Mils win their 2nd of the season in Tuesday's WMBL Roundup

Weyburn 1 at Melville 9

 

In a rare weekday afternoon game in the WMBL, the Melville Millionaires defeated the visiting Weyburn Beavers 9-1. The game feature a large contingent of local school kids spending an enjoyable day at the ball park. 

 

Melville starter Mason Furlong pitched five strong innings, giving up just three hits while fanning seven Beaver batters. The Millionaire bullpen was fantastic as the combination of James Batton, Thomas Halcomb and Tanner Luna shut the door producing four shutout innings.  

 

The loss went to Carson Perkins who lasted just three innings after allowing four hits, four walks and four runs.  

 

Carlos Flores, a product of the University of Rio Grande, was the lone bright spot in the Weyburn lineup producing two hits and a run.

 

First baseman Marshall McPherson from Texarcana, Texas, let Melville with three hits including two homers, three runs and four RBI. 

 

With the win Melville is now 2-3, Weyburn dropped to 3-2.

 

 

 

Brooks 2 at Medicine Hat 12

 

The Medicine Hat Mavericks scored eight runs in the second inning and never looked back as they routed the Brooks Bombers 12-2. Medicine Hat had 13 hits while Brooks countered with eight hits. The difference was the Bombers were charged with six fielding errors. 

 

Centre fielder Zack Kunkel was one of eight Mavericks who had a hit in the game. Kunkel had three hits and scored two runs. 

 

Ashton Roy was Brooks top hitter going three for four with a double a RBI, a walk and a stolen base. 

 

Conner Deeds tossed six innings for the victory.  Cameron Kremers, who lasted two innings, took the loss.

 

The win was the first of the season for Medicine Hat. 

 

 

 

Moose Jaw 5 at Regina 8

 

It was a team effort as the Regina Red Sox used six different pitchers in their 8-5 victory over the Moose jaw Miller Express.  Newcomer Kevin Borst, a Taft University product, made his WMBL debut memorable by picking up the save and striking out five of the six batters he faced.

 

Galen Andrews started for the Miller Express and lasted two innings. Andrews left the game after being charged with four runs on four hits. 

 

Travis Able, from Leawood, Kansas had four hits and scored two runs in Moose jaw’s  losing effort. 

 

Justin Erlandson continued to dominate WMBL pitching recording four hits, three runs and three RBI.   

 

508 fans were on hand at Currie Field to watch Regina improve their record to 4-2. The loss dropped Moose Jaw to 1-3. 

 

 

 

Edmonton 5 at Fort McMurray 1

 

Over 1,500 fans filled Shell Stadium in Fort McMurray to watch the Giants host the Edmonton Prospects. Edmonton ran their record to 2-1 with a 5-1 over the winless Giants. 

 

Jake Lanferman led Edmonton’s 10 hit offensive charge contributing three hits including a double and two RBI.  

 

Edmonton’s Jordan Parranto picked up the win while John Reid was saddled with the loss for Fort McMurray.
