The Swan Valley Stampeders drew first blood in their Sherwood division semi final as they went into Virden and shutout the Oil Caps 3-0 to take a 1-0 series lead in the Best of 7 series.
The first half of the 1st period would show that the teams had a little rust from their little break in between games but the Stamps would get things going late in the opening frame when Bo Sigurdson would capitalize on an Oil Caps turnover and go top shelf on Adam Iwan for his 1st of the playoffs to give Swan an early 1-0 lead. The Stamps would make it 2-0 just 1:48 later as Nic Erb would take a feed far side and go over the glove of Iwan for his 1st playoff goal to give the Stamps a 2 goal lead after 20 minutes.
In the 2nd it would be the Oil Caps coming on strong trying to cut into the Swan Valley lead but they couldn't do so as Cole Holowenko who was solid all night long, kept them off the board. Then on a broken play it would be Dylan Favell feeding Max Flanagan who would beat Iwan high glove for his 1st to give them a 3-0 lead after 2 periods.
Virden would once again start off the 3rd with lots of pressure and they would hit about 3 posts in that final frame including 2 in one shift, but they would not be able to get anything past Holowenko and it would end as a 3-0 Stamps Game 1 victory in one of the most complete games they have played all season.
Cole Holowenko (pictured above) stopped 31 shots for his 1st shutout as a Stamp while Adam Iwan turned aside 22 shots in a losing cause.
Stamps will host the Oil Caps for Game 2 of the Best of 7 Sherwood Semi-Final series on Monday night at 7:30 from the Centennial Arena. GX94 will broadcast the game with Yorkton Dodge Junior playoff hockey, pregame 7:20, PXP at 7:30. Game 3 goes back in Virden on Thursday.
