It was quite the week for Yorkton's Kade Johnson (pictured above).
The 19 year old member of Deer Park Golf Course fired his 2nd straight round of 6 under 66 on Thursday to finish at -9, a two shot victory over Humboldt's Mike Herperger to help him capture his 1st Saskatchewan Men's Amateur Golf Championship at the Dakota Dunes Golf Links.
"It feels amazing, you know I've put a lot of work into it over the years, and it's a dream come true, so it's a pretty good feeling", Johnson said in a phone interview on Friday.
Meanwhile Herperger’s score helped him over Saskatoon's David Stewart to win the Mid-Amateur championship (over 25 year old event)
Melville's Mitchell Matichuk capped off his championship with 3 over par 75 and score of +3. He finished in a tie for 12th in the Amateur event but a tie for 6th in Mid-Amateur competition which was enough to help him earn a berth into the Canadian Mid-Amateur in Victoria next month.
Johnson, Herperger, and Stewart plus Ty Campbell who won in a playoff to secure a spot on Team Saskatchewan will play at the Canadian Men's Amateur Championship in Duncan, BC early in August.
Other local products in the event were Kipling's Carson Harcourt who shot a final round of 4 over 76, to finish in a tie of 29th at +9 while Stephen Oleskiw of Yorkton finished off his event with a 17 over par 89 to finish in a tie for 89th.
Chat with Johnson about the title.
