Johnson plays hero as Stamps win Game 2 thriller over Virden

The Swan Valley Stampeders came back from 2 goals down early in the 3rd to defeat the Virden Oil Capitals 4-3 in double overtime to take a 2-0 lead in their best of 7 Sherwood Semi-Final series on Monday night in Swan River.

Carter Johnson (pictured above) got things going in th first period as he deflected one home through the five-hole of Adam Iwan for his 1st of the playoffs to give the Stamps a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

The Oil caps would take over in period 2 as Curtis Oliver would finally get one by Cole Holowenko for his 1st to make it a 1-0 lead just before the Oil Caps would get their first lead of the series as Cole Hamblin deflected one past Holowenko to make it 2-1 Oil Caps after 2 periods.

Ben Williams would give Virden a 2 goal lead at 3-0 early on in the third period as he beat the Stamps goalie short side to give them a commanding lead. But the Stamps would start a comeback of their own and it would start with Braydon McDonald deflecting one home, and then Carter Johnson would get the equalizer half way thru the 3rd to make it a 3-3 hockey game.

The first overtime would solve nothing while in the 2nd OT, the Stamps would be rewarded a penalty as Nic Erb was hooked up and a short time into the PP, Carter Johnson  would walk out and go top corner on Iwan for his hat trick goal and a 4-3 double OT win for the Stamps.

Cole Holowenko stopped 33 shots for the win while Adam Iwan turned aside 45 in a losing cause.

Gx94 will broadcast Game 3 of the series on Thursday night from Virden, 7:20/7:30 MB time with Yorkton dodge Junior Hockey.
