Stampeders kick off 2019 with home win over Selkirk in Jan. 5th MJHL/SJHL Recap

MJHL 

The Swan Valley Stampeders kicked off 2019 on the right note defeating the visiting Selkirk Steelers 5-3 at the Centennial Arena.

Brad Goethals led the way for the Stamps with 2G 1A while Tanner McKechnie, Campbell Balk and Tucker Scantlebury in his Swan debut also scored in the win.

Merek Pipes turned aside 29 shots to earn his 9th victory of the season.

Nate Halvorsen, Ryan Sokoloski and Brett Namaka replied for the Steelers.

These two teams will go right back at it on Sunday afternoon at 4PM from the Centennial Arena in Swan River.

Elsewhere in the MJHL,

The Waywayseecappo Wolverines dropped a 6-3 road decision to the first place Portage Terriers.

Nick Doyle had 1G 1A to lead the Wolverines offensively while Riley Vautour and Alex Lucken chipped in with singles.

Issac Labelle made 24 saves on 29 shots in the losing.

Braden Billaney led the Terriers with 2 goals in the victory.

The Terriers/Wolverines will meet in the back end of their home and home series this evening from the Wayway Arena Complex. Puck drop will be at 6PM.

SJHL 

Former Terrier Ben Laidlaw made 45 saves in his return to Yorkton as his Weyburn Red Wings defeated the Yorkton Terriers 4-2 on Saturday night.

Jared Legien and Dino Antoniadis scored for the Terriers in the loss while former Red Wing Riley Lamb turned aside 21 shots in his first game against his former team.

Sean Olson, Tyran Brown, Will Cruise and Drew Anderson replied with the goals for Weyburn.

The Terriers' next game will be on Tuesday night when they visit the Estevan Bruins. Yorkton will go into the game 6 games up on Estevan for top spot in the Viterra division.

Meanwhile in Melville,

The Melville Millionaires got the tying goal late from rookie Luke Spadafora but they went on to fall in the shootout 2-1 to the visiting Flin Flon Bombers.

Chrystopher Collin scored in regulation for the Bombers while Nate Hooper netted the OT winner.

Jacob Delorme made 36 saves on 37 shots to earn the victory while Berk Berkeliev was solid in the Mils making 34 stops in the shootout loss.

The Mils will return to action on Wednesday night when they visit the Melfort Mustangs. GX94 will broadcast the game with Yorkton Dodge Junior Hockey, "Sask Milk" pregame begins at 7:20, pxp starts up at 7:30.
