Mils fall in shootout in Reg. Season Finale; Terriers Clinch Pennant; Stamps also win on Friday night

The Melville Millionaires got a point in their regular season finale but lost 3-2 in the shootout to the Notre Dame Hounds

It wasn't the start the Mils would start in their final regular season game as just 19 seconds into the hockey game, the Hounds would get on the board as Dillion Schwartzenberger would get his 13th goal of the season to give Notre Dame an early 1-0 lead. It would stay like that until the 9 minute mark of the first frame as the Hounds would increase their lead to 2 when Corey Anderson would slip it five hole on Isaiah Plett for his 16th goal of the season to give the visitors a 2-0 lead after 1 period of play.

The Mils would seem like they would find their legs in the 2nd, as they would come out firing with a couple great opportunities and they would get rewarded as Reed Murray would fire a snap shot that snuck through Alexi Thibaudeau for his 13th goal to give the Mils some life and cut their deficit to just 1 goal at 2-1 after 40 minutes.

In the 3rd period it would start like the 1st as the Hounds would come out and control much of the start of the period in the Mils' zone, but weren't able to convert. It would stay tied until halfway through the 3rd period when Ashton Clark would let a shot go from his off wing and it would be Thibedeau for his 5th goal of the season to tie it up at 2-2. Then just a few minutes later, Kelvin Walz would use his good speed and split the Hounds dman and go in on a breakaway but a shot that the fans thought initially went in, somehow did not and it stayed even after regulation and also after overtime.

In the shootout, Tuesday's shootout hero for the Mils Alec Brandrup would go first but was denied and then Sam Aulie would be the first Notre Dame shooter to go and he would beat Plett with the wrist shot to give them the early lead in the shootout. But the Mils next shooter Kelvin Walz would go forehand, backhand top shelf on the Hounds goalie to even the shootout at 1-1. The next couple of shooters would miss and then it would be Spencer Trapp's chance to end it and he would to give the Hounds the 3-2 shootout win over the Mils.

The Mils will now end the season with 74 points, and will need the North Stars to not win in regulation for them to get home ice in the 1st round of the playoffs, if they don't win the Mils play the Stars with home ice. If the Stars win in regulation, and the Klippers get a point the Mils will play the Klippers without home ice. So easily put if Stars play Mils, (Mils have home ice), if Mils play Klippers (Kindersley has home ice).

==================
Also in the SJHL,

The Yorkton Terriers before they even won their overtime game, clinched the league pennant with their 1 point, but then Brett Boehm got the overtime in the final minute to lead the Terriers over the Bombers 2-1.

Daylan Gatzke had the other Yorkton goal while Kale Thomson stopped 29 of 30 shots in the win.

The Terriers will continue their 2 game road trip and wrap up their regular season visiting the Humboldt Broncos on Saturday night.

=========
While in the MJHL in a Sherwood Division Semi-Final preview, the Swan Valley Stampeders defeated the Virden Oil Capitals 5-4 in the shootout.

Dylan Favell got the shootout winner, while Bo Sigurdson got 2 goals for the Stamps in regulation. Also chipping in with markers were Dylan Hykawy and Brayden McDonald. Graham Hunt turned aside 18 shots for the win.
The Stamps will finish off the regular season with a home date with the Dauphin Kings on Saturday night.

Mils prevail in Shootout over Estevan on Tuesday night; Mils Coaches Show (Feb 26th)

(Alec Brandrup)

The Melville Millionaires had a 3-0 lead early in the 2nd then lost it but were able to hold on for a 4-3 shootout win over the Estevan Bruins on Tuesday night.

In a back and forth first period it will be the Millionaires getting the lone goal of the period as Landon Farrell would take a nice feed in front and some how get it past Matt Gibney for his 17th goal of the season to make it a 1-0 Mils lead after 1 period.

