Stampeders' one victory away from the MJHL Semi-Finals after Game 3 victory over Dauphin

The Swan Valley Stampeders earned their 3rd consecutive victory on Wednesday night, defeating the Dauphin Kings 5-3 at the Centennial Arena to take a 3-0 series their MJHL Quarter-Final matchup.

The Stamps like they did in Game 2 would strike first in Game 3 as it would be Brian Harris picking up his 1st of the playoffs just 66 seconds in the 1st to make it a 1-0 lead. They would make it 2-0, 1:45 later as Brad Goethals would beat Bryan Landsberger for his 2nd of the postseason to give the home team a two goal lead very early on.  Dauphin would respond just a short-time later on a 5 on 3 PP as Riley Shamray would one-time home one past Merek Pipes to make it 2-1.  The two teams would then exchange PP goals, 2:37 apart on markers from Campbell Balk (SV) and Cole DeKonick (DAU) that put the score at 3-2 Stampeders after 20 minutes. Shots were 22-9 Swan Valley.

MJHL MVP Josh Tripp would help Swan regain their two goal lead as Josh Tripp would take nifty feed in front from Quintin Sudom and he would use good patience to tuck in his 3rd of the series to make it 4-2 just 3:40 into the 2nd. The Kings would once again cut their deficit in half when Matt Boonstra was driving to the Stamps net and the refs would talk about it and would call it a goal as the game sat at 4-3. But before the middle frame would conclude, the Stamps would once again make it a two goal hockey game at 5-3 after a highlight reel goal from Maine Black Bear commit Matt Osadick (pictured above) as he tucked in the back of the net with a nice back-hand by the Kings net minder.

Merek Pipes earned his 3rd straight win between the pipes making 23 saves while Kings' netminder Bryan Landsberger in his 1st career playoff start turned aside 41 shots in the loss.

The Stamps will go for the 4 game sweep on their series on Friday night when the two teams meet in Game 4 of their series from Credit Union Place in Dauphin. GX94 will broadcast the game with Yorkton Dodge Junior Hockey, pregame show begins at 7:20 with PXP kicking off at 7:30PM MB time.

Elsewhere on Wednesday,

The Waywayseecappo Wolverines dropped their 3rd straight in the postseason losing 8-5 to the Portage Terriers.

Scott Mickoski (2G 1A), Chase Brake (3A) and Sam Huston (1G 2A) led the Terriers with 3 points each.

Jake Bestul (2), Greg Lee, Brandon Lawson, and Nick Doyle replied for the Wolverines who will look to keep their season alive when they host Game 4 of their MJHL Quarter-Final on Friday night at the Wayway Arena Complex. Puck drop will be at 7:30PM MB time from the Wayway Arena Complex.

Yorkton's Johnson captures first collegiate Golf win

                

Yorkton’s Kade Johnson has his first college golf victory.

The reigning Saskatchewan men’s amateur champion overtook fellow Saskatchewanian and Southern Arkansas University teammate Roman Timmerman on Tuesday to win the 36-hole event by four shots over Zach James of SE Oklahoma State. Johnson said the win has been a long time coming.

“It feels amazing, it’s something I’ve been working towards for a long time,” he told Golf Saskatchewan. “I’ve been close a few times and learning over the past couple years what it takes to win at this next level. To finally get it done against a really good field feels awesome.”

Timmerman was leading after round one with a one-under, 71, but Johnson battled back from third place with a final round minus-two, 70, for the win. Johnson said his familiarity with the course helped him get over the hump and collect his first win.

“I’ve played there a bunch, I’ve played home tournaments at Deer Park (in Yorkton) and I’ve learned a lot from playing home courses. Just go out there and play like it’s any other day and if I play well, I play well. I felt comfortable, it’s a tough course but I knew if I made a couple bad numbers I could turn it around but I got off to a great start. I made a few birdies early on, kept the momentum going and made a birdie on my third last hole and calmly closed it out. It was very exciting,” Johnson said.
The tournament was also the second straight team victory for Southern Arkansas.

