Terriers keep RBC Cup Hopes alive with win over Nanaimo

The Yorkton Terriers kept their RBC Cup hopes alive with a big 5-3 victory over the host Nanaimo Clippers.

The first period was the worst start you could of imagined for the Terriers as the Clippers would get on the board just over 3 minutes in when Chris Rygus long shot would get past Dawson MacAuley for his 1st of the tournament to make it a 1-0 Clipper lead. Then just 11 seconds later the hosts would make it a 2 goal lead when Greg Fraser would put it top shelf on MacAuley for his 3rd of the tournament to make 2-0 Clippers early. But before the end of the first frame the Terriers would cut the Clips' lead to within 1 when Tyler Giebel would jam it past Jayson Argue for his 2nd goal the tournament to make it 2-1 Nanaimo after 1 period of play.

The Terriers would start off the 2nd period on the right foot as they evened it up at 2 as Devon McMullen would tip a shot from Patrick Martens past Argue for his 2nd of the tournament on the Powerplay which has been a struggle for the Terriers all tournament. Then shortly after the Terriers would get their first lead of the game when Dakota Odgers would slip it five-hole on Argue for his 1st to make it 3-2 Terriers. But this time it would be the Clippers getting a late goal when Josh Bryan's long wrister would get past MacAuley for his 2nd of the tournament to make it a 3-3 tie after 40 minutes of play.

The play would go back and forth to start period 3 until 5:30 left in the third when Kailum Gervais, returning to the lineup after a 2 game absence would pick up the loose puck and put it by Argue for his 1st to give the Terriers a 1 goal lead. The for good measure Jeremey Johnson would get his 4th of the tournament for the insurance marker to give the Terriers a 2 goal lead and they held on for the 5-3 win.

Dawson MacAuley stopped 32 shots for his 3rd win of the tournament while Swan River, Manitoba native Jayson Argue stopped 37 of 42 shots but was tagged with the loss.

The Terriers will now wait the loser of the Brooks/Surrey game tonight for their opponent in the RBC Cup play in game tomorrow afternoon 4:50/5:00 sask time on GX94 with the winner of that game will earn the 2nd berth into the RBC Cup in Summerside, PEI.
