Naccarato; Bentz earn SJHL Monthly Awards for December




IBAS SJHL DEFENSEMAN OF THE MONTH:  


LJ Naccarato, Yorkton Terriers



1997 D LJ Naccarato (Sturgeon County AB) came into his own during the month of December as the Terriers dealt with some injuries and absences from their line-up and it was Naccarato who stepped up to fill the void.  Naccarato scored 2-goals and 7-assists in 8-games during the month of December, which included a three-point effort on December 11th against Humboldt.  For the season, he has 2-goals and 13-assists in 37-games.  Runner-up:  Andrew McCann, Kindersley Klippers.






SJHL ROOKIE OF THE MONTH:  

Damian Bentz, Melville Millionaires



1998 F Damian Bentz (Punnichy SK) ended the month of December with a flurry, getting two Rookie Of The Week selections and riding that wave to the monthly honors as well.  Bentz had a four-point game against Weyburn before Christmas and finished with 4-goals and 6-assists in 8-games and has season totals of 9-goals and 11-assists in 25-games.  Runner-up:  Tucker Scantlebury, Melville.



Also of note: SJHL Player of the Month for December was Russell MB product Rylee Zimmer of the Flin Flon Bombers. 

Zimmer led all players in the month of December with 7-goals and 11-assists in 10-games played.

Mils win; Terriers lose on Wednesday Night SJHL Recap

The Yorkton Terriers lost their 2nd straight on the road in Melfort on Wednesday night, 8-3 to the Mustangs at the Northern Lights Palace.

The Mustangs would strike first 5:27 into the 1st period as Lucas Fraulin would bang home his 2nd of the season to make it 1-0. They would then add a couple on the power play, first up Tanner Zentner would take a feed far side and go top shelf on Matt Vernon for his 7th to make it 2-0. Then on the next PP, Reed Gunville would grab a loose puck and shove home his 8th of the year to make it a 3 goal Mustang lead. Melfort wouldn't be done there as kind of a scramble in front of the Terriers net and Matt Hermary would find it and put home his 2nd to make it 4-0. The Terriers would get one late with 7.2 seconds to go as Corwin Stevely would take a nice feed from the Dexter Robinson and go over the left shoulder of Derrick Hucul for his 8th to make it 4-1 Mustangs after 1 period with shots at 19-7 Melfort.

Matt Hermary would regain the Mustangs' 4 goal lead just 2:28 into the 2nd period as he would fire home his 2nd of the night and 3rd of the season to make it 5-1. But on the power play the Terriers would once again cut it within 3 as Dexter Robinson would bury home his 5th to make it a 5-2 game after 2 periods.

The two teams would exchange goals to start the 3rd period as Justin Ball (Mustangs) and Jared Legien (Terriers) would bury home goals for their respective side to make it 6-3. The Mustangs would add 2 more late off the sticks of Andrew Thompson and Reed Gunville to make it a 8-3 final.

Derrick Hucul made 32 saves for the Mustangs for his 2nd win of the season while Matt Vernon also made 32 stops in the losing cause.

The Terriers are back at it on Saturday night as they host the La Ronge Ice Wolves at 7:30 FAA.

Elsewhere in the SJHL,

Colby Entz made 31 saves for his 1st SJHL shutout as the Melville Millionaires blanked the Notre dame Hounds on Wednesday, 3-0 at the Horizon Credit Union Center.

Tucker Scantlebury, Keegan Milligan and Cory Schillo scored for the Moneymen.

The Mils also battle with the Ice Wolves this weekend on Friday night at 7:30 in the Rail City.

Yorkton's Kemp traded to Edmonton Oil Kings

Edmonton Oil Kings General Manager Randy Hansch announced today the team has acquired forwards Graham Millar and Brett Kemp in addition to a first-round pick in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft from the Everett Silvertips in exchange for defenceman Aaron Irving and a seventh-round pick in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft.
“We would like to thank Aaron for his time being here as an Oil King. It started day one with when we drafted him and since that day he has been a big part of our group and represented us well on and off the ice,” said General Manager Randy Hansch.
“We would also like to thank Aaron’s parent, Don and Lucy Irving for being part of our billet family and organization.”
Millar, who hails from Penticton, BC, is a 20-year-old winger who has accumulated 16 points (9G, 7A) in 25 games this season with the Silvertips. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Millar has appeared in 226 career WHL games with Everett and Saskatoon where he has collected 83 points (44G, 39A).
Kemp, a 16-year-old rookie, has 7 points (3G, 4A) in 17 games this season. The Yorkton, SK native was drafted by the Silvertips in the second round (41st overall) in 2015. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound centre also appeared in six games representing Team Canada at the U17 World Hockey Championship where they won the silver medal.
“Brett Kemp is a very promising 16-year-old and we’re excited to see his potential unfold in Edmonton. I have no doubt he will fit in well with our group and will be a part of our future moving forward. In also adding Graham, it was important to get some experience coming back and this allows him a fresh opportunity with us.”
Irving was leading the team in scoring with 43 points (14G, 29A) and is currently tied for second in points from a defenceman in the WHL.

