Terriers' drop Game 1 of SJHL Semi-Final to the North Stars

The Yorkton Terriers started off their SJHL Semi-Final off on the wrong foot after a 6-2 defeat at the hands of the Battlefords North Stars on Friday night.

The Terriers would strike first in Game 1 as with just one second left on their first PP of the night Cole Keenleyside would beat Joel Gryzbowski short-side for his 4th of the playoffs to give the Terriers a 1-0 advantage after 20 minutes. Shots after 1 were 14-9 in favour of the North Stars.

Quin Loon-Stewardson would draw the North Stars even just 4:26 into the 2nd with a PP goal of his own beating Ryan Ouellette five-hole to tie things up at 1-1. They would grab their first lead of the night just 80 seconds later as Dayton Heino would grab his 1st of the playoffs with a nice wrister to give the North Stars the lead. Brayden Buziak would add another just over half-way through the 2nd, his 4th marker of the playoffs to help Battlefords wrap up the 2nd period with a two goal lead at 3-1. The North Stars led the shot clock once again after 40 minutes at 31-19.

The North Stars power play would once again strike early in the 3rd with two PP goals just 28 seconds apart from Eli Loon-Stewardson and Ryan Gil to push the Battlefords lead to 5-1 just over 2 minutes in. The Terriers would make it a three goal game once again though as Kishaun Gervais would pick up a loose puck in the crease and beat the North Stars net minder for his 1st SJHL Playoff goal to make it 5-2 but a late goal from Austin Shumanski in the final minute would help wrap up the scoring to help the home team to a series opening victory.

Joel Gryzbowski turned aside 29 of 31 shots in the North Stars net to earn the victory while Terrier goaltender Ryan Ouellette made 37 saves in the loss.

The two teams will go right back at it in Game 2 on Saturday from North Battleford and GX94 will broadcast the game once again with Yorkton Dodge Junior Hockey, “Sask Milk” pregame begins at 7:20 with the PXP beginning at 7:30 from the Civic Center.
