Spilchal nets SO Winner as Wayway dumps Dauphin 3-2; Mils win 1st place showdown

(George Spilchal)

The Wayway Wolverines were credited for their strong effort with a 3-2 shootout victory over the Dauphin Kings.

After a scoreless opening period, the Dauphin Kings would open the scoring 6:26 into the middle frame as Kirklan Lycar would finish off a nice tic tac toe passing play to hammer home his 10th to make it 1-0 Kings. But that lead would be short lived as just 5:19 later Dylan Gedjos would bang home his 9th through goalie Troy Martynuk to tie things up at 1-1. Before the 2nd buzzer could go off Quinton Cubbon would give the Wolverines their first lead at 2-1 after 40 minutes.

After a back and forth start to the 3rd period, the offence would return just half way in as Lycar would one time his 2nd of the night and 11th of the campaign to tie things up and force the Overtime period which would solve nothing.

In the shootout Brock Paddock (Way) and Mathieu Lapointe (Dau) would score for their respective sides in the first 3 shooters forcing the extra shots. In those extra shots, George Spilchal would be the only that would score to the give the Wayway Wolverines a 3-2 shootout win.

20 year old Mitch Wiebe made 23 saves in the victory while Troy Martynuk stopped 38 shots in the shootout cause.

The Wolverines will return to the ice on Tuesday when they visit the Virden Oil Capitals.
