January 25th Local SJHL/MJHL Recap

In the Long Lake Hockey League (Game you heard on GX94)

The Drake Canucks scored two 3rd period goals including the GWG from veteran Brad Toews to come back to defeat the Foam Lake Flyers 4-3 at the Foam Lake Rec Center.

Matt Spafford, Steven Toporowski and Lee Gusikoski also scored for the Canucks while Chris Durand chipped in with 3 assists in the win.

Carson Kristjanson, Justin Boyer and Dalane Lamb replied for the Flyers.

The Flyers now just sit 1 point up on Drake for 2nd place in the standings heading into the final day of the regular season on Saturday. Foam Lake will visit Davidson tonight at 7PM while the Canucks travel to take on the Wynyard Monarchs at 8PM.

In the SJHL,

Mason Mullaney (1G 2A) and Quin Hobbs (2G 1A) each had 3 points to lead the Yorkton Terriers to their 2nd straight win, a 5-2 victory over the La Ronge Ice Wolves.

Colby Brandt and Cody Bruchkowski also scored for the Terriers while both Ryan Ouellette (14 saves on 15 shots) and Andrew Henderson (12 saves on 13 shots) split goaltending duties for Yorkton.

The Terriers return back to the ice on Tuesday night when they entertain the Kindersley Klippers at 7:30.

In the MJHL,

The Waywayseecappo Wolverines won their 2nd straight game after defeating the Steinbach Pistons 4-2 on Friday night.

Anthony Bilka had a goal and an assist to lead the Wolverines while Preston Seymour, Jack Kennedy and Conrad Phillips chipped in with singles.

Isaac Labelle made 33 saves on 35 shots to earn his 15th win of the season.

The Wolverines' next action will be on Wednesday night when they host the Winnipeg Blues.


Quintin Sudom's 16th goal of the season was the only offence the Swan Valley Stampeders could muster up as they fell on the road, 2-1 to the Winkler Flyers.

Brody Moffat and Eric Fawkes scored for the Flyers while Riley Morgan made 33 saves in the win.

Merek Pipes turned aside 28 of 30 shots in the losing cause.

The two teams will go right back at it tonight (Sat) in Winkler at 7:30.
