Wolverines dropped MJHL Showcase opener, 4-3 in OT to Selkirk

The Wayway Wolverines got a point but they dropped their 3rd straight game to start the season losing 4-3 to the Selkirk Steelers on Thursday to open up the 2015 Old Dutch MJHL Showcase at the MTS Ice Plex in Winnipeg.

It was a good start & good opening period for the Wolverines as they opened the scoring 8:05 in as Captain Alex Keena sniped home his 3rd of the season to make it 1-0 Wayway. The Steelers would respond with a PP goal of their own by Taylor Fisher his 1st of the season to tie things up at 1-1. The Wolverines added a couple in the late stages of the 1st off the sticks of Rhett Lough & Ty Enns to give Wayway a 3-1 after 20 mins.

In the 2nd the Wolverines would continue their strong play into the middle frame but just weren't able to convert especially on a full time 5 on 3 PP but they just couldn't beat goaltender Cody Murray. The Steelers would build off that momentum and cut it within 1 as Adam Wowryk would deflect home his 2nd of the year to make it 3-2. Then just 1:22 later, they would even things as Victor Knaub would capitalize on a Wolverine turnover and snipe home his 1st MJHL goal to tie things up at 3-3 after 2 periods.

After a scoreless 3rd period, it would be 20 year old Ty Kraus getting the OT winner just 1:14 into the extra frame as he would slip around the Wolverine defenders then wrap around and beat Greg Harney to give his team their first win of the season 4-3 over Wayway.

Newly acquired Cody Murray made 28 saves for the win for the Steelers while Greg Harney dropped to 0-1-1 with a 21 saves performance in a losing cause.

The Wolverines continue their MJHL Showcase on Friday when they battle the Steinbach Pistons at 6PM MB time.
