Local Weekend Sports Recap


Maier, Korczak & Team Canada win 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup Gold

Sasha Mutala and Alexis Lafreniere each had a pair of goals as Canada defeated Sweden 6-2 in the final of the Hlinka Gretzky Cup on Saturday night.


Kirby Dach and Josh Williams also scored for Canada, which has now won the tournament 10 of the last 11 years, and has earned gold 22 times in the event’s 28-year history.

Yorkton products G Nolan Maier (Saskatoon Blades) & D Kaedan Korczak (Kelowna Rockets) were members of the Canadian team

Melville, Neepawa & Waywayseecappo swing trades

 
The Melville Millionaires, Waywayseecappo Wolverines and Neepawa Natives have come together on a 3 way trade that was announced on Sunday.


The first trade saw
the Wolverines have acquire 19 year old forward Ryan Heino (pictured above right), D prospect Tyson Fincaryk (02) , and a 2019 6th round draft pick from the Neepawa Natives, in exchange for 20-year-old forward and Moosomin product Drayson Skulmoski, and F prospect Kurtis Luke (00).

Fincaryk, a product of Winnipeg had 3 points in 22 games this past year with the Winnipeg Midget AAA Bruins.

Skulmoski had 9 goals, 13 assists for 22 points in 48 games split with Wayway/Virden last season while Luke had 67 points in 44 games with the Parkland Midget AAA Rangers.

Then the 2nd trade saw the Wolverines trade Heino to the SJHL's Melville Millionaires in exchange for 20 year old F Issac Embree (pictured above left)

Heino, who will join older brother Dayton on the Moneymen had 7 goals, 20 assists for 27 points in 51 games with Neepawa last season.

Embree (Ladner BC) joined the Mils in a mid-season trade from the Estevan Bruins and contributed 15 goals, 26 assists for 41 points in 48 games split between the Bruins and Mils.
