The Yorkton Terriers dropped their SJHL playoff opener on Thursday night losing in convincing fashion, 9-2 to the La Ronge Ice Wolves.
It wasn't the opening period, the Terriers were looking for as the Ice Wolves who made their first appearance in the postseason in 3 years would get 5 goals in the 1st. Jared Blacquiere would get his 1st of the postseason on a nice feed from Cole Porter to make it 1-0. Brenden Barron would make it 2-0 just a short time later jamming it through Jakob Severson for opener of the playoffs. Just 2:40 later, Craig Pejkovic would snap home his 1st, to make it an early 3-0 lead just 6:02 into the game. The Ice Wolves weren't done there though as Joel Blacquiere would get 2 to end off the period to give La Ronge a 5-0 lead over Yorkton after 1 period. Shots 20-17 La Ronge.
In the 2nd, the Ice Wolves would get 2 more and they would both come with the man advantage as Cole Porter and Barron would add the markers in the middle frame to give the home team a 7-0 lead after 2 periods.
Jared Blacquiere would add his 2nd of the night early in the 3rd to make it 8-0 before the Terriers add 2 straight off the sticks of McKenzie Welke and Keenan Lugt (1st SJHL goal) to cut Yorkton to within 6, at 8-2. But then the Ice Wolves add another late as Porter would add his second of the night to help them get the early series edge, a 9-2 Game 1 win.
SJHL MVP Kris Joyce made 48 saves on 50 shots to grab the win for the Ice Wolves who then led way to Dakota Kenyon who stopped all 8 shots he faced. The Terriers also used 2 goalies as Jakob Severson made 32 saves on 40 shots while 15 year Jordan Schumland would make his SJHL debut and stopped 6 of 7 shots he faced in relief.
These two teams will go right back at it for Game 2 on Friday from the Mel Hegland Uniplex. Pregame show 7:20, pxp at 7:30 with Yorkton Dodge Junior Hockey on GX94.
