Melville's Heshka receives high praise overseas




It was a memorable season for Melville product Shaun Heshka this year overseas in Finland.

To go along with winning the Kanada Bowl which is the Finish Elite League Championship with Porin Ässät, Heshka also captured the  Pekka Rautakallio trophy for the best defenseman in the league, beating out OttawA Senators dman  Erik Karlsson, the NHL’s top defense player in 2012 who started out in Finland when the NHL was locked out.

The 27 year old Heshka, who played all of his minor hockey in Melville before playing Midget AAA with the Tisdale Trojans. Heshka would suit up one year for his hometown Melville Millionaires but would then spend 3 full seasons with the WHL's Everett Silvertips.

His pro career would begin with the Manitoba Moose of the AHL, before making stops as a Phoenix Coyote, Peroia Rivermen, Binghamton Senators and in Austria.

Heshka who spent one year in Finland, will suit up in the Kontinental Hockey League in Russia for the 2013/14 Season.
