The Waywayseecappo Wolverines got into the win column for the 2nd time this season as they defeated the Virden Oil Capitals 5-4 last night (Tues) at the Wayway Arena Complex.
The Oil Capitals would grab a 1-0 lead 14:16 into the first as Turner Santin would bang home his 1st of the season on the power play for the visitors. Just 4:02 later, the Oil Caps would add to their lead as Carter Cowlthorp's long shot would get through some traffic and past Hunter Lorenson to give the away team a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. Shots 13-9 Virden after 1.
In the 2nd, 2 goals would be scored both by the Wolverines. Cody Durdle would get Wayway on the board as his long point shot would go over the left shoulder of Marc Audet for his 2nd of the year to make it 2-1. Then with 4:45 left in the middle frame Buchanan's Korwin Shewchuk would jump on a loose puck and bang home his 5th of the season to tie it up at 2-2 after 2 periods. Shots in the 2nd were 15-2 Wayway, and a 24-15 edge for the home sqaud after 2.
Tyler Kirkup would regain Virden's 1 goal lead just 3:46 into the 2nd, to make it 3-2 game. But a power play goal by Trevor Kavanaugh, his 1st as a Wolverine to draw them back even at 3-3. The Wolverines would grab their first lead of the night with just 3:24 left as Captain Brandon Stanley would notch his team leading 9th of the season to make it 4-3. It would stay like that until 39 seconds left in regulation as it would be Tyler Kirkup again deflecting home his 2nd of the night to tie it up at 4-4 to force overtime.
After overtime solved nothing, the heroics were left to North Battleford's Quinton Cubbon (pictured above) who sniped home the winner in the 6th round of the shootout to help the Wolverines to their 2nd win of the season a 5-4 decision over Virden.
Hunter Lorenson got the start for Wayway and made 22 saves for his 2nd win of the season while Marc Audet turned aside 35 shots in the shootout loss.
The Wolverines return to the ice on Saturday night for a 2 game roady when they battle the Winnipeg Blues at the MTS Ice Plex.