Terriers' win streak snapped at 2 as they fall 5-0 in Nipawin

The Yorkton Terriers had their 2 game win streak snapped on Tuesday night, losing 5-0 on the road to the Nipawin Hawks at the Centennial.

After a scoreless 1st period, the Hawks get a couple of marker in the matter of the 1st 2:59 of the middle frame as first up just 2:03 in, Keegan Kjargaard would notch home his 13th goal of the season to make it 1-0. Then just 56 seconds later, Michael Grant would bang home his 11th to make it a 2-0 lead. It would stay like that until 2:09 to go in the 2nd as Nathan Hargave made the initial stop but then Josh McDougall would bang home the rebound for his 7th of the year to make it a 3 goal game for the home squad after 2 periods with shots being 24-12 Hawks.

The Terriers would have a little jump in the 3rd but enough to come back as the Hawks would add two more including Michael Grant's 2nd of the night while Grant Baetsen would wrap up the scoring with 9th of the season to give the Hawks a 5 goal win.

Declan Hobbs stopped all 17 shots he faced for the Hawks for his 2nd shutout of the season while in the loss Nathan Hargrave made 29 stops for the Terriers.

The Terriers now have lost 10 straight in Nipawin with their last win at the Cage back in October of 2010.

The Hawks won their 7th straight and 20th overall while the Terriers had their record drop 17-17-3 on the season.

In the MJHL,

The Swan Valley Stampeders got back on the win track as they doubled up the Virden Oil Capitals 6-3 on the road on Tuesday night.

Tanner Koroscil had 2 goals for the Stampeders while Brian Harris, Noah Basarab, Connor Navrot and Keaton Jameson also scored for the visitors.

Brett Evans made 44 saves to get the win in goal.

The Stamps are back at it on Friday night when they visit the Steinbach Pistons.

Elsewhere in Wayway,

The Wayway Wolverines gave up an early 3 goal lead and fell on home ice 6-5 to the Selkirk Steelers.

Cody Durdle had 1 goal, 2 assists for Wayway while Brendan Martin, Mack McPhee, Brandon Stanley and Trevor Kavanaugh also scored for the Wolverines.

Wayway is back at it on Tuesday Jan 10th when they host the Swan Valley Stampeders at 7:30

Hargrave's 26 save shutout leads Terriers to a 3-0 New Year's Day win over Melville


The Yorkton Terriers completed the sweep of the Highway 10 home & home series on Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 win over the Melville Millionaires in the Rail City.

The Terriers would get things going offensively just 6:40 into the 1st as Kaleb Bell would smack home his 4th goal of the season to give the visitors a 1-0 lead after 1 period with shots being 12-9 Yorkton.

In the 2nd, the Terriers would add to their lead very early into the middle frame as Quin Hobbs would score his 2nd goal in as many night as he would go back-hand shelf on Brandon Wells for his 3rd of the year to make it 2-0. Then almost half way through the 2nd period on the power play, Evan Werle would rifle home his 2nd to give Yorkton a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes with the Terriers leading the shot column 33-14.

The 3rd period would be a scoreless one but the period would also see 3 fights in totals between the two rivals.

Nathan Hargrave (pictured above) made 26 saves for the Terriers for his 3rd shutout of the season while Brandon Wells made 37 saves in the losing cause for the Mils.

The Terriers are back in action on Tuesday night when they visit the Nipawin Hawks. Pregame 7:20 pxp at 7:30 from the Cage with Yorkton Dodge Junior Hockey. The Terriers will also be in Melfort on Wednesday, a game you can also hear on GX94.

The Mils, meanwhile will be back on the ice on Wednesday night when they host the Notre Dame Hounds on Wednesday night at 7:30 from the Horizon Credit Union Center.