The Muleriders on the strength of Johnson’s and Timmerman’s top-three finishes held off Henderson State by three strokes. Johnson said as a team they are improving and climbing the national rankings.

“We went to Georgia two weeks ago and won, we were like, let’s go. Our home tournament, we had extra pressure to win and to go out and get it done, it was awesome. Moving from 110^th in the country, last rankings we were 29^th. Rankings come out Tuesday night so a chance to break into the top 20 is incredible,” he said.

The team will head to Oklahoma for an event Sunday. They return to Arkansas for another home state event following that. The conference championship is scheduled within the next month.

Terriers' win Game 3 over Notre Dame to advance to SJHL's Quarter-Finals

The Yorkton Terriers have punched their ticket into the SJHL's Final Eight after a 5-4 victory over the Notre Dame Hounds on Tuesday night to capture the SJHL Wild-Card series, 2 games to 1.

After the Hounds opened the scoring with the only goal in the 1st period, a PP marker from Jarrett Penner, the Terriers would respond in the 2nd in a big way.

Just 59 seconds in, Cody Bruchkowski would tap in his 1st of the playoffs to make it 1-1. Then would add a couple more markers just 2:30 apart a short time later as Colby Brandt and Chantz Petruic (pictured above) would hit the back of the net to push the home-teams lead to 3-1. The Hounds would cut their deficit in half just under 3 minutes later when Kyle Robinson's long point shot would beat a screened Ryan Ouellette for his 2nd of the post season to make it 3-2. But once again the Terriers would complete their strong middle frame with Brandt sniping home his 2nd of the period on a nice feed in front from linemate Chantz Petruic to help the Terriers take a 4-2 lead into the 2nd intermission.

In the 3rd the Terriers will grab their first three goal lead of the night as Branden Klatt would re-direct a long point from Tyson Janzen for his 3rd of the playoffs to make it a 5-2 game. The Hounds wouldn't go down with a little bit of a fight as goals by 20 year old's Marshall Wilton and Charles Martin would pull the visitors within one but thats as close as they would get.

Ryan Ouellette was once again solid in the Terrier goal making 43 saves on 47 shots to grab his 2nd playoff win.

The Terriers now advance on to the SJHL Quarter-Finals where they'll take on the Nipawin Hawks which will likely begin on Friday night in Nipawin for Game 1.

Swan River played host to U18 Curling Championships this past weekend

The Swan River Curling Club hosted the Asham U18 Provincial Championship on March 7-10, 2019. 

The event featured 12 Junior Men’s and 12 Junior Women’s teams from across the province of Manitoba. 

The Champion for the Junior Women is Team Jensen representing the Dauphin Curling Club - Skip - Emma Jensen, Third - Jaycee Terrick, Second - Kaitlyn Szewczyk, Lead - Gracey Gulak    Coach, Alan Jensen.

The Finalist is Team Walter from the Elmwood Curling Club, Skip- Meghan Walter, Third - Emily Zacharias, Second - Becky Friesen, Lead - Mackenzie Elias.

Junior Men's Champion - Team McDonald from the St. Vital Curling Club.  Skip - Jordon McDonald, Third - Jaedon Neuert, Second - Braxton Kuntz, Lead - Alexandre Fontaine, Coach - John Neuert.

Junior Men's Finalist - Team Loewen from the St. Vital Curling Club.  Skip - Graham Loewen, Third - Sean Flatt, Second - Zack Bilawka, Lead - Adam Flatt, Coach Tom Clasper.

Team Jensen and Team McDonald will go on to represent Manitoba at a National U18 event April 2-7, 2019 in Sherwood Park, AB.

Stamps win Game 2; Terriers fall in 2nd game in Sunday's Local MJHL/SJHL Playoff Recap

Kasyn Kruse (pictured above) scored twice while also adding an assist for a 3 point night to lead the Swan Valley Stampeders to a 5-1 win over the Dauphin Kings to take a 2-0 series lead in their Best of 7 MJHL Quarter-Final.