In the 2nd period the Mils would get off to a hot start as Colin Mospanchuk would notch home his 20th goal of the season to give the home team a 2-0 lead with a nice snapshot that beat Gibney high. They would make it 3-0 just 13 seconds later as Allen Kilback's backhander beat Gibney for his 16th to make it a 3 goal Mils lead. But then the Bruins would get a little bit of life with a few chances and they would convert with 2 goals of their own as Austin Daae and Corey Kosloski would get markers past Isaiah Plett to make it a 1 goal 3-2 Mils after 40 minutes.

The third period would bring once again a back a forth affair, all the wat until just under 5 minutes to go when Lyndon Pastachak would get the equalizer as his wrist shot from the top of circles would beat Plett for the 8th marker for the former Yorkton Harvest star to make it a 3-3 hockey game after regulation.

The Mils would come out flying in OT early on similar to what they did in the 2nd, and would get a couple of chances but couldn't convert. Moments later, former Millionaire Michael Sagen would get sprung in alone with Plett and he would get a chance but in the process would also get hooked up sending Alec Brandrup to the box and let Bruins go to work on a 4 on 3 PP. But  the Mils pk which was so good all night would be able to kill it off and the game would stay even going into the shootout.

In the shootout the first 4 shooters (2 from each side) would miss, then it was Mils dman Alec Brandrups (pictured above)  turn and he would beat Gibney with a nice wrister making it a must make for Austin Rosselin but he was denied by the poke check of Plett to give the Mils the 4-3 extra time win.

Isaiah Plett turned aside 36 shots for the win while Matt Gibney stopped 33 in the shootout loss.

The Mils now moved ahead of the Battlefords North Stars for 4th in the SJhL Standings and will finish off their regular season on Friday when they host the Notre Dame Hounds, 7:20/7:30 on GX94 while the Estevan Bruins will finish off their season with a home and home with the Estevan Bruins this weekend, they are 3 points back now of the 6th place Humboldt Broncos.

Stamps fall in the shootout in Wayway

The Swan Valley Stampeders who were playing without about 5 regulars still managed to get a point as they fell 2-1 in the shootout to the Wayway Wolverines.

The Stamps would open the scoring fairly early on as Colton Brausen slip one through the five-hole of Mitch Wiebe for his 5th goal of the season to make it an early 1-0 lead for the Stamps after 1 period of play.

In the 2nd it would be all Wolverines as they controlled much of the plays, out shooting the Stamps 19-4 and also outscoring the Stamps as Robert Briem would get the lone goal his team leading 19th goal of the season to tie it up at 1-1 after 40 minutes.

The Stampeders and Wolverines would play a more even 3rd perod as the shots were 12-12, but did both teams have chances to try and get that equalizer but both goalies stood tall, and that would force overtime which solved nothing.

In the shootout, the first 2 Stamps' shooters would miss and the first Wolverine shooter would miss until Robert Briem would score low blocker past Holowenko. Then it would come to Braydon McDonald who tried to go forehand, backhand but was denied to lead the Wolverines to a 2-1 victory.

Mitch Wiebe turned aside 27 shots for the Wolverines, while Cole Holowenko put together his 2nd straight quality start stopping 44 shots in net for the shootout loss.

The Stamps will wait a week until their next action a home match up against the Virden Oil Capitals while the Wayway Wolverines will go right back at it on Saturday night hosting the OCN Blizzard in their final home game of the regular season.

Terriers hold on to defeat Weyburn on Thursday night.

The Yorkton Terriers got their 33rd win of the season and split the season series with the Weyburn Red Wings by defeating the Wings 6-4 on Thursday night in front of just under 1400 people at the FAA.
The first period would start on the right foot for the Terriers as they would get the first goal 2:13 into the period as Daylan Gatzke would deflect home his 9th of the season by Rylan Parenteau on a nice low shot from Tanner Lischynsky (pictured above) to give the home team a early 1-0 lead. But that lead wouldn't last long as the Red Wings would get the equalizer just 1:27 later as Matt Eng would bang home his 9th goal to even the game at 1 apiece. It would stay even until the 15:27 mark of the opening frame as kind of off a broken play and then Brian Farkas would feed Josh Lees with a breakaway and he went forehand, backhand on Kale Thomson for his 12th of the year to give the visitors a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes.

