Local products among those named to Team Canada for Spengler Cup

                                               


Hockey Canada is unveiling its roster for next week's Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland.

The 25-player list is headlined by David Desharnais and Daniel Winnik, who represented Canada at the Beijing Olympics.


Virden's Wyatt Kalynuk and Josh Brook of Roblin, Manitoba are also included on the Canadian team, who open up on Boxing Day against HC Sparta Prague.


Canada won the Spengler Cup in 2019 when the tournament was last played.

Friday Night MJHL/SJHL Recap

 MJHL

For the third time this season the Swan Valley Stampeders dropped an overtime decision to the Dauphin Kings. 

Jakob Brook tied the game for the Kings with 3.7 seconds left then Mason Smith sniped home the OT winner on the powerplay to lead the home-side to a 4-3 victory over the Stampeders.

J. Brook also opened the scoring the for the Kings early in the 2nd, while Myles Yearwood also scored.

Noah Wilson, Collin Jennings and Owen Harris (1st MJHL goal) replied for the Stampeders' who got 58 saves from Kobe Grant in the OT loss.

Kings G Cole Sheffield made 38 stops to get the win

The Stamps wrap up the 2022 portion of the regular season on Saturday night hosting the OCN Blizzard while the Kings are also in action on Saturday hosting the Waywayseecappo Wolverines.

SJHL

The Melville Millionaires had a 2-0 lead on goals by Issac Supping and Sam Schofield after 40 minutes of play but the top-ranked Battlefords North Stars stormed back for a 3-2 overtime win.

Holden Doell and Jake Southgate scored third period goals to tie things up before Zane Florence netted the OT winner.

Josh Kotai made 38 saves for his league-leading 19th win of the season while Clement Labillois made 19 saves on 20 shots in the Mils net before he had to leave the game early in the 3rd. 

AP Luke Brunen allowed 2 goals on 13 shots in relief and took the loss.

The Millionaires are on their Christmas break and will return to action on Jan. 6th visiting the Yorkton Terriers while the North Stars wrap up their roadie in Yorkton on Saturday night.

Terriers drop wild affair on home ice to league-leading North Stars

The Yorkton Terriers surrendered six third period goals as they fell 9-6 on home ice on Thursday night to the league-leading Battlefords North Stars. 

Kian Bell led the way for Battlefords scoring a hat-trick while Colby Bear, Jackson Allan, Holden Doell, Tanner Gold, Riley Girod, and Steven Kesslering also scored. 

Greg Nelson replied with a couple goals for the Terriers who got singles from Tyson Perkins, Clay Sleeva, Pavel McKenzie, and Logan Cyca had singles. 

Justin Maric made 36 saves on 42 shots to earn the win for Battlefords, while Caleb Allen allowed 9 goals on 44 North Stars shots. 

The two teams will meet once again on Saturday, but before that the North Stars take on the Melville Millionaires on Friday night at 7:00PM from the HCUC. 

Millionaires drop their final road game of 2022 in Melfort on Wednesday

 The Melville Millionaires dropped their final regular season road game of 2022 on Wednesday night, 9-1 to the Melfort Mustangs.

The Mustangs got off to a quick start with three power play goals off the sticks of Dawson Leroux (2) and Kevin Minnoch to give them a 3-0 lead.

Yorkton Mauler AP Luc Fortier added another for the Mustangs late in the period to make it a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes.

The Millionaires got on the board just over 2 minutes into the 2nd period as Zach Cain on the PP, tapped in a rebound for his team-leading 14th of the season to cut their deficit within three. 

But before the 2nd period buzzer went off, the Mustangs responded with a couple more from David Rioux & a short-handed from Tye Evans to make it 6-1 through 2 periods.

The Mustangs added three more in 3rd from Wyatt Day, Clarke Huxley and Hayden Tuba to wrap up the scoring.

James Venne made 34 saves on 35 shots to earn the victory in the Melfort goal, while Clement Labillois got the start for the Mils and allowed 4 goals on 14 shots before being relieved by AP Luke Brunen who made 18 saves on 23 shots.

The Millionaires wrap up their pre-holiday break schedule on Friday night on home ice against the league-leading Battlefords North Stars. 

Cyca helps lead Terriers to home ice win over division-leading Bruins on Tuesday

 

The Yorkton Terriers are now winners of 4 straight on home ice after a 4-3 victory over the Estevan Bruins on Tuesday night. 

Owen Barrow opened the scoring early just over 2 minutes into the first to help the Bruins lead by one after 1 period. 

In the 2nd, the Terriers' were able to finally break-through offensively as Clay Sleeva and Brett Butz were able to score just 2:08 apart to give Yorkton the 2-1 lead. 

