Terriers get 1st W of 16/17 with 5-1 thrashing of the Battlefords

The Yorkton Terriers got their first win of the 2016/17 SJHL season as they hammered the previously undefeated Battlefords North Stars 5-1 on Tuesday night from the FAA.

The Terriers didn't take long to get the advantage as just 1:03 in, 20 year old Brandon Sookro would bang home his 1st of the young season to give the Terriers an early 1-0 lead. The North Stars would respond just over 9 minutes later as just as their 5 on 3 PP expired, Reed Delainey's hard one-timer would get past Greg Maggio to make it a 1-1 game and thats how it would end after 1 period. Shots 17-3 North Stars.

In the 2nd, the Terriers would once again strike first as a nifty deflection by Dexter Robinson would slip by past Ryan Rewerts at the half way point of the period to give the home team a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes. Stars were leading the shot column 30-21.

The Terriers would add 3 more in the 3rd as first off, Cole Keenleyside's nice short side shot would beat Rewerts for his 1st of the season to give the Terriers their first 2 goal lead of the night. Shortly after Bonnington BC's Brandon Sookro and Yorkton's Carson Welke would add their 2nd of the season for some insurance to give the home team their first win of the season a 5-1 win over the Battlefords North Stars

Greg Maggio was spectacular in the Terrier goal stopping  40 shots while North Stars' goaltender Ryan Rewerts made 21 saves in the losing cause.

The win was also the first SJHL regular season win for newly named Head Coach/GM Casey O'Brien

The Terriers next action will be on Wednesday night as they visit the Humboldt Broncos at the Elgar Petersen Arena. Pregame show starts at 7:20, pxp at 7:30 with Yorkton Dodge Junior Hockey on GX94.