The Weyburn Red Wings would increase their lead to 2 goals early in the 2nd period as Tyler Borstmayer's shot from the point would beat Thomson for his 6th goal of the season to make it 3-1 Wings. The Wings would continue to put pressure on the Terriers, but then the Terriers get a powerplay and they would convert on the 2nd powerplay chance as Tayler Thompson would finish off a nice passing play for his 20th goal of the season to cut the deficit to just 3-2. Then a short time later, it would be a crazy one as Chase Norrish would let a long shot from the point go and the bouncing puck would somehow trickle over top of Parenteau for Chase's 9th of the season to even it up at 3-3 after 40 minutes of play.

Brett Boehm would put the Terriers ahead just 2:30 into the 3rd period as he would get his 26th goal of the season to make it 4-3 Yorkton. But the Wings would come right back with another powerplay goal (their 3rd of the night), as Colton Laroque's long shot from the point beat a screened Thomson for his 3rd to pull it even at 4-4. Just 3:42 later, it would be Boehm add it again as he would finish off a nice passing play and slide home his 2nd of the night and 27th of the season to put the Terriers back in front at 5-4. The Terriers would add some insurance as Tyler Giebel would get in on the scoring with his 13th to push the Terriers lead to 2 goals. The Wings would come hard in the final half of the final frame and they would get a lengthy powerplay but couldn't convert and it would end with a 6-4 Terriers win, their 30th of the season.

Kale Thomson turned aside 21 shots for the win while Rylan Parenteau stopped 34 shots in a losing cause.

The Terriers are now 2 points clear of the Kindersley Klippers for top spot in the SJHL , and the Terriers next action is Saturday night when they host the Nipawin Hawks at the FAA 7:30.

Mils' 2 game win streak snapped as they fall at home to the Bruins

The Melville Millionaires had their 2 game winning streak snapped on Tuesday night as they dropped a 3-2 decision to the visiting Estevan Bruins.

In the 1st period, the play would go back and forth with both teams having some very good chances, but it would be the Estevan Bruins drawing first blood as it would be the SJHL's leading scorer Austin Daae getting his 29th goal of the season to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead over the Mils after 1 period of play. Shots on goal 8-7 in favor of the Mils.

The Estevan Bruins would increase their lead to 2 goals just 3:11 into the middle feed, as Connor McKenzie would just mop up a loose puck in front and get it past goaltender Isaiah Plett for his 1st SJHL goal to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead. But then from then the Mils would take control of the middle frame as they would pepper the Bruins, and finally get rewarded for their efforts as on the PP, Simon Genereux, the reigning SJHL Dman of the Week would finish off a nice feed and put it past Matt Gibeny for his 3rd goal of the season to cut the Bruins lead in half at 2-1. Before the end of the 2nd period, the Bruins would regain their 2 goal lead as the Mils would turn it over just at the Bruins blueline and Lyndon Pastachak would lead an odd man rush and slip it over the right pad of Isaiah Plett for his 6th goal of the season to give Estevan a 2 goal, 3-1 lead after 40 minutes.

The Mils would start off with some fight in the 3rd period like any team would be trying to come from behind, but would either get turned away by Gibney, or the Bruins who did a great job of turning aside shots in their own zone, would block a Mils shots. But the Mils would get even some more life with just 3:02 remaining as the reigning SJHL Player of the Week, Allen Kilback would get his 6th goal in as many games and 15th of the season to move the Mils within 1 but that's as close as they would get as they fell 3-2 to the visiting Bruins.

Matt Gibney turned as 25 Melville shots for the victory while Isaiah Plett had 18 saves in a losing cause.