But the Bruins would respond just 73 seconds later as Gabriel Filion's shot squeaked by Caleb Allen for his 2nd of the season to pull the visitors back even 2-2. 

The Terriers' regained the lead though with 5:19 left in the 2nd period as Terrier captain Logan Cyca (pictured above) forced himself on a breakaway after causing a turnover at his blue-line before going high glove on Cam Hrdlicka making 3-2 Yorkton through 40 minutes. 

JD Hall added to the Terrier lead exactly 5 minutes into the 3rd, but once again the Bruins came back as Barrow added his 2nd of the game to pull them within one but that's as close as they would get. 

Caleb Allen made 22 saves on 25 shots in the Yorkton net to earn his 12th win of the season, while Bruin G Cam Hrdlicka turned aside 41 shots in the loss. 

The Terriers' return to action on Thursday night hosting the league-leading Battlefords North Stars from the Westland Arena.

Stampeders; Millionaires both drop overtime decisions on Sunday Night

 STAMPEDERS 4, KINGS 5 (OT) 

The Swan Valley Stampeders had their 6 game win streak snapped on Sunday night after a 5-4 overtime loss on the road to the Dauphin Kings. 

Roblin's Jakob Brook had 2 goals and 1 assist for Kings, including scoring the game winner in the extra period. 

Aidan Brook, Carter Zalischuk and former Stampeder Jamie Valentino also scored for the Kings, who got a 21 save performance from Marko Belak in the win. 

Trey Sauder, Justin Keck, Steven Arp and Darius Makse replied for the Stampeders, who now have points in 7 straight games. 

Loic Mainguy-Crepault made his first start for the Stamps in over a month and turned aside 31 of 35 shots. 

The Stampeders and Kings will once again meet on Friday night in Dauphin at Credit Union Place.

The Melville Millionaires let a 3-0 first period lead evaporate after a falling 5-4 in overtime to the Estevan Bruins. 

Mitch Kohner scored with the 18 seconds left in OT to give the Viterra division leaders the extra point. 

Owen Barrow, Kade Runke, Evan Forrest and Ilya Chmelevski also scored for the Bruins, while Louis-Frederic Theberge. Issac Suppin, Cooper Chisholm and Carter McKay replied for the Moneymen. 

The Millionaires' return to action on the road on Wednesday in Melfort against the Mustangs, in a game you can hear on GX94.  

Jones' is OT hero again as Stampeders win 6th straight, 2-1 over visiting Virden

The Swan Valley Stampeders captured their 6th straight win on Friday night, a 2-1 overtime decision over the Virden Oil Capitals. 

The Oil Caps got the only goal of the opening frame as Layton Veitch finished off a tic-tac-toe play in front and snapped in his 1st of the season at the 15:54 mark of the first to make it 1-0 for the visitors after 20 minutes.

Warren Marcotte tied it up for the Stampeders just 58 seconds into the 2nd period short-handed as off a good fore-check then Trey Sauder scooped it up and center it to Marcotte in the slot and the Calgary product made no mistake to make it 1-1 through 2 periods.

After a scoreless 3rd period, overtime was needed and with just 10 seconds left in extra-time, Jakob Jones (pictured above) was able to jam home his 2nd straight game winner to earn the Stamps the 2nd point.

Stamps' G Kobe Grant earned his 12th win of the season making 20 saves on 21 shots, while Eric Reid in the Oil Caps' net turned aside 36 shots.

The Stamps' return to action on Sunday afternoon visiting the Dauphin Kings at Credit Union Place. GX94 will broadcast the game, starting with the pregame at 3:50PM and the play by play kicking off 3:00PM.

In the SJHL,

The Yorkton Terriers started their weekend road-trip up north with a 3-1 loss to the Flin Flon Bombers at the Whitney Forum.

Jeremi Tremblay, Cole Dupperrault and Matt Egan paced the offense for the Bombers, while Terrier captain Logan Cyca replied for the Terriers who got 35 saves from Caleb Allen in the loss.

Kenneth Marquart earned his 5th win of the season making 33 saves. 

The Terriers travel to La Ronge to battle the Ice Wolves on Saturday night.

Meanwhile in Melville, the Millionaires got a goal from Aidan Robson but dropped a 4-1 home matchup with the Humboldt Broncos.

Alec Saretzky, Matthew Van Blaircom, Cage Newans and Spencer Bell scored for the Broncos, who got 26 saves from Ben Motew in the victory.

Clement Labilliois had a 30 save performance for the Mils in the loss.

The Millionaires are back at it on Sunday night at 6:00 PM hosting the Estevan Bruins.
