Goethals' plays OT hero as Stampeders beat Portage in Game 2 of MJHL Final

The Swan Valley Stampeders have evened up their MJHL Final at 1 game apiece after a 6-5 overtime victory over the Portage Terriers on Sunday night.

The Stamps got off to a quick start in the first as they would grab the early lead as Brian Harris would tap-in his 2nd of the playoffs on the PP to make it 1-0. They would add to their lead with a couple late goals as first up with 2:14 to go, Josh Tripp would take a beauty feed from Kasyn Kruse from below the goal line and the MJHL MVP would make no mistake for his 10th of postseason to make it 2-0. Then just 19 seconds later, it would be John Jebamani getting on the scoresheet for the first time with a rocket that would beat Ethan Peterson to give his team a 3 goal lead after 1 period.

The visitors would come out in the middle frame with a big period as first off Joey Moffatt would deflect in his 5th of the playoffs to get Portage on the board to make it 3-1. Then just under 3 minutes later, it would Orca Wiesblatt sniping in his 2nd of the playoffs to make it a one goal game. But the Stamps would respond to make it a two goal game once again as a nice drive play from Alex Uryga and his wrap around would get past Ethan Peterson for his 4th of the playoffs to make it 4-2. But late in the 2nd period, the Terriers would get a late powerplay and they would capitalize as a one-time from Chase Brakel would beat Merek Pipes top-shelf over the left shoulder for make it 4-3 Stamps after 40 minutes.

In the 3rd, the Stamps would even it up as Chase Brakel would add his 2nd of the night to even it up at 4-4. Then just 5:37 later, the Terriers would grab their first lead as a big rebound would be jumped on by Ty Barnstable who made it 5-4. It would stay like that until the the 13:38 mark of the third as Brad Goethals (pictured above) would hammer home his 8th to make it 5-5 to force overtime.

In the extra period, Goethals would add his 2nd of the night just 1:31 in as his long point shot would beat a screened Peterson over the right shoulder to give the Stamps the win.

The two teams will now meet in Game 3 of their Best of 7 series on Wednesday night in Portage La Prairie. GX94 will broadcast the game with Yorkton Dodge Junior Hockey, pregame show begins at 7:20 with Play by Play kicking off at 7:30 from Stride Place.

Swan Valley fall in Game 1 of MJHL Final in Portage

The Swan Valley Stampeders dropped the opening game of the MJHL Turnbull Cup Final on Friday night, 3-0 to the Portage Terriers at Stride Place.

Despite having a pretty solid first period, the Stampeders would find themselves trailing 1-0 as getting the only goal was Terriers' F Joey Moffat whose one-timer snuck through Merek Pipes for his 4th of the playoffs to give the home team a one goal lead after 20 minutes.

After a scoreless 2nd period, in the third the Terriers would add some insurance late. First off just over 11 minutes in Ty Barnstable would tuck home a nice feed from Chase Brakel for his 3rd to make it 2-0 then Brakel would ice it into the empty net to give the Terriers the opening game win.

Ethan Peterson made 34 saves to earn his 1st shutout of the postseason while Merek Pipes turned aside 29 shots in the loss.

The two teams will meet in Game 2 of the Best of 7 Championship series on Sunday back in Swan River. GX94 will broadcast the game with Yorkton Dodge Junior Hockey, pregame show begins at 7:20 with Play by Play kicking off at 7:30.

Melville Millionaires (SJHL) sign Adams as Head Coach/GM

The Melville Millionaires proudly announces the signing of a two year contract with Kyle Adams as Head Coach and General Manager of the Melville Millionaires.    

Adams was hired as an Assistant Coach early in the 2018/19 hockey season, before being appointed interim Head Coach and General Manager in December. Kyle has made some great strides since his appointment in December and the Club is looking forward to what the 2019/2020 season has in store for Melville. 

 Adams career began in Ontario, where he grew up in a family that valued the sport of hockey and began to play at a young age.  Moving through minor hockey, Adams really began to dedicate his time to hockey and in pursuing a career in the sport. His skills, passion, and dedication earned him a spot on the Arizona Coyotes affiliate team in the UHL.

Although Adams was a successful player, he decided to turn his focus on coaching and began in 2005 as a Head Coach and General Manager in AAA.  Adams quickly transitioned into Junior A hockey in 2009 as a Head Coach and General Manager for the Drayton Valley Thunder Junior A Hockey Club in the Alberta Junior Hockey League.  His career than took him to Woodstock (Maritime Junior Hockey League), where he was Associate Head Coach and Assistant General Manager for the Club. In the three years of coaching there, he successfully earned season championships for all years and a silver medal at the Royal Bank Cup. From here Adams travelled West to coach as an Associate Coach and General Manager for the Chilliwack Chiefs Hockey Club (British Columbia Hockey League). He was once again successful, winning division championships every year, and partaking in league finals. Moving east once again, he returned to the Alberta Hockey League for a brief season before making his way to Melville.

“I am honoured to be part of a hockey organization that has the history that the Melville Millionaires does and am looking forward to being a part of such an historical franchise. I have been welcomed by the town with open arms and am excited to work with the Board of Directors as well as the fans into turning this organization into something even more special” said Adams.  

President Dwayne Kraft is pleased with the signing today and is looking forward to the new season. “As an Executive, we are excited to see the player commitments that have been occurring here off season and are looking forward to the team that Kyle will have on the ice come September. We look forward to working with him over the summer and seeing all the fans back in the rink come fall for what is expected to be an exciting season.”

