The Swan Valley Stampeders earned their 23rd victory of the season on Sunday night as they held on for a 5-4 win over the Portage Terriers at Stride Place.
After a scoreless 1st period, the Stampeders would strike early in the 1st as Josh Tripp would hammer home his 18th of the season to give them a 1-0 lead. Then just 17 seconds later, Matt Osadick would deflect home a Daylin Smallchild point shot by former Stampeder Lasse Petersen for the Grande Pointe, MB's 13th of the season to make it 2-0. The Terriers though a few minutes later would cut their deficit in half as Ty Enns would poke home his 12th of the year making it 2-1. Just 4:14 later, after a nice rush by Shane Roulette he was denied by Petersen but then a rebound came out to Dane Hirst and he made no mistake for his 1st of the campaign to regain Swan's 2 goal lead at 3-1. It would stay like that until just 4 seconds left in the middle frame on the power play as Chase Brakel would let a back-hander go on net that would go off the left shoulder of Brett Evans and lay on the crease and then would poked home by Jeremy Leipsic for his 22nd to make it a 3-2 Swan lead after 40 minutes.
In the 3rd, Leipsic would bring the game even at 3-3 as once again back-door as he would send a rebound over the left pad for his 2nd of the game. After back and forth action for most of the 3rd period, the Stamps would take a a two goal lead late in 3rd. Josh Tripp would beat Lasse Petersen with a beauty of a wrist shot short-side for his 2nd of the game with just 3:56 left and then 1:10 later Noah Basarab would be sent in alone on a breakaway and make no mistake for his 16th of the year to give the visitors a 5-3 lead. Ty Enns would get a late goal in the final minute with the goalie pulled but that's as close as they would get.
Brett Evans earned his 14th victory of the season making 36 saves on 40 shots while Lasse Petersen turned aside 30 shots in the losing cause.
The Stampeders next game will be on Wednesday night when they visit the Yellowhead Center to take on the Neepawa Natives. Puck drop is at 7:30.
Despite Neepawa's 6-3 win on home ice against the OCN Blizzard on Sunday, they still trail the Stampeders by 2 points for that 8th and final playoff spot in the MJHL standings.
