Terriers lose heartbreaker in overtime to Spruce Grove to drop to 1-2

The Yorkton Terriers fell to 1-2 at the Western Canada Cup after falling 3-2 in overtime to the AJHL champion Spruce Grove Saints

The Terriers top scorer in the regular season and playoffs, Brett Boehm carried off from Sundays win over the Dauphin Kings opening the scoring with a hard slap shot past goaltender Kenny Cameron for his 4th of the WCC to give the Terriers an early 1-0 lead. The Saints wouldn't back down as they would get in on the party at the 17:09 mark of the 1st frame as right off the draw Parker Mackay would let a snap shot go that would beat goalie Kale Thomson blocker side for his 2nd of the tournament to tie things up at 1-1 through 20 minutes of play.

Tyler Giebel would regain that 1 goal lead for the Terriers just 3:02 into the middle frame as he would deflect home a Devon McMullen shot from the point for his 1st of the tourney to make it 2-1 Yorkton. The Saints would come back with a marker and once again it would be a powerplay goal as Cameron Hughes would get Spruce Grove back even with his 1st as his wrister would get by Terriers netminder Kale Thomson to put it back to square one, a 2-2 tie after 2 periods.

The Terriers and Saints would play a very even and tight third period, but both teams were not able to break through and get that go ahead goal.

In the overtime, it was the Spruce Grove Saints Saints once again getting a powerplay as Brett Boehm would go to the penalty box, and on that ensuing powerplay the Saints would convert as Carson Samoridny would one time one past Kale Thomson to give the AJHL champs their first win of the WCC, a 3-2 decision in overtime over the Yorkton Terriers.

Kenny Cameron stopped 35 Terrier shots for the win while Kale Thomson made 39 saves in a losing cause.

The two teams both have 1-2 records now, and the Terriers will wrap up their round robin tomorrow night (Wed) when they take on the Coquitlam Express, 5:45/6:00 Sk time on GX94, while Spruce Grove Saints will finish of their round robin on Thursday battling the Winnipeg Blues