Swan Valley & Portage get set to meet in 2019 MJHL Turnbull Cup Final that begins tonight!

Friday, April 5th, 2019  will be some history for the MJHL's Swan Valley Stampeders when they play their first game of a MJHL Turnbull Cup Final when they visit the Portage Terriers for Game 1 of their Best of 7 Championship series.

"It's exciting times for the community, you always strive to have the best team possible and seems like this year we've got the right people in place and Barry does a great job, and it's one of the best teams I've ever seen," said team governor and Stamps' alumni Cramer Coulthart.

After dispatching of the Dauphin Kings in 4 straight games in the Quarter-Finals, the Stamps then went on to dethrone the defending champion Steinbach Pistons in round 2 to advance on to the big dance for the very first time.

"The Pistons were a good challenge for us, they challenged us all series and lucky for us we came out on top," Stamps Head Coach/GM Barry Wolff said in a series preview interview.

Meanwhile for the Stamps' opponent in the final, the Portage Terriers they are in a very familiar place, competing 5th final in the last 8 years and the franchise is gunning for the 12th league title.

Wolff says his opposition, who they beat 4 times during the regular season,  will be a good challenge once again.

"They've had a lot of success over the years and this season and they score a lot of goals and lets hope our strong defensive play continues and we can keep their offence in check so we can be successful."

Terriers' season comes to an end after Game 4 loss to Battlefords in SJHL Semi-Finals

The Yorkton Terriers had their 2018/19 season come to an end on Wednesday night after falling 3-0 to the Battlefords North Stars in Game 4 of their SJHL Semi-Final series.

The North Stars for the 2nd straight night would get the opening goal as scramble in front of the Terriers net and the puck would scoot out for Quin Loon-Stewardson who make no mistake potting home his 6th of the playoffs to give the Battlefords at 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

After a scoreless 2nd period, the North Stars would add some insurance late to put the game out of reach off with goals from Brett Gammer and Ryan Gil to lead them to the sweep.

Joel Grzybowski earned his 3rd straight shutout in goal for the Stars making 31 saves for his 4th shutout of the postseason while Terriers' goalie Ryan Ouellette turned aside 32 of 35 shots in the loss.

With the Terriers' season coming to an end, it was also the end of the Junior career for 9 graduating Terriers in Brendan Mark, Jared Legien, Andrew Henderson, Colby Brandt, Cole Keenleyside, Quin Hobbs, Dino Antoniadis. Mason Mullaney and Branden Klatt. Congrats to those individuals on their Jr. careers and I wish them nothing but the best going forward

In the other SJHL Semi-Final,

TJ Irey and Cody Davis scored twice to lead the Estevan Bruins to a 4-2 win over the visiting Melfort Mustangs.

The series is now tied at 2-2 with Game 5 taking place back in Melfort on Friday.

Terriers drop Game 3 of SJHL Semi-Final to the Battlefords on Tuesday

The Battlefords North Stars have pushed Yorkton to the brink of elimination after blanking the Terriers for the 2nd straight game by a score of 1-0 in Game 3 of their SJHL Semi-Finals.

The visitors notch the only goal of Game 3 as Austin Becker would slide it across to left circle to Brett Gammer whose shot would sneak through short-side on Ryan Ouellette to give the North Stars 1-0 lead and thats all they would need to lead them to 3rd straight victory to start the series.

Joel Grzybowski captured his 2nd straight shutout making 30 saves in the win while Ryan Ouellette in the Terriers net turned aside 40 of 41 shots in the loss.

The North Stars now lead the Best of 7 series, 3-0 and the two teams will meet in Game 4 on Wednesday night. GX94 will broadcast the game with Yorkton Dodge Junior Playoff Hockey with the "Sask Milk" pregame show beginning at 7:20 and the PXP kicking off at 7:30.

Stamps' book ticket to MJHL Turnbull Cup Final after Game 6 win in Steinbach

For the first time in their 20 year history, the Swan Valley Stampeders will play in the MJHL Championship series after the Stamps defeated the Steinbach Pistons 5-3 in Game 6 to win their Semi-Final series, 4 games to 2.

The Stamps would kick off the scoring just 31 seconds into the 1st as Brad Goethals would take a nice pass across from Josh Tripp & snipe home his 7th of the postseason to make it 1-0. Matt Osadick would make it 2-0 as his long slap-shot would beat a screened Matt Radomsky for his 6th of playoffs to help them to a very good shot. The Pistons would cut their deficit in half as the puck would take a big bounce off the end glass right out in front for Riley Vautour who tapped it in to make it 2-1. Swan would add two more to make it a 3 goal lead with two goals from Tucker Scantlebury to give them a 4-1 advantage after 1 period.

In the 2nd, the Pistons would come out with some jump and would be awarded netting the only goal of the period as Doug Johnson's low point shot would be deflected in by Tanner Mole, for his 5th to make it a 4-2 game after 40 minutes.

The Pistons would get a late goal from Kyle Bettens with 5:18 to go to make it 4-3 but thats as close as they would get as Dane Hirst would ice the game into the empty with just a second left to push Swan to a two goal win.

Merek Pipes was steady in the Stamps' net making 26 saves on 29 shots in the win while Matt Radomsky turned aside 31 shots in the losing cause.

The Stamps will now face off with the top-ranked Portage Terriers in the MJHL Turnbull Cup Final championship series which will begin this weekend.
