Millionaires win; Cardinals lose on WMBL Opening Day



The Melville Millionaires started their 2017 WMBL season on a high-note.

3rd year Millionaire veteran Vinny Martin (pictured above) with his 2nd hit of the night, blooped a walk-off single in the bottom of 9th inning as the Mils came back to beat the visiting Weyburn Beavers 3-2 at Pirie Field. 

Taylor Nychyk also had 2 hits to lead the way offensively for the Mils.

Beach City, Texas's Mason Furlong got the start for the blue and white and went 6 strong innings allowing 1 earned run on 4 hits while striking out 6 but got the no decision.

Eric Sandoz pitched a scoreless 9th and got the win in relief.

The Mils will look for back to back victories as they go right back at it on Friday night hosting the Regina Red Sox at Pirie Field. First pitch will be at 7:05.


Meanwhile in Yorkton,

The Regina Red Sox scored 2 runs in the 1st and 4 more in the 4th inning en route to a 7-1 win over the Yorkton Cardinals at Jubilee Park.

Canora product and reigning Pitcher of the Year Kody Rock took the loss for Yorkton giving up five hits and six runs over 3.2 innings of work.

The Cards will gun for their first win of the season on Saturday night when they host the Weyburn Beavers at Jubliee Park.


Other results at Lethbridge double up Brooks 18-9 and the newly-named Swift Current 57's slipped by the Moose Jaw Miller Express 3-2.
