Terriers double up Mustangs in Sunday afternoon Clash at the WCC
(from SJHL.ca)
The 2015 Western Canada Cup is turning into a goal scorer's paradise. Through two games on Opening Saturday 18 goals had been scored, and Sunday's afternoon affair between the MJHL and SJHL Champs fell right in line.
After dropping their tournament opener 3-1 to the host Fort McMurray Oil Barons, the Portage Terriers came out flying and jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one.
The line of Jordyn Boyd, Tyler Jeanson and Dane Schioler combined for 6 points in the opening period as the Terriers fired 17 shots on goal in the opening period.
The Mustangs found themselves in penalty trouble to start the 2nd and Shawn Bowles made the Mustangs pay, notching his 1st of the WCC to give the Dogs a 3-0 lead.
Melfort would get their first tournament goal nearly 10 minutes later as Nick Hermary tapped home his 1st on a great feed from Cole Hyrsky.
As quickly as the Mustangs gained momentum, the Terriers took it away. Andrew Zerban walked into the zone off the ensuing faceoff and restored the three goal lead just 11 seconds later.
Melfort would come out flying in the 3rd period and got a pair of goals from Cole Hyrsky and Justin Boyer to cut the lead to 4-3. A furious late effort by the Mustangs couldn't harvest any fruit and Portage added an insurance marker and an empty netter to seal the deal and bring their record back to even ground at 1-1.
The Mustangs fall to 0-1 on the tournament and will now face the 0-1 Spruce Grove Saints (AJHL) tonight (Mon)
Game time is 7:30.
The MJHL champion Terriers on the other hand, their next action will be tomorrow afternoon taking on the Penticton Vees.

The Portage Terriers capped their historic season Tuesday night in Steinbach, winning the Turnbull Trophy with a nail-biting 4-3 win over Steinbach Pistons. Terriers’ ran the table in the playoffs going 12-0, winning the Turnbull Trophy in four straight.
“It’s always a good thing to be the last team standing at the end,” Terriers’ Head Coach Blake Spiller told CFRY-Radio. “I’m really proud of my team. We have a great group of guys on this team. To go undefeated in the playoffs is great. I’m really happy for the guys on our team.
“The last few minutes were a bit nerve wracking for everyone involved. But we did what we had to do to win; just like all season. Good for our guys.”
Terriers’ netminder Justin Laforest was thrilled with the championship. Not to mention, going 12-0 in the playoffs.
“This is amazing,” said Laforest. “No greater feeling in the world than right now. Our team is just fantastic. We came out strong in the game, but we knew Steinbach was going to battle. But, we weren’t going to lose this one.”
Terriers’ forward Dane Schioler was named the playoff MVP. The Winnipeg native was thrilled as he carried the Turnbull Trophy around the ice with his teammates.
“This is very special,” said Schioler, 18. “I owe this to my teammates. We were a bit nervous (coming into the game)…but we knew what we had to do. It was a tough game.”
The Terriers, who are hosting the RBC Cup next month, have now won six MJHL championships in 11 seasons: 2005, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2015.
Playing in front of 1,200 thrilled fans at the TG Smith Centre, Terriers held period leads of 2-0 and 3-1. Pistons rallied in the third, pulling to within one goal – 4-3 – but the Terriers successfully snuffed the comeback.
Terriers received goals from the Bowles brothers, Brad and Shawn, Tyler Jeanson and Carson Perreaux. Pistons received goals from Denis Bosc, Tyler Penner and Dustin Loeppky.
“Our team came out hard,” said Shawn Bowles. “We all wanted to end it tonight. We just stuck together. We all know our roles and we come out every night and battle hard. It’s awesome to win this championship. A real highlight in my career.”
Terriers’ captain Tanner Jago summed up the championship: “This championship is unbelievable. We knew it was going to be a grind in the playoffs, but hats off to the fellas. This rink is really tough to play in. Credit to the Pistons.”

