The 2019 University Cup (USports Men's Hockey Championships are taking place this Thursday to Sunday at the Enmax Center in Lethbridge, Alberta with some local flavour taking part.
The host Lethbridge Pronghorns will be the host team for the event and the squad features 5th year F and Swan Valley Stampeder alumni Justin Valentino.
"It's obviously a great opportunity to be a part of and it's huge for our University, the athletics program and for our hockey team to participate in a first class event like this", Valentino said in a phone interview with GX94. The Pronghorns will open up their event in the Quarter-Finals tonight (Thurs) against the top-ranked & defending national champion Albert Golden Bears and Valentino knows it'll be a tough test.
"They are the defending champions for a reason, and we had some tough games against this year but we also played them tough at the end of the year taking them to overtime, and in a tournament like this in a single-game elimination anything can happen so we will stick to our structure and see what happens tonight."
Meanwhile the 2nd-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies who feature Hudson Bay's Levi Cable, Grenfell's Donovan Neuls, Moosomin's Dakota Boutin and Yorkton Terrier alum Tanner Lishchynsky, they open up their play this afternoon (Thurs) at 1PM SK time against the Guelph Gryphons
Dakota Odgers (Spy Hill), Moosomin product Rykr Cole and Wayway Wolverines' alumni Troy Martyniuk & the Carleton Ravens will play their Quarter-Final on Friday afternoon at 1PM SK time vs. the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds.
