Local products help Baseball Sask 15U selects capture "Ray Carter Cup" Bronze

Team Saskatchewan was able to grab a medal a the 2017 Baseball Canada "Ray Carter Cup" in Summerside, PEI.

Saskatchewan won Bronze in the 15U National championship after a 8-4 win over Team Ontario last night (Sun).

Sask lost a nail-biter in the Semi-Finals, 11-9 to Quebec earlier in the day.

Balcarres' Josh Cleggett got the win in the Bronze-medal game, going 3 innings allowing 2 runs on 2 hits while striking out 5.

Cleggett along with Goodeve's Ryan Rathgeber were members of Team Saskatchewan while a pair of Melville product in Chris Sastaunik and Brett Walchuk were apart of the Saskatchewan coaching staff.

Millionaires (SJHL) welcome Waldbauer as new Asst.Coach

                                        

The Melville Millionaires are pleased to announce the hiring of Jarett Waldbauer.  Jarett will work alongside Head Coach/GM Devin Windle and Assistant Coach Mark Chase.

Jarett, a Mils alumni and local product spent the past season as an assistant coach with the Melville Bantam AA team and has coached with the Pewee AA and Midget AA programs in the past as well.

 Waldbauer also works full time as an exercise physiologist.

Waldbauer had this to say about joining the Mils coaching staff, "I'm very excited to join the current coaching staff as they move the program in a new direction.  I've had a passion for the game since I was young and to be able to coach the Jr team in my home town that I once played for is a honor."

"We couldn't be more thrilled to add a coach like Jarett to our staff.  He is dedicated to improving our hockey club as well as our coaching staff and himself everyday.  We look forward to this new chapter behind the bench as we continue to revamp the program," said Head Coach/GM Devin Windle

Team Sask U15 Selects win Ray Carter Cup opener in Summerside, PEI

 

It was a great start for Team Saskatchewan at the 2017 "Ray Carter Cup" 15U National Championships in Summerside, PEI.

Saskatchewan won their tournament opener on Thursday afternoon blanking Team Manitoba 5-0.

Kyle Froehlich, Kael Flynn and Goodeve's Ryan Rathgeber combined to throw a 1-hit shutout.

Rathgeber went 2 1/3 innings allowing 1 hit on 1 walk while striking out 5 batters.

Josh Cleggett of Balcarres caught for Team Sask and also went 2 for 2 at the plate with 2 singles in the win.

Saskatchewan will have a couple games on Friday. At 6AM SK time vs. Nova Scotia and 12:30PM SK time vs. Team Alberta.

Melville products Chris Sastaunik and Brett Walchuk are members of the Saskatchewan coaching staff.

Yorkton Terriers Coaches Show- Aug 22nd (presented by Merit Ford in Esterhazy)

In this first edition of the "Merit Ford (Esterhazy)" Yorkton Terriers Coaches Show, Head Coach/GM Casey O'Brien discusses his teams off-season, couple trades they made this past week and their Texas Scramble golf tournament that take place next Thursday (Aug 31).

Local teams making moves

Since I was away on holidays some of our local teams have been making some moves ahead of their training camps in just under couple weeks.

The Yorkton Terriers traded local products 18 year olds Carson and McKenzie Welke to the Camrose Kodiaks (AJHL) in exchange for 19 year old F Slater Strong and a player development fee.

Carson had 25 goals, 36 assists for 61 points in 103 career games with the Terriers while brother McKenzie had 31 goals, 37 assists for 68 points in 108 games in a Terrier uniform.

Meanwhile Strong, who hails from Calgary AB had 3 goals 6 assists for 9 points in 34 games with the Kodiaks this season.

The Terriers then used the player development fee acquired from the Kodiaks and sent it to the Calgart Canucks (AJHL) for 18 year old forward Dalton Ossman.

The Calgary AB product in his 2nd season with the Canucks last season had 7 goals, 11 assists for 18 points in 41 games.

The Melville Millionaires dealt 20 year old D Tyson Slater to the Alberni Valley Bulldogs (BCHL) for 19 year old F Ethan Kopyczyn and 18 year old defenceman Jake Wilhelm.

Slater was acquired by the Mils from Trail in the Brandon Wells trade earlier this summer. 

Kopyczyn played last year with the AJHL's Calgary Mustangs and in 56 games had 8 goals, 13 assists for 21 points. 

Meanwhile, Wilhelm (Victoria BC) was pointless in 34 games last season with the Bulldogs. 

The Mils also announced that forwards Jackson Nauss & Aaron Aragon and defenceman Jake Sutton will be playing south of the border and will not be returning this season 

The Swan Valley Stampeders have made a couple moves dealing 19 year old D Dane Bumstead to the English River Miners (SIJHL) and acquiring 20 year old F Tanner Garnham from the Fort Frances Lakers (SIJHL). 

Bumstead, a Winnipeg product was pointless in 30 games with the Stamps last season while Garnham (Portage La Prairie, MB) had 9 points in 46 games with the Lakers. 

Churcbridge pair capture 2017 SK Women's Rosebowl Golf Championships

Kim Boreen and Debbie Dirven, Golf SK Public Player members from Churchbridge put a solid round to be crowned the 2017 SK Women's Rosebowl Champions at the Harbor GC & Resort. The team got off to a hot start making net birdies and two net hole-in-one with one bogey on front nine for a 27 (-8).  They followed up their solid start with a net 33 (-2) on the back.  The duo's round of net 60 (-10) was enough to win the championship by 4 over last years champions Linda Sokul and Cheryl Lawrence, from the Wynyard GC.  

In the championship speech, they both stated the win was for Golf SK Past President Moe Martin (and 2017 Rules Official at the event) who encouraged the women to try the Rosebowl Championship almost 12 years ago.  As this is the second time the pair have won the championship, they dedicated the win to Moe.

In the bronze medal position there were 3 teams vying for the coveted bronze medal postion. In a two hole, sudden victory playoff, the team of Donna McNaughton and Beryl Robinsonbettered the play of Pat Pratt and Carol Walsh and the team of Toni Norton and Marlene Bennett to take home third place.