Jim Nill, general manager of Canada’s National Men’s Team, announced Tuesday that Todd McLellan (Melville, Sask./San Jose, NHL) will be Canada’s head coach at the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, scheduled for May 1-17, 2015 in Prague and Ostrava, Czech Republic.
Peter DeBoer (Dunnville, Ont.), Bill Peters (Three Hills, Alta./Carolina, NHL) and Jay Woodcroft (Toronto, Ont./San Jose, NHL) will join McLellan behind the bench as assistant coaches.
“This is a coaching staff with extensive experience in the NHL and knowledge of the international game, as well,” said Nill. “As a management group we are excited to work with this staff, and look forward to building a roster and representing Canada in the Czech Republic next month.”
Nill is working with a management group comprised of George McPhee (Guelph, Ont.), Sean Burke (Windsor, Ont./Phoenix, NHL), Pat Verbeek (Sarnia, Ont./Tampa Bay, NHL), Claude Loiselle (Ottawa, Ont.) and Scott Salmond (Creston, B.C.), Hockey Canada’s vice-president of hockey operations and national teams.
Todd McLellan (pictured above), 47, just finished his seventh season as head coach of the NHL’s San Jose Sharks. He has led the Sharks to three division championships and the President’s Trophy in 2008-09, and is the winningest coach in franchise history. Previously, McLellan spent three seasons as an assistant coach with the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings, winning the Stanley Cup in 2008, and won the Calder Cup as head coach of the AHL’s Houston Aeros in 2003. He also spent six seasons as head coach and general manager of the WHL’s Swift Current Broncos from 1994-2000; McLellan was named WHL executive of the year in 1996-97, and WHL coach of the year in 1999-2000. He has one previous experience with Team Canada, winning a bronze medal as an assistant coach with Canada’s National Junior Team at the 2000 IIHF World Junior Championship. McLellan was drafted by the New York Islanders in the fifth round of the 1986 NHL Entry Draft, and played five NHL games with the Islanders during the 1987-88 season.
Canada’s roster will be comprised of players not involved in the NHL playoffs. Canada can also add players eliminated during the Stanley Cup playoffs, and can register up to 25 players, including three goaltenders, on its official roster.
Canada opens the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship against Latvia on May 1. It will also face Austria, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Sweden and Switzerland in preliminary round play.

Former Millionaire Trapp & ND Hounds prepare for SJHL Canalta Cup Final that begins Friday in Melfort
For the first time in 27 years, the Notre Dame Hounds are headed back to the SJHL's Canalta Cup Finals. The Hounds advanced by defeating the Kindersley Klippers in overtime on Sunday night to capture that Semi-Final Series in 6 games.
The Hounds will now battle the Melfort Mustangs in the SJHL Final that'll begin on Friday night at the Northern Lights Palace.
The 30 year old Trapp scored 50 goals, 93 assists for 143 points in 154 career SJHL games with the Melville Millionaires and Estevan Bruins.
He then went on to score 56 goals & 96 assists for 155 points in 4 years with Sacred Heart University (NCAA Division 1)
I had a chance to catch up with former Melville Millionaires and Balcarres product Bear Trapp (pictured above) who is the Asst. Coach for the Hounds to preview the championship series.

Weekend Thoughts
First off all, Happy Easter to all of you and for all you Ukrainians out there you get to do it all again this weekend as well (Double the paska and babka, can't go wrong with that.)
**The season for the Yorkton UCT Terriers ended on a disappointing note losing to to the Winnipeg Warriors in the Bronze Medal Game at the Western Canadian Bantam Hockey championships in Winnipeg , but they have nothing to hang their heads about. The Terriers were able to capture their 2nd straight league and provincial title in dominating fashion. Expect a handful or more players from this squad to have their name called out very early when the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft is here on May 7th. Job well done Head Coch Graham Garett and the Terriers team.
