot would be stopped but he would hammer home the rebound to even things up at 1-1 after 20 minutes. Shots on goal 12-11 for Dauphin.
Both teams have a lot of chances in the opening stages of the 2nd period, but both goalies played solid to keep it a 1-1 hockey game. The Wolverines would break the tie though at the 15:09 mark of the 2nd as from a very tight angle would snipe home his 2nd of the playoffs to regain the Wayway lead at 2-1. Then just 1:45 later, Brock Paddock would make it a 2 goal lead as he would drive hard to the Kings' net and jam home his 1st playoff goal to make it 3-1. But before the 2nd period buzzer, the Kings' would receive a 5 on 3 man advantage and they would able to convert as Ben Hull's long point shot would go through some traffic and beat Mitch Wiebe for his 2nd, to make it a 3-2 Wolverine lead after 40 minutes. Shots after 2 periods, was 30-25 for the Kings.
The Kings had a man advantage to start the final frame and they would once again score on it as Captain Cody Nelson would gobble up on a loose puck and jam it in for his 1st goal of the playoffs to tie things up at 3-3. Then at the 7:44 mark of the 3rd, the longest serving Wolverine would take a nice feed back door from Dylan Gedjos and notch his 1st which was the eventual game winner to make it 4-3. The Kings wouldn't die as they would keep coming and they would continue to be denied by Mitch Wiebe. Neil Woolfrey would ice it in the empty net in the final minute to conclude the scoring and make it a 5-3 Wolverine victory.
1st Star Mitch Wiebe (pictured above) was like he has been all season, sensational stopped 39 shots for the victory while Troy Martynuik made 24 saves in a losing cause.
Wolverines will now take on the league leading Portage Terriers in the MJHL Quarter-finals, which will begin either Wednesday or Thursday in Portage for Game 1.
