Mils; Terriers both drop season openers on SJHL Opening Night

The Melville Millionaires dropped their season opener on Friday night, 5-0 to the visiting Estevan Bruins at the Horizon Credit Union Center.

After a scrambly start to the 1st period for both sides which was expected for the opening game of any season but it would be the Bruins who would be able to break through at 16:39 mark of the opening period as Issac Embree would bang home a loose puck through Brandon Wells for his 1st SJHL marker to give the visitors a 1-0 lead after 1 period with shot favouring the Bruins at 12-6.

The Mils were looking for a quick start in the 2nd, but they wouldn't get it as it would be the Bruins adding to their lead as Kaelen Holt's shot would go over the left shoulder of Wells for his 1st of the season to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead. The Bruins' wouldn't be done there in the middle frame as they would add to their lead as 20 year old Lynden Pastachak would hammer home his 1st of the SJHL campaign to give the visitors a 3 goal lead. The Mils would play much better in the later stages of the middle frame and had some pretty good chances on their only powerplay of the 2nd but Nathan Alalouf would shut the door to keep it a 3 goal game after 40 minutes with the shots at 26-19 Bruins.

The Mils weren't able to muster up much offence in the 3rd to try and cut into their 3 goal deficit as the Bruins would add a couple more late markers off the sticks of Pastachak and Zach Goberis to give the visitors a 5-0 win over Melville.

Nathan Alalouf stopped 25 shots for the shutout in the Bruins' goal while Brandon Wells made 29 saves in the losing cause.

The two teams will play the back end of the home and home series on Saturday at 7:30 from Affinity Place.

The Yorkton Terriers drop their home opener 2-1 in overtime to the visiting Weyburn Red Wings at the Farrell Agencies Arena.

The Terriers had a 1-0 lead for most of the hockey game on a goal by Kaleb Bell but then Carson Rose would tie it with 3 seconds left and then Jacob Wozney would get the OT winner to lead the visitors to the win.

The two teams will play the rematch of their opening weekend home and home on Saturday at 7:30 from Crescent Point Place.
