Swan River's Tripp announced as MJHL's Player of the Year

Josh Tripp of the Swan Valley Stampeders is this year’s MJHL’s selection for the Canadian Junior Hockey League Player of the Year award.

Tripp, who turns 21 later this month, was recently voted the MJHL’s Most Outstanding Player, in addition to being named a first-team all-star. He also won the Mike Ridley Trophy which is awarded to the player who wins the MJHL scoring race.

Each of the 10 leagues in the CJHL nominate a league winner which are reviewed by a selection committee to pick the national winner as the CJHL Player of the Year. The award winner will be announced at National Junior A Championship tournament next month in Brooks, AB.

“I’m extremely honoured to have been nominated and represent the MJHL,” said Tripp, who hails from Swan River. “Playing for my hometown team has been a dream come true. I grew up watching the Stampeders and it’s been a great experience playing this season in front of my family and friends.”

Tripp hopes to attend a post-secondary school and earn a degree in business. He’s also hoping to continue his hockey career via the university or college route.

“Josh is an outstanding nominee based on both his on-ice and off-ice contributions,” MJHL Commissioner Kim Davis said. “He’s worked with youth in his hometown, helping at various practices and learn to skate programs. He’s also been in the schools reading to students. He’s an outstanding person, student and hockey player.”

Manitoba’s last national winner was Portage Terriers’ star Eric DeLong, who won the award in 2009.
