Wolverines drop SO decision to top ranked Portage; Terriers win on home ice over Hounds

The Wayway Wolverines came close to snapping the lengthy Portage win streak, but eventually fell on home ice 4-3 in the shootout to the Terriers on Tuesday Night.

In the first, the only offence would come from Waywayseecappo as Landyn Cochrane would knock home a powerplay goal his 5th of the season to give Wayway a 1-0 lead after 1 period. Shots were 8-5 Portage after 20 minutes.

The Terriers would add a couple in the 2nd as MJHL MVP Brad Bowles would snipe home his league  leading 45th of the season to even things up at 1-1. They would then add one in the final minute with 22 seconds left as Braydon MacDonald would get his 15th of the year to give the defending National Champs a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes. Shots after 2 were 15-14 POR. 

The Wolverines would even things up in the opening minute of the 3rd, as Quinton Cubbon would hammer home his 5th of the year to make it 2-2. Then just a couple minutes later, the puck would come out and Dylan Tanner would go top shelf on Nathan Park for his 1st MJHL goal to regain the Wolverines a 3-2 lead. But the Terriers would make it 3-3 as Jeremy Leipsic would get his 8th of the season. 

Overtime would solve nothing and then in the shootout it would be Braydon McDonald & Adam Wowryk scoring the lone goals to give the Terriers their 20th straight win, a 4-3 decision in the shootout. 

Nathan Park made 23 saves for his 38th victory of the season while Greg Harney stopped 20 shots for the shootout loss.

The Wolverines' wrap up their regular season on Thursday hosting the Swan Valley Stampeders at 7:30.

Meanwhile both of our local teams were in action in SJHL on Wednesday

The Yorkton Terriers kept their shot for 9th place alive as they held on for a 5-4 win over the Notre Dame Hounds at the FAA. 

Terrier forward Carson Welke had 2G 1A to lead way while Corwin Stevely, Jordan McCausland and Kailum Gervais also scored goals. 

Jakub Severson made 36 saves to get win in goal for the Terriers.

The Terriers' next action will be on Friday night when they visit the Estevan Bruins.


In Estevan,

Dalton Menke and Clayton Eisler (1st SJHL goal) scored but the Melville Millionaires fell in defeat again this time 5-2 to the Estevan Bruins.

Mils' netminder Brandon Wells made 41 saves on 45 shots in the losing.

The Mils will play their season finale on Friday night hosting the Notre Dame Hounds at 7:30 from the Horizon Credit Union Center.