The Mils will look to start a new streak on Friday night when they host the Nipawin Hawks at 7:30 from the HCUC.

=====================
In the MJHL,

In what could be a Sherwood Semi-Final matchup in the MJHL, the Swan Valley Stampeders on the road went into Virden and beat the Oil Capitals 4-3 on Tuesday night.

Max Flanagan, Carter Johnson, Brayden McDonald and Max Provencher scored for the Stamps while Curtis Oliver, Ben Williams and Lucas Oliver replied for the Oil Caps.

Cole Holowenko turned aside 41 shots he faced in goal for the Stamps for the win.

The Stamps will look to make it 2 in a row on Friday when they visit the Wayway Wolverines. GX94 will broadcast the game with Yorkton Dodge Junior Hockey, pregame 7:20, pxp at 7:30 from the Wayway Arena Complex.

Terriers' 7 game win streak snapped as they lose 4-1 to Humboldt

The Yorkton Terriers had their 7 game win snapped on Tuesday night as they fell 4-1 at home to the Humboldt Broncos at the FAA.

The game would start off with a bang as just 4 seconds in as David Stumborg and Daylan Gatzke would square off in a spirited scrap. That might have sparked the Broncos as they would open up the scoring just 12:14 into the 1st period as David Miazga would get the marker his 12th goal of the season to give the Broncos 1-0 lead after 1 period of play.

In the 2nd period, the teams would go back and forth with teams exchanging chances but both goaltenders Cade Spencer and Kale Thomson shut the door and kept the game at 1-0 Humboldt after 40 minutes of play.

In the 3rd period, just 5:15 into it as Matt Audette would get the marker to increase the Broncos lead to 2-0. Just minutes later, Thomas Stanislavski would split the Terriers D with some speed and put it top shelf on Thomson for his 3rd of the season to move it to 3-0. But the Terriers would provide some life and get on the board just 1:39 later as Tayler Thompson would deflect home his 17th goal of the season to move it to 3-1. Jarret Fontaine would ice it though into the empty net in the final 2 minutes to make it a 4-1 Bronco final.

Cade Spencer was solid for the Broncos in goal stopping 34 shots while Kale Thomson turned aside 25 shots in a losing cause.

The Terriers still remain in top spot in the Viterra division and SJHL and will try and get back on the win track as they start a 2 game road trip on Friday in La Ronge before visiting the Melfort Mustangs on Saturday night.

------------------------

Terriers win their 6th straight, 3-1 over Melville

The Yorkton Terriers won their 6th straight game and pulled even with the Melville Millionaires for top spot in the Viterra division with a 3-1 victory over the Mils on Friday night.

It would be the Mils opening the scoring the 1st period as Cole Berreth would finish off a nice passing play started by Landon Farrell for his 3rd goal of the season to make it an early 1-0 Mils lead. The rest of the period though would be controlled by the Terriers as they had all kinds of chances but Isaiah Plett shut the door to give Melville a 1-0 lead after 1 period.

In the 2nd period, the play would even out more, and then the Terriers would get the equalizer as Tyler Giebel would finish off a beauty passing of their own for his 12th to make 1-1. Then just 7:55 later, the Terriers would get their first lead of the night when Kailum Gervais would make a nice move around Adam Koopman and slip it five-hole on Isaiah Plett for his 9th to give the Terriers a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.

In the 3rd period, the Mils down a goal would definitely provide lots of pressure trying to get that equalizer, but just couldn't get anything past Kale Thomson. Chase Norrish would ice it into the empty net in the final minute to give the Terriers a 3-1 win, their 30th of the season.

Kale Thomson stopped 30 shots for his 25th win of the season while Isaiah Plett stopped 28 shots in a losing cause.

The rematch, and the 8th and final installment of the Highway 10 battle in the regular season will go on Saturday at the FAA 7:30 puck drop.