**It wasn't the color of medal they wanted but congratulations to local product Jessica Campbell and her Team Canada teammates who captured the silver medal at the 2015 World Women's Hockey championships in Malmo, Sweden. The canadian girls lost to their longtime rivals the Americans in the final Saturday 7-5. It was the first big step for Campbell as she played her first World championship with the Senior program and she didn't look out of place. I'm proud of my good friend and former teammate on her success so far in her hockey career, still plenty of time for the 22 year old with the Canadian Senior Women's program.
**The SJHL's Canalta Cup Finals are now set as two of the best and most talented teams the whole year will do battle as the Notre Dame Hounds take on the Melfort Mustangs. The Mustangs have been one of the leagues elite all season long led by the Minion line of Travis Mayan, Tristan Frei and Justin Boyer will have been sensational all season long along with former Melville Richard Palmer who has been superb for them between the pipes. The Mustangs won the battle of the North East and advanced after defeating the Nipawin Hawks in 5 games, with 3 of those going to the overtime period.
Meanwhile the Notre Dame Hounds will be making their appearance in the Canalta Cup final since 1988 (Former NHLer Curtis Joseph was the goalie on that team). The Hounds have been very consistent all season long and have fallen under the radar a little bit, but they backed their play up by beating 2 very good teams, the Flin Flon Bombers in 7 games and now most recently last night defeating the Kindersley Klippers in 6 games after Spencer Trapp got his 2nd of the game in OT. Boy is Trapp a player, he has come a long from being a little guy I saw running around at hockey games when we were little when our older brothers played together back in Melville. Speaking of the Balcarres product and former Melville Millionaire Bear Trapp, he is of course the Assistant Coach of the Jr. A Hounds and him alongside Clint Mylymok have done a tremendous job with that Hounds squad.
Also the Klippers loss last night ended off the very solid Junior career of Regina's Dylan Baer. Baer was acquired earlier in the year to Klippers I have been able to see this kid grow over the years mostly spent with the Yorkton Terriers where he captured a couple league titles and a RBC Cup National Title. So congrats to Baersy on the career and best of luck going forward.
So now that the final is set, it should be a dandy so if you have the chance to check it out, please do so and I'm saying this could be a very homer series, meaning the home team would probably be successful, so its going to go 7 games. Goaltending is going to be HUGE. The Series starts Friday in Melfort.
**Speaking of Junior A hockey, the MJHL Turnbull Cup Final begins Wednesday in Portage, as the top 2 teams in the standings will do battle as the Terriers will take on the Steinbach Pistons. This might be a closer series than most people think as the 2015 RBC Cup host Terriers have shown despite their great success this year that they can struggle a bit on a smaller ice like the Pistons have. Local flavor in the final has a couple of former Swan Valley Stampeder teammates Colin Baudry (Steinbach) up against Landon Peel (Portage). Also one time Millionaire Brodie Buhler is the on the Steinbach squad. I'll take Portage in 6 games.
**The Regina Pat Canadians are headed to the Telus Cup National Championships after defeating the Pembina Valley Hawks 7-1 in the Gold Medal Game yesterday (Sun). They will begin the tournament on April 20th in Quebec.
**The final week of the NHL season is upon us and it could be a very entertaining and exciting final week, and I got only one thing to say and thats Go Canucks Go!!
** It's opening day for the Toronto Blue Jays as they battle the New York Yankees. The question mark is still out there if the Jays can be a playoff contender this season, well their offence looks strong and they will score a lot of the runs but is their pitching going to be good enough? I think the Jays will be in consideration to be one the Wild Card teams in the American League.
**Its also Master's Week for Golf as the first major of the 2015 season will go this week. All eyes are on Tiger Woods who makes his return to the course, I don't think Tiger will have any magic in his first week back. I got Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson as my picks with Webb Simpson being my dark horse.
**and finally the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship game goes tonight as Wisconsin battles Duke. I'll take Coach K and the Blue Devils this evening.