Troy Quinn, Bradly Goethals and Josh Tripp also scored for Swan while Merek Pipes made 36 saves on 37 shots to earn his 2nd straight win in goal.

Riley Buller scored the only goal for the Kings who got 38 saves in the loss from Ethan Slobodzian.

The Stamps and Kings will now meet in Game 3 of their series on Wednesday night. GX94 will broadcast the game with Yorkton Dodge Junior Hockey, pregame show is at 7:20 with the PXP happening starting at 7:30PM MB time.

In SJHL Playoffs, 

The Yorkton Terriers had chance to sweep their Best of 3 SJHL Wild-Card series, but on Sunday in Wilcox they came up a little bit short as they fell 5-1 to the Notre Dame Hounds.

Jakob Breault got things started just 6:06 into the 1st with his 1st of the playoffs to make it 1-0 before Branden Klatt would respond for the Terriers just 2:11 into the middle frame with his 2nd of the series to make it 1-1 early in the 2nd. The Hounds would respond though with a couple goals just 1:13 apart from Marshall Wilton and Zach Kosteniuk later in that period to help the Hounda take a two goal lead at 3-1 into the 2nd intermission.

After a scoreless first two-thirds of the 3rd, the Hounds would respond with 2 quick goals late in the final few minutes off the sticks of Kosteniuk and Jarett Penner to help the home-side stave off elinination.

Riley Kohonick in the Hounds net made 24 saves on 25 shots to earn his 1st SJHL playoff victory while Ryan Ouellette was once again solid despite giving up 5 goals, making 35 saves in the loss.

The two teams will now battle it out for the final position in the SJHL Quarter-Finals on Tuesday night for Game number 3 from the Farrell Agencies Arena. GX94 will broadcast the game with Yorkton Dodge Junior Hockey, pregame show will go at 7:20 while the PXP kicks off at 7:30.

The Flin Flon Bombers swept their Best of 3 series after 6-2 win over the Weyburn Red Wings.

The Bombers now advance to take on the Battlefords North Stars in the SJHL Quarter-Finals.

Stampeders; Terriers strike first in their respective series on Friday

The Swan Valley Stampeders used a big 2nd period to strike first in the MJHL Quarter-Finals, defeating the Dauphin Kings 6-3 at the Centennial Arena.

The visitors would strike first just 4:11 into the 1st on the powerplay as Brendan Arnold would bang it home to make it 1-0. Then 9 minutes later, Grady Hobbs would sneak it through the Merek Pipes to give Dauphin a 2-0 advantage after 20 minutes. Shots were 17-11 Kings through 1 period.

The Stamps's offence would wake up in the 2nd as it would begin with MJHL MVP Josh Tripp who make a nice move around the Kings' D then from back-side back hand home his 1st of the playoffs to cut the deficit to 2-1. Then just 6 seconds later, Alex Uryga would split the defence and his snap-shot would beat Ethan Slobodzian to tie it up at 2-2. Tucker Scantlebury would deflect home a Quintin Sudom point shot past the Kings' net minder to give Swan their first lead at 3-2 lead just 11 seconds.  Swan Valley would add two more from Kasyn Kruse and Tanner Glasrud (1st as a Stamp) to make it 5-2 for the home team after 40 minutes.

In the 3rd the Stamps would add to their lead at the 15:04 mark as Tucker Scantlebury would snipe in his 2nd of the night to make it 6-2 but just 22 seconds later, Cole DeKonick would respond with his 1st to wrap up the scoring.

Stamps' netminder Merek Pipes made 32 saves on 35 shots in goal to earn his 1st MJHL Playoff victory.

The Stamps now lead the Best of 7 MJHL Quarter-Finals, 1-0 with Game number 2 set for this Sunday at 7:30 in Dauphin.
