Zubko Joins Byczynski Brothers In Louisiana

The Byczynski brothers aren't the only familiar faces suiting up for the Louisiana Ice Gators of the Southern Professional Hockey League this season.

Kirk and Clark will also be joined by former Terrier captain Cody Zubko.

Zubko, 23, Kirk, 24, and Clark, 22, all spent significant time as Terriers, but all three were never teammates at the same time, aside from when Clark AP'd for a handful of games as a 17-year-old back in 2007-2008.

Kirk played three full seasons in Yorkton (2006-2009), a total of 151 regular season games, and finished his junior career on the Terriers' top defense pairing, alongside Greg Coburn in 2008-2009.

His younger brother Clark, played in 104 regular season games over two season (2008-2010), before being acquired by the MJHL's Swan Valley Stampeders in a future considerations deal that saw Troy Smukowich come to Yorkton. In Swan, Clark was named MJHL Defenseman Of The Year in 2010-2011.

Zubko would be one of the all-time leaders in games played with the Terriers, suiting up for 192 regular season games over four full seasons (2006-2010). He captained the Terriers in his fourth and final season, to an unexpected Sherwood Conference Championship and league final appearance in 2009-2010, and led the team 28 points in 21 post season games.

Zubko (Preeceville/Stenen, SK) played part of one season with the Fayetteville FireAnts, also of the SPHL, and a season and a half with the U of R Cougars in the CIS prior to this season. Kirk played senior for his hometown Bredenbury Cougars between his junior career ending and now, while Clark, the youngest of the three, is the savvy vet for the Ice Gators, having suited up for them a year ago, and put up an impressive 15 points (1g-14a) in his rookie campaign.

When asked what it'll be like to have his big brother as his "rookie," Clark responded saying "What goes around... comes around!"

The Ice Gators are off to a great start to the 2012-2013 season. They beat the Huntsville Havoc 4-1 and 4-3 on opening weekend, October 26th and 27th, to get a 2-0 record out of the gates. Clark already has a goal and a +1 rating, Kirk has an assist, and is +3, while Cody got into a scrap and is +1.

The Gators play almost all their games on weekends, and hit the road for the first time this season on Friday and Saturday (Nov 2/3), to Mississippi and Pensacola.
